Top 50 Mariner Moments, 2007: #26

September 28th: Jeff Clement hits a walk-off homer to drop Mike Wood and the Rangers.

Box score & PBP

Game thread

----------

A lot of the top moments so far have been about their significance in the present. This one was all about the significance for the future.

Yes, it was just one at bat. Yes, it was a meaningless game. And yes, Mike Wood is a bad pitcher. But when Jeff Clement sent that 86mph sinker flying over the center field fence, there wasn't a single Mariners fan watching who didn't get those chills down the spine that you get whenever you feel like you're just seeing the tip of the iceberg. While Clement may not be an A-level prospect, we've been awaiting his arrival for a long time, and he's the best left-handed bat this system's had in eons. So there's a lot of hope resting on his shoulders. And when he went ahead and won this game, all that hope - if only for a minute - turned into something a little more real. Like maybe this one could turn out as exactly what we want, and nothing less. For once, we were allowed to feel like our wishes and dreams were justifiable.

There are few things I want more than to be able to watch Jeff Clement blast homer after homer for the better part of the next decade (as a Mariner. Dammit Bill, don't even try). I want all of our prospects to pan out and succeed in Seattle, but Clement more than most, since I've been following him for a while, and since he could be the left-handed power bat for which we've been searching forever. And I know I'm not alone in feeling this way. So for those of us who can't wait for the day when Clement gets his starting gig, this walk-off bomb against Texas will always be a memorable moment. For one night, Clement put his name in everyone's head. Here's to a long career that makes sure it stays there.

As for the homer itself - as if it weren't already awesome enough, not only was it accompanied by the kind of maniacal laugh from Mike Blowers that we thought got cremated along with the rest of Vincent Price, but Clement was also trailed on the basepaths by one Yuniesky Betancourt, who thought that Clement had just hit a game-winning double. It seems our everyday shortstop is just a little bit retarded.

This may have been my favorite game I went to
this year.  Aside from getting to enjoy the game with Red, we had Clement starting and were playing a team I knew we should beat.  That made my anger a little stronger when we lost the lead and we had to go to the bottom of the ninth.  Red and I flipped out when Beltre got on, and when Mac surprisingly let Clement hit, I was excited.  Once again he showed a great approach, not swinging at anything that's not a strike.

At the crack of the bat, I didn't think it was gone.  I thought it was a double into the gap too.  But it just kept carrying and carrying right over the center field wall.  Which was even more amazing considering it was a cold, humid night in Seattle.  It was then that I decided Clement was my favorite prospect, and that I really felt he was going to be an awesome major leaguer.  If he's hitting, he better be our catcher by July, because his bat is just so much more fun to watch than Kenji's.

Wow, sorry for the rant.

Well yeah, but I don't want people
to feel like I'm bragging about that.  I mean, it was really cool but I feel it's rude and annoying to keep talking about it.

But that clip is on the video loop at Safeco field....

:o

Huh, I don't remember this game at all, so I had
to go and watch the highlights on the M's page. I remember his homer that tied it against Cleveland in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, but not a game winner.

Yep
Jeff Clement was pretty awesome at the end of the season.  Quite amazing considering how few Mariner hitters have hit walk-off homeruns over the past few years (Sexson, Beltre, Carl Everett).

Ah after skimming through the gamethread
now I know why I don't remember this game. I was watching the D-backs win the NL West.

Ha ha
I remember listening to the radio broadcast of that game, and it wasn't until the ball cleared the fence that Neihaus actually got excited.

He seemed to think it was just a regular fly ball, but when the whole place exploded, I guess that was enough of a hint.

In his defense
It really didn't look like it was going to make it over from inside the Stadium.  I thought it may even hit the warning track.  Hitting one out to center in Safeco on a cold humid night is quite the task.  I don't think anyone really though it was gone at first.

I think this was the first time
that I was able to put the epic collapse behind me and start looking forward to next season.

That was an amazing moment.
I hadn't even been following him as closely as you guys, but that was one of the greatest moments for the year for me, if for no other reason than that rush you feel when you see that kind of potential actually succeed.
...and now I'm here

I only made the last 3 games
of the year. This one was by FAR the highlight. I was sitting 1.5 sections to the right of Brett/Red.

I had Seattle T-shirt company print me a 'Free Jeff Clement' shirt about 2 hours before the game. I wore it all game yelling Free Jeff Clement and cheering wildly during his at bats. As you know, the seattle fans around me were confused.
Then he hit the walk off. My whole section pointed and some gave me high 5's. Truly one of my greatest moments as a fan. I am going to ST and I have GOT to get that baby signed. Hopefully, Bill won't ACTUALLY Free him this time, cos the last campaign was misunderstood by our org. ha!

Glad to see it made the list!! Can't wait for the top 25.

I have a cousin with 1 testicle, when they yell play ball, he smiles.

This was one of the few games
I was able to watch on the television, making Clement's walk-off FB that much more awesome.

FSN Video
You can see the original broadcast here.
You can't see Yuniesky that well, but Mike Blowers does laugh about it.
