When you watch a team go into a tailspin and drop almost entirely out of the playoff picture like the Mariners did, and then you watch a win that makes you want to believe again - even if just the tiniest bit, and only for a fleeting moment -  you know you just witnessed something incredible. Yeah, the D'Rays came at us with an ugly lineup and a bullpen that'd make Smilin' Bob upset, and no, for the second night in a row it shouldn't have taken this much effort to win by a run, but there is just no quicker way to pick yourself up off the mat. This was the most fun I've had in a month.

Biggest Contribution: Yuniesky Betancourt, +43.1%
Biggest Suckfest: Jeff Weaver, -33.9%
Most Important AB: Betancourt double, +42.8%
Most Important Pitch: Upton single, -9.1%
Total Contribution by Pitcher(s): -15.8%
Total Contribution by Hitters: +65.6%
Total Contribution by Opposition: +0.2%

(What is this chart?)

From time to time, my brother asks me if I ever feel bad for whacking lousy teams. This usually comes up after the Red Sox lay the gauntlet down against the Orioles or D'Rays. My answer's always the same: "I do feel bad for beating up on teams like the Pirates and Royals. I do not feel bad for beating up on the D'Rays, because in two or three years I have a hard time imagining that they'll feel bad for returning the favor." That organization is loaded with more talent than you can believe from top to bottom, so you should enjoy these wins now while you can, as it won't be long before they're taking out a decade's worth of frustration on everyone who used to laugh at them during recess.

I'm going to go sleep off the last remnants of a nasty cold. I imagine my chances of waking up healthy and happy tomorrow morning are better than I thought they'd be three hours ago. Behold the wonders of psychology.

In the end, ultimately, that graph up there ...
will mirror the Seattle Mariners' meteoric rise to the 2007 World Series Championship.

I guarantee it!

Looking at that last picture posted by JI
I think FSN has assigned Red his own cameraman.  Pretty soon he will have his own reality show.

Weaver looked fine
I know the recap didn't really touch on Weaver's performance, and I know Pena hit that 3-2 pitch in the first inning hard down the right field line, but think about the rest of Weaver's night:

Pre-Chaves mound visit in the second:
-Pena hit a ball hard and some guy took a sweeper-swing at a pitch and dumped one in front of Ichiro, who then went on to muff what was a very makeable out at the plate.
-A couple three seeing-eye singles in second lead to another tough situation.  All ground balls, none hit hard, and no line drives, plus a Johnny Gomes flyout to center that was nothing more than a harmless high pop.

Post-Chaves pointless, needless mound visit:
-loss of all control as a result of trying to be too fine.
-loss of all control as a result of shear and utter contempt for M's coaching staff.
-relieved of duties for the night.

Jeff Weaver didn't have a good start to the season, and he's not having a good finish.  I realize anyway the numbers get cut up, he's pitched poorly, and it's surely not the fault of everyone but him.

But seriously - the guy is a head-case, and he doesn't seem to react very well to management meddling with him and telling him how to get better or what to do.  He's going to do it his way.

If the team wanted to pay him a bunch of money in the off-season, they should have taken a much more supportive stance with him than the usual routine implored with pitchers still learning the ropes or looking for help.

Leave him alone and let him pitch next time.

I kind of agree w/ this.
McLaren is very quick to pull guys. One of my favorite things about the last two games was that he gave our pen-guys a longer leash.

Fuck the heck???
Maybe he is quick to pull guys not named Washburn. Also, Felix threw like 120 pitches the other day in a pointless game.

Mac has not been nearly quick enough to pull guys not getting the job done considering the roster expansion.

I don't totally agree.
I liked how he let our relievers face more than 2 batters before he pulled them the last two games.  It was probably out of necessity as he had over-worked everyone else, but Weaver was pulled pretty early.

I can't say I can defend McLaren for pulling Weaver early though.  He didn't look totally crappy by my eye, but his last few starts had me doubting, so I understood the quick pull.

At this point, leaving starters in too long is dangerous.  I just wish McLaren would realize this with our pitchers who are not named Jeff Weaver.

Heh
McLaren:  This is crap.  Go talk to him.
Chaves:  What
McLaren:  Go talk to him.
Chaves:  Sigh ::jogs out to mound::
Weaver:  ::emitting scent of ganja::
Weaver:  Dude, I'm like so totally get lit up, dude.
Chaves:  Hey
Weaver:  WTF are you doing here?
Chaves:  Uh
Weaver:  You think i don't know how to pitch or some shit, man.  I know how to pitch
Chaves:  Just uh
Weaver:  Why you gotta come out and kill my buzz even more than these green and grey men already have.  Who the fuck are these guys they look like magoo
Chaves:  Look just uh... make your pitches, uh... throw strikes
Weaver:  no shit
Chaves:  yeah uh... and get ahead.
Weaver:  Get a life.
Chaves:  uh okay ::jogs back to dugout::
Johjima:  Stop throwing suck pitch up and away.
Weaver:  Stop speaking Japanese.
Johjima:
McLaren:  Is he alright?
Chaves:  Same as usual.
McLaren:  ::sigh:: Why do we employ you?

It's straight and to the point
I like it. Also reminds me of "Where's Waldo"

Yes, except Wlad is totally awesome
I think I would punch Waldo in the ear if I ever found him, whereas if I instead found Wlad, I would give him a hug and most likely some dap. At least Wlad doesn't dress up like some candy-cane asshole then dress up other people exactly like him just to tease children.

Sorry, I hate that guy.
