Top 50 Mariner Moments, 2007: #10

Game thread

----------

Everyone likes a flawed hero embarking on a path to redemption. And there are few heroes more flawed than Jeff Weaver.

I don't really have anything new to add to what I wrote about the game after it happened. This isn't the kind of thing that you can look at from a bunch of angles or analyze for its various story lines. You can't talk about it one day, then talk about it again the next and offer a different viewpoint. This narrative has but a solitary plot thread with a singular interpretation - a beaten pitcher pulling himself up by the bootstraps at a time when nobody believed in him but himself, and even his own confidence was unsteady. It was, in many ways, the ultimate comeback, and were one to watch video of the game with an understanding of the context, that's the only way in which he'd see it.

A lot of people might not agree with my placing Weaver's achievement so high on the list. That's fine; I don't expect everyone to feel the same way as me about everything. But as far as I'm concerned, I can say with absolute certainty that I found precious few events all season long to be as downright rewarding - in every sense of the word - as Jeff Weaver approaching Kenji with a big stupid grin. Rare are the moments that a fan feels happier for one of his players than he does for himself. But as backwards as it may seem, these are the moments that prove the most memorable.

Jeff Weaver may not have been a good pitcher in 2007, but in my book, thanks to this shutout, he'll always be one of the most beloved piles of crap in Mariner history.

Brings back memories
This game broke one of those six-game losing streaks (which Jeff Weaver himself was on as he was 0-6 coming in).

Richie and Vidro were batting 7th and 8th.  I miss Hargrove (when his job is on the line).

To me
this was the top moment of the year after the Felix game(s). I got off of work expecting Weaver to have kicked us in our collective balls, only to hear that he was hurling a shutout. At first I thought Dave had lost his battle with senility, but the more the game went on, the more I was willing accept that this was indeed reality, that perhaps this might be the truth-- but i still wasn't entirely convinced. It was only when the old man phoned me and said, "can you believe this..." that I started to believe that a) our season wasn't over, and b) that Weaver's dominance actually might be really happening.
"You know, as that was coming out of my mouth, I knew that it was wrong."

It was backwards day.
I mean, in what parallel universe does Jeff Weaver throw a 4-hit shutout AND Raul Ibanez go 2-4 with a HR against a lefty???

Correction.
Looking at the box score, Raul hit his HR off a righty.

I didn't like this game
I completely believed that Jeff Weaver's shutout against Pittsburgh was going to be the 2007 equivilent to the shutout that Aaron Sele threw in 2005 that kept him bumbling around in the rotation for a few extra months.

Was I ever wrong.

While Weaver eventually came back down to earth, during the summer months I was finding myself looking forward to his starts almost as much as I was Felix's.

Didn't believe it.
Long time reader, had to finally make an account to comment on this one. I was out of the country when it happened, somehow heard about it, and couldn't believe that it actually happened. I assumed there was some miscommunication between here and where I was. I had to get in contact with some friends back home to confirm it.
If I was making my own personal top moments list, this would be in about the same place on mine.
