78-70

If you watched this series in its entirety and didn't come away thinking that there's something absolutely, criminally wrong with the way this organization evaluates pitchers, then you should probably go to the doctor, because you might be retarded. The Devil Rays are one of the worst teams in baseball, and the four guys they threw out on the mound are better than any non-Felix starter we have in the system. A team with this many resources at its disposal should never find itself in this kind of situation, but here we are, and honestly, I don't see any imminent escape.

Bill, you tried guys who pitch to contact. You tried guys who pitch to the defense. You tried guys who pitch to the ballpark. Now how about some guys who pitch with ability?

Biggest Contribution: King Awesome, +14.8%
Biggest Suckfest: Jarrod Washburn, -25.6%
Most Important AB: Broussard DP, -18.5%
Most Important Pitch: Crawford double, -15.9%
Total Contribution by Pitcher(s): -27.1%
Total Contribution by Hitters: -22.9%
Total Contribution by Opposition: 0.0%

Hopefully Aumont is a sign of better things to come.

Man
If Tampa Bay had a bullpen we would've gotten swept.

Building a bullpen is easy and cheap.

Holy crap.

Oh
And I'm already starting to prepare for the heartbreaking possibility that the Mariners are going to have the best seats in the house while watching BOTH the Angels and the Indians clinch the division from the dugout.

What a perfect bitchslap in the face to end this season...

I went to this game
First one since July 15th 1999

Miguel Batista & Jarrod Washburn
Undoubtedly, Batista (ERA+: 92; xFIP: 5.13; GB%: 44.2%; K/9: 6.13; K/BB: 1.60) and Washburn (ERA+: 96; xFIP: 5.35; GB%: 37.0%; K/9: 5.23; K/BB: 1.64) are both over-the-hill has-beens who are on the downside of their respective careers.

In essence, starting pitchers need to be either proficient at striking out batters (e.g., Erik Bedard, Scott Kazmir, Jake Peavy, Johan Santana, Chris Young, et al.) or inducing ground balls (e.g., Fausto Carmona, Tim Hudson, Derek Lowe, Chien-Ming Wang, Brandon Webb, et al.); however, neither Batista nor Washburn -- unlike Felix Hernandez (ERA+: 107; xFIP: 3.38; GB%: 60.6%; K/9: 8.06; K/BB: 3.10), who's an all-around talent -- can effectively do those things.

The sad thing, though, is that Batista (2008: $9,000,000 & 2009: $10,000,000) and Washburn (2008: $10,000,000 & 2009: $10,000,000) are each due an exorbitant amount of money in salary throughout the next two seasons. That disgusts me.

Thank you Mr. Obvious...
I said REFUSE to regress, God dammit.

There's a much more concise way to put this:
A great pitcher excels in three areas:

(1) throwing strikes
(2) missing bats
(3) keeping the ball on the ground

We have one guy who does all three and four guys who do either one or none.

by Jeff on Sep 16, 2007 6:40 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Speaking of Batista and Washburn
"I made good pitches," Washburn said. "The only mistake I made the whole game was the home run to [Carlos] Pena. But it's frustrating. I thought I threw the ball well and didn't have anything to show for it."
-------------

Those two are sounding too much alike for comfort.

by ThundaPC on Sep 16, 2007 6:19 PM PDT   0 recs

So...
Did Batista do good enough to be dumped on some crap ass unsuspecting team?

By this, I don't mean tonight...
I know Washburnator pitched tonight.
But I think this gut punch ends it all for the year.

Okay, here's some non-offensive video
MLB 2K7 fun with Richie Sexson, in which he apparently has incredible athletic ability:

for 15M
I feel like Richie Sexson owes the fans enough that he must pull off this play in reality.

OK
Who was the asshole here that convinced me to buy that game?

by Robert on Sep 17, 2007 9:56 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I shared this with my friend who's a M's fan...
His response:

"So is the glitch that Sexson was on base?"

Winner.

Also, I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned
But JI
JIM THOME hit his 500th home run today.  It was a walkoff home run.  You can guess Hawk's reaction.

by Gomez on Sep 16, 2007 10:31 PM PDT   0 recs

Yay
But I like Nick Swisher charging the mound better.

JIM-JAM NEEDS THE DUGOUT TO MAKE A RETURN OF FANTASTIC PERPORTONS

by JI on Sep 17, 2007 10:36 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I want the Dugout back
I noticed they didn't even post a link to AOL Fanhouse on the site.  It's like they're talking up the transition but... they know it's not gonna work.

by Gomez on Sep 17, 2007 10:53 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I searched AOL fanhouse
and I didn't see a link or anything promoting it.

I don't see how they can move to a place like that and not be sued for liable. Either that, or they had second thoughts once people started e-mailing them with their concerns.

Still, I don't blame them for trying to cash in. The Dugout is totally worth paying for.

by JI on Sep 17, 2007 11:09 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Also
Swisher gave a perfect demonstration of how to charge the mound.  No half-ass walk over and yell crap like Ventura or Manny did: you CHARGE THE MOUND.

by Gomez on Sep 17, 2007 10:45 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Time was of the essence
He had to get to Padilla before Francisco got to a chair.

by Paytheline on Sep 17, 2007 11:21 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I dunno
How's Francisco's chair throwing arm lately?  Methinks he lost some distance during the hiatus.

by Gomez on Sep 17, 2007 12:08 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually
Chopping down your opponent before you beat him down is not a bad idea, especially if it's The Dumbest Man Larry Bowa's Ever Met.  He may forget how to get up.

by Gomez on Sep 17, 2007 12:09 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Well
the plan to take him down by the legs was great except for the fact that Swisher missed. Padilla was going to pound on him until someone else dragged him off. Don't these guys watch UFC? Sheesh.
"You guys should be in every major city. This is some heavy shit. This is, like, Lone Ranger heavy, man."

by AZSEAfan on Sep 17, 2007 2:40 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

That was Swisher's problem!
Needed more submission armbars.
