Erik Bedard Is Really Good

NOTE: I'm obviously operating under the assumption that a trade has been agreed to. If this is somehow all a bunch of bullshit, then whatever, nevermind.

That's going to be the title of every post I make for a little while, to serve as a reminder that, as much as it sucks that we're sending AJ+ (and we still don't know what the + is, and it's making me nervous) to baseball's armpit, at least the guy we're getting back is certifiably amazing. Bedard might be the best starting pitcher in baseball. Barring something unforeseen and disastrous, every single person here is going to fall in love with how incredible he is. Plus, he's Canadian, which I think is funny, even though I don't know why. So that's neat.

Incidentally, from an email discussion about the state of our pitching staff last year:

----------

Date:     Thu, 24 May 2007 13:38:41 -0700 (PDT)
From:    "Jeff Sullivan" <x>
Subject:    Re: Bye-bye, Ho
To:    "David Cameron" <x>

Can we trade Jones for Erik Bedard or something?

----------

This is a weird day for me. I mean, I don't love the trade at all, but I'm not that upset. Last year, when those two deals went down, at the time I found myself shaking and saying a lot of naughty words. There's none of that right now. I actually feel rather serene.

A big part of it is that I've been treating this as an inevitability for weeks. I mean, this trade has been poked and prodded a thousand times over, and at this point I don't think there's anything anyone could say that hasn't already been said by four other people. I've gotten so accustomed to talking and hearing about it that I guess my psychological response has been diluted over a month, instead of coming out as a focused beam of concentrated emotion the way it did last year when I was taken by surprise. Bedard still hasn't officially been traded, and already it's old hat.

But there's something else at play, here. This isn't like the Vidro/Ramirez trades, or the Sexson/Silva signings. With a lot of the players that Bavasi's brought in over the years, there've been performance concerns. I don't have any of those with Erik Bedard. Bedard is an elite-level talent, the best Mariner since Alex Rodriguez. If he's healthy (which, granted, is a legitimate concern, as Bedard's a bit fragile), he's going to be unfair. This is about as much of a certainty as it can be for any pitcher in the league.

And that's a potent salve. Were I to make a list of the pros and cons here, the pros would be considerably less scientific, but that doesn't make them any less real. I am a big fan of Erik Bedard. I do drool at the thought of having two of the top ten talents at the front of our rotation. I will enjoy having a pitcher who doesn't rely on anyone but himself to succeed. I don't think this is the smartest baseball move, but viewed from the perspective that sports are entertainment, this is going to make our team more fun to watch. That's not insignificant. Erik Bedard is a 6'1 tower of awesome that's going to keep us interested in those games against Chicago and Texas that otherwise wouldn't be the least bit compelling, and for that I'm thankful.

There's nothing to do now but watch Bedard highlights, wait for the official word, and hope that we don't end up losing too much on top of AJ. As long as we're hanging on to Clement and Triunfel, I can't imagine that the final package is going to make me feel any worse. For me, this has always been about Jones. No one else matters nearly as much.

And so we make our move in the slide puzzle that this offseason has become. One hole is filled at the expense of another. I don't like any of the options for RF, but we've known this to be an issue for as long as we've been discussing the trade, so there's no sense in belaboring the point. We'll just have to settle for Wilkerson or Wlad or someone and hope that he's able to keep himself afloat for however long the team's in contention. With luck, that'll be about seven months.

Brilliant baseball decision? I don't think so. But it's invigorating and not dull, and since there's nothing any of us can do about it, we might as well embrace the outcome. Welcome to Seattle, Erik Bedard. Don't mind the disappointment; it's nothing personal. Everybody thinks you're awesome, and here's hoping you can pitch us into October. If anyone can do it, it's you.

Fuck the Angels.

"Bedard is an elite-level talent, the best Mariner since Alex Rodriguez"

We've got this guy named Ichiro that I'd classify as elite level talent.

I thought about that
but Ichiro isn't on 2007 Erik Bedard's level.

Well
Everybody remembers Bavasi saying we wouldnt go with 2 rookie outfielders (Jones/Wlad) this year.. Now that Jones is gone, does that mean Wlad has a chance? Him breaking camp with the big club never really crossed my mind

You know,
of all the things Bavasi could have done that the online fans would not want him to do, this is really  the best of them. So.

by Mere Tantalisers on Jan 27, 2008 8:05 PM PST   0 recs

Your hopes could still be dashed
"Bavasi stated Bedard, who has yet to pitch 200 innings in his career, will most likely convert to a reliever to replace the departing lefty Sherril, ensuring Horacio Ramirez will remain in the rotation."

Don't say shit like that!
Hard work never killed nobody, but I won't take my chances.

by JAH on Jan 27, 2008 8:16 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Also,
as long as we're trying to feel good about this, there is in fact an outside chance that Bedard signs an extension with us. I mean, that was just one quote about wanting to test free agency, and that was when he was in Baltimore. He may sing a different tune in Seattle.
Think about it; you're a great pitcher in his prime, you're stuck in Baltimore for another two years. Do you tell them that you're into hanging out longer, or do you tell them there;s no way to increase your chances of leaving sooner?

by Mere Tantalisers on Jan 27, 2008 8:07 PM PST   0 recs

I don't know if I want that yet
Bedard has to prove that he can be a little more durable.

by Jeff on Jan 27, 2008 8:12 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

His injury last year
was nothing structural, so I don't think he is any more a risk than any other starter. Then again, I haven't watched his delivery closely, and even if I had would have nothing of value to say about it. All the same, 180 Bedard innings is something worth paying through the nose for. 220 would be better, but 180 is pretty good.

by Mere Tantalisers on Jan 27, 2008 8:27 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Last year isn't it, though
he has a fairly long history of various wears and tears.

Vidro and Sexson too. Where the fuck is Devin?

600 miles away...
But if I ever get within shouting distance, it is getting done.

by Devin on Jan 27, 2008 8:19 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

A few questions you may want to ask
  • Why do you suck so much?
  • Do you feel bad about sucking so much?
  • Hey, stop sucking so much.

by JLC on Jan 27, 2008 8:23 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Well, I was just going to bring a crowbar...
But I guess your way would work too.

by Devin on Jan 27, 2008 8:25 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

If you try and use that on Vidro
you'll never see your crowbar again.

I was only aware things went in
Didn't want to think about them coming out. So....thanks. Can't wait to start thinking about that again.

That last one isn't a question.

from the camden chat on the bedard jones trade...

10:07pm A blogger at SBN's Lookout Landing speculates that Jones' physical might be in Bethesda, which would mean technically MacPhail isn't lying.

an insider close to several ML organizations has said that the Orioles will be moving to Bethesda in the near future.

by Mere Tantalisers on Jan 27, 2008 8:29 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Bethesda? Yuck
Adam Jones is going to hate Maryland. Hope he enjoys the smell of dead fish, skunks, and chicken houses. Oh, and dirty water.

by Slica on Jan 27, 2008 8:31 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Ummm....
Bethesda is one of the nicest and most expensive cities to live in the United States. I was fortunate enough to spend 6 months of my life living there.

by Wilder83 on Jan 27, 2008 8:56 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

It still does not make up
for the rest of Maryland. This place will be grating on him.

Baltimore and DC are terrible places. He wont get to see Montgomery county much. As nice as Bethesda can be, it has little 'action' for a guy in his 20s.

by Slica on Jan 27, 2008 9:00 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I concede the rest of Maryland is horrid.
The reason: D.C. is kicking the ghetto out of the city. Anacostia (Southeast D.C.) used to be a wealthy Jewish community. Today, it is ghetto, which I lived there for 6 months as well, but they are slowly buying up the area and everyone can only move out to Maryland.

Capital Hill is really nice and so is Northwest D.C.  There is an actual street on Capital Hill (or at least there was 4 years ago) with million dollar townhouses on one side of the street and drug/homicide infested ghetto on the other. It is quite amazing to see how the demographics are changing in the area.

Although, College Park is quite interesting where UM girls are more than happy to share how endowed they are.

by Wilder83 on Jan 27, 2008 9:08 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I cant disagree at all
DC amazes me. Capitol Hill is awesome...DC has some awesome spots here and there, but like night and day...one street looks great, the next street looks rundown and pitiful.

Baltimore is pure dirty. The harbor has some fun places, but its too dirty and the water looks disgusting.

I live on the Eastside of the Chesapeake and this whole area is pathetic. There is such a thing as too much farmland. It amazes me how country this state is...but there are small ghettos all over the place. I lived in one that was in the middle of nowhere. Ghetto surrounded by farmland and rednecks. Its pretty strange.

by Slica on Jan 27, 2008 9:16 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I lived in Iowa and Pullman for 5 years.
Yes, there is.

Baltimore
Grew on me when I was living there. It's hard to explain, but I think most people who transplant there develop a love-hate relationship with the place. It's actually a great place to be in your 20s.

I'd say
Bavasi: "We're not there yet.  I can't tell you anything."

(But we're going to be there soon.)

MacPhail: "We do not have an agreement with the Mariners."

("Do Not" is not the same as "Will Not".  It's likely they "Do Not" have an agreement until Tuesday)

by ThundaPC on Jan 27, 2008 8:52 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Ok so
I'm cool with having a kick ass pitcher. Though wny thoughts on who will play right? Also who will take over for Raul when he can't hit anymore?

I don't think we can fuck the angels with out some bats.

by InSpokane on Jan 27, 2008 8:34 PM PST   0 recs

I've just been wondering about this
What's up with Kyle Loshe?  Yes i'm trying to change the subject.  If he only wanted a 2 yr deal I'd give it to him instead of trading Jones for Bedard.  Just saying...

Fuck.
BOTH Tillman and Butler? Sweet Jesus. I'm ready to get fucking pissed now.

SHIT ON A BISCUIT, that is a stupid trade. Let the PTTE fucking flow.

by JLC on Jan 27, 2008 8:41 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Thats ridiculous
Butler and Tillman? Pfft.

Regardless of how hungry they are, im sure if McPhail and Bavasi sat down for pizza, McPhail would ask for 7 of the 8 slices, and Bavasi would give it to him.

by Slica on Jan 27, 2008 8:42 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

If the pizza is Chicago style deep dish
Bavasi would win, I wouldn't want to be around someone who had 7 slices of that!
LET WLAD BAT!!!!

by MFAN on Jan 27, 2008 8:44 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Not sure
But apparently Bavasi will get some coke in return.

Not sure what 'flavor' of 'coke' it would be. But I bet it involves husky elbows and twitching the likes of Johjima's back.

by Slica on Jan 27, 2008 8:47 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Translation
Weeeeee = FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!

whatever = Why would i be surprised? Bavasi is a dumbshit!

by Edgar for Pres on Jan 27, 2008 8:47 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Who needs pitching prospects anyway?
We'll just block them in the bullpen.

by Jeff on Jan 27, 2008 8:48 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

How many would we have left?
Aumont. Kahn? Rohbourgh? Ichiro? Feirabend.

Unimpressive list.

Good greatness, why not trade Morrow (who will be a reliever now) instead of Jones? I will never understand that, regardless of how the trade looks in hindsight.

Yes, I said good greatness. Fuck the angels.

by Slica on Jan 27, 2008 8:53 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Perhaps because the Os
wouldn't center a deal around Morrow? I'd be shocked if Bavasi didn't at least try that.

by Matthew on Jan 27, 2008 9:02 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

You can still be shocked by the Mariners?
I thought Morrow was 'offlimits'...maybe that was the consensus and not the truth? Nobody said Bavasi talked about him, and in some places, it was said Bavasi was reluctant to include him in a deal. Who knows.

Nothing shocks me with this team.

by Slica on Jan 27, 2008 9:05 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Jones was also said to be offlimits
earlier in the offseason. Things change. Bavasi said that himself.

This thing took 6 weeks, they must have had discussions about pretty much every possible angle. The O's desperately need a CF for the future and they can't get Pie back for Roberts then you can bet they were saying No Jones; No deal to Bill.

by Matthew on Jan 27, 2008 9:09 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Ramirez and Paredes
But yeah, not much after we trade Tillman AND Butler. Insanity.

by JLC on Jan 27, 2008 9:13 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Decent pitching prospects that would remain:
Morrow (stuck in bullpen forever)
Ramirez (only Everett experience)
Aumont (zero experience)
Paredes (only Everett experience)

Haha. Us.

by Jeff on Jan 27, 2008 9:14 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

What about Fister and Nose?
Hey, come on, stop laughing. It's not that funny.

by Matthew on Jan 27, 2008 9:16 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Haha
My favorite non-prospect pitcher is Steve Uhlmansiek.

by Slica on Jan 27, 2008 9:20 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

How could I forget Ramirez?
He looks like the real deal...needs to move higher, though.

I havent seen enough of Paredes. Any idea which affiliate he will be in this year?

I'm not sure what I think of that. Butler and Mickolio is <<< Triunfel, but still

I wouldn't be too bummed about losing Butler or Mickolio, though both are alright.
