It's Appropriately Raining In San Diego Right Now

I know the majority of us aren't particularly thrilled at the moment, but while a longer post is coming later on, at least Erik Bedard is really fucking good.

Yay Bedard
That really doesn't soften the blow as much as it should.

Any ideas about whether we will
be able to resign Bedard to an extension?

Also what is Bedard's health status right now?

by vkut79 on Jan 27, 2008 4:53 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Too early for extension talk
And physically, he should be fine, although he'll always be a little fragile.

Its raining in the bay too :(
Our rotation is pretty amazing.  How about we trade Washburn to somebody for a decent RF.

Is it kinda wierd to anybody that our rotation is basically locked up now for a while?

by Edgar for Pres on Jan 27, 2008 4:55 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

of course 3/5th of it leaves after 2009
soo.... we better have some SP prospects ready by then.

by Matthew on Jan 27, 2008 4:56 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

This deal only works out
in the event that Bedard has great seasons here and enjoys his time enough that he'd consider signing here.

Wouldn't the FO have to throw out the most money for him in 3 years if Adam Jones is putting up monster numbers?

I fucking hate you Mariners

by kentroyals5 on Jan 27, 2008 4:57 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Hell yea
This is a hefty gamble with immediate benefits with the side effect of possible long term pain.

Our rotation is pretty tight now.  No more HoRam/Morrow for #5.

by ThundaPC on Jan 27, 2008 5:00 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

FIP/xFIP/Chone ERA projection
Felix  3.83/3.41/3.53
Bedard  3.33/3.13/3.58
Washburn  4.83/5.30/4.31
Batista  4.61/5.12/4.60
Silva  4.35/4.67/4.48

You've got to love those Chone predictions.  If that is right I'll be very happy.

by Edgar for Pres on Jan 27, 2008 5:03 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I'm not gonna say I don't believe that
ok, yeah i don't believe that'll happen.

by Edgar for Pres on Jan 27, 2008 5:05 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah
if he repeats 2007 in SafeCo, he'd be under 3.

by Matthew on Jan 27, 2008 5:09 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't even want to think what would happen
if 2007 turns out to be an aberration.

by Jeff on Jan 27, 2008 5:09 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm just saying that there has only been
66 SP in the last 10 years to get an ERA < 3.  The odds are against him.  If anything goes wrong then basically you aren't gonna get it.  I'm not going to say Bedard's year last year was a fluke but I'll be surprised if he does better than it.

by Edgar for Pres on Jan 27, 2008 5:13 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That's fair
yeah, I don't think the odds of a sub-3 ERA are >50%. But they're still pretty good. If anyone's going to do it this year, Bedard has as good a chance as anyone, save for Peavy.

by Jeff on Jan 27, 2008 5:15 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

the good news is that I found no evidence of that
his 2007 performance was real.

Boy, it would have made sense to hire Mazzone huh?

by Matthew on Jan 27, 2008 5:15 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

sorry, I flipped the meaning
I found no evidence that his 2007 wasn't real.

by Matthew on Jan 27, 2008 5:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

We hurt now, but lets have fun:
2007:

1.Felix
2.WASH
3.Batista
4.HoRam
5.Weaver

2008:

1.Bedard
1.Felix
3.Silva
4.Batista
5.Washburn

Very, very nice rotation.  If our defence plays to its potential, we should be hard to score against.

And to think, I could have chosen to support the Yankees or Red Sox...

by EnglishMariner on Jan 27, 2008 5:04 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

If our defense plays to its potential
we'll be a pretty bad defensive team.  Ibanez and Wilkerson in the OF?  Yeah.  No thanks.

It obviously makes you guys better short term, and by 2009 you'll have the money to sign him to an extension.  Losing Jones though...yikes.

except that while Jones is a heavy price to pay, Bedard is in my top five favorite pitchers to watch in baseball. Complete stud, and the health issues he's had seem behind him now.

Baker says he's open to an extension now.
So that's something. That would make it better, certainly, and would negate a little of that "We would have had Adam Jones for 6 years rather than 2" problem. So that's something.

My Mariner fandom
all hinging on Triunfel, now.

I love having Bedard, but this a steep price.

We also learned that when Bavasi and another GM are 'not budging', Bavasi will cave.

Side note, this definitely qualifies for gamethread emotion, right? Fuck damn shit.

by Slica on Jan 27, 2008 5:52 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

We don't know if Bavasi caved.
Won't really know until we see who else is in the deal.

by Jeff on Jan 27, 2008 5:56 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think it's MacPhail who caved
I recall Bavasi saying he put his best deal on the table and it was just a waiting game at that point.

Of course the price could still be very high even if that's the case.

by ThundaPC on Jan 27, 2008 6:01 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually
most indications are that Bavasi left out a "final offer" on the table for Baltimore (Jones+Tillman+Sherill) a while ago and left it at that.

Slowly the Reds dropped out since they refused to give up Bruce, so the Orioles were left to accept the Mariners' offer. Rumor is that 4 players are going to the Orioles, but I doubt the 4th is important.

I'd be surprised if Bavasi doesn't feel like he came out on the winning side here. He obviously wasn't adverse to trading Jones in the first place.

by JLC on Jan 27, 2008 5:58 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Good point, both of you
Sadly im trying to see the bright side...we got a good pitcher, and someone said he may be open  for an extension...and of course 'it could be worse'...

Still, Carlos Triunfel is the difference between me following the Mariners in the long term vs. me following the Brewers. Good God can they keep at LEAST one of my favorite players? :(.

I'll never EVER leave the Mariners
just saying.

So....What are we HAPPY with giving up?

Is AJ/Tillman/Sherrill the best we're gonna see?

I'm happy with giving that up, when you really think about it(that AJ was leaving no matter what).

If Carlos/Morrow are BOTH NOT in the deal, I'd say we didnt do horrendously.

by PShwa on Jan 27, 2008 6:01 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

100% true.
Just saying in terms of we KNOW what were getting/giving up.

there is still the chance Tillman isnt who we think he'll be.

same with Carlos.

But your point makes sense.

Im happy with Carlos staying, truthfully.

by PShwa on Jan 27, 2008 6:05 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Pretty satisfied with that
I'd like a little more than just Bedard, though, but whatever.

I want to wait until this is all finished. If the Mariners continue to run Ibanez and Vidro out there every day and use Morrow in the pen, we didn't gain much for '08.

But if they sign Kenny Lofton and/or Wilkerson as platoon players and move Ibanez to 1B/DH.....different story.

Not loving the trade for Jason Bay talk, though.

Trying to calm down. For me, its not because its a bad trade...its because its my favorite players. Again. Thats why im whining so much. Another Question
I realize we should wait until the dust settles, but its a painful wait...so

What happens to Ho? Morrow?

Our 3-5 pitchers cost a ton for their spots now.

by Slica on Jan 27, 2008 6:35 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Ho disappears
and Morrow keeps the same role in the bullpen.

by Jeff on Jan 27, 2008 6:37 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm
I would agree on Ho, especially if he sucks in ST.

Morrow is pretty interesting. He belongs in Triple A starting, but if Sherill is involved (he claims he hasnt been called about anything yet), I guess Morrow is a lock for the bullpen.

This whole thng is giving me brain cramps.

by Slica on Jan 27, 2008 6:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

2 ifs for the bullpen
if Sherrill isn't dealt and if Lowe returns to his 2006 form, would there be a team with a better pitching staff?

Rotation of Bedard, Felix, Silva, Washburn Batista

Bullpen of JJ, Sherrill, Morrow, Lowe, O'Flaherty, Green, Rowland-Smith

I know that it probably wasn't the greatest (or even good) trade, but Erik fricking Bedard is the best pitcher the Mariners have had since Randy Johnson (until Felix figures out how to pitch a little better) come what may, but as of today I am optimistic that this could work out (unless we gave up Triunfel in which case I may go murder Bavasi)

How THE FUCK does a PITCHER HELP THE OUTFIELD!!!!!
At the end of 2007, the Mariners had a few problems:

2 shitty starting pitchers
2 shitty outfielders. One of which was rated as one of the WORST at his JOB in the industry.
A first baseman that was so bad, he even said (yesterday) he prefered playing away because no one boo-ed him there.
A DH who can't field, can't run and do not hit for power. (And if you watched the games, he got a bunch of hits because the other team was unable to turn a double play!)
AND finally one bullpen spot that went to a physically more mature pitcher that had nothing else to give to this team other than showing the kids what their balls were going to look like at
the age of 40.
______________

Bedard is a great pitcher. I will be very happy to see him pitch. I will take 100's of photos of him over his time with the Mariners. With any luck

BUT how the fuck does Bedard help with any of this?

by mark s on Jan 27, 2008 7:56 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Well
More strikeouts = fewer balls to the outfield.

But other than that, yeah.
