Top 50 Mariner Moments, 2007: #19

May 5th: With one gone in the top of the eighth, Ben Broussard snaps Chien-Ming Wang's perfect game/no-hitter/shutout with one totally awesome swing of the bat.

Game thread

----------

There's a line of thinking out there that, if someone gets deep enough with a no-hitter or a perfect game, true fans of the sport - even those who root for the team getting stomped - ought to pull for the pitcher for the sake of making (and witnessing) history.

Yeah, no. Not in New York. Not against the Yankees. They've done enough at our expense.

I hope Ben made children cry.

ahhh yes
this was my first M's game. A friend and I took a bus down, we were the only M's fans in the group. All I remember is trying to get Willie's autograph, since he was the first one out on the field (go figure)

"I hope Ben made children cry" -- classic!

that was a classic

Fuck that. Break it up.
Brenly can sit and spin for all I care about his opinions.

#19?
I mean, yeah, it was nice to shove that in the Yankees face, but we still go our ass kicked...to me, this is an "honorable mention" type moment...

Agreed about the unwritten rules...
Remember all the bitching and moaning when Ben Davis broke up Schilling's perfect game with a bunt?

It's not supposed to be easy: it's supposed to be some talent, a magic night, and a ton of luck.  If the opposing team rolls over to give it to you what's the point?  You might as well just go play "physical" basketball at the local elementary school court.

You're so right...
Just like Mike Cameron, going for his 5th HR on the night, getting served meatballs by the White Sox in order to ding it.

I wanted it to happen, he rode it to the warning track, but afterwards I was thinking, "Well that's hardly fair!"

I don't remember that
I remember him getting beaned in his 5th plate appearence and the Chicago faithful booing the crap out of the pitcher for it.  I don't remember any meatballs being thrown and Cammy just missed the last pitch he saw.

Ah well, still a magical fun night for everybody not wearing white and black.

I will not make jokes in my sig. I will not make jokes in my sig. I will not...

Nope
He went oppo and it reached the warning track. All of US Cellular was rooting for him to, they all knew it. There were meatballs, some asian pitcher I believe. Cammy was smiling, he knew what was going on. He popped it up DEEP, just not enough.

Thus ends my photographic memory recall.

Photographic memory or not
How the heck can you know what was going on with the opposing pitcher?

Jeff, you never cease to amaze me with your unbridled excellence. So many of the posters here are fucking Gods. Even that Limey is awesome.

I love you all passionately.
