Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

9/13: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 7:05pm PDT

Harris 2B Ichiro CF Norton DH Beltre 3B Pena 1B Ibanez "LF" Upton CF Guillen RF Young RF Broussard 1B Gomes LF Vidro DH Casanova C Johjima C Guzman 3B Ballgame 2B Velandia SS Betancourt SS ---------- ----------

Hammel (2-4, 6.57)          Weaver (6-12, 6.05)

According to THT, this is a matchup of the two worst team defenses in the AL, and two of the three worst defenses in the Majors (God bless you, Florida Marlins). At a staggeringly bad 136 plays below average, the D'Rays have cost themselves nigh ten wins or so with bad glovework alone. Bandbox ballparks aren't the only thing that keeps pitchers up late at night.

Also, congratulations to Adam Jones, who's big home run last night earned him one of the best spectator seats in the house.

I love it....
Jones and Yuni win the game last night and they are rewarded with seats on the bench today.

no Rob Johnson
booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

by Matthew on Sep 13, 2007 6:38 PM PDT reply actions

Well, we must remember
that Jones needs to sit on the bench and learn how the game is played. Evidently his time on the pine led to his four bagger last night. Just think how awesome he will be the last few days of the season after he spends most of the remaining time learning from the bench.

by Coach @ Lookout Landing on Sep 13, 2007 6:41 PM PDT reply actions

Good point...
Jones is still getting used to eating in 5 star restaurants, sleeping in 5 star hotels, and banging perfect 10s.

It takes time for ones body to adjust to that lifestyle before he can become a productive major leaguer.

by PLU Tim on Sep 13, 2007 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Good god
I can't even believe the Rays' lineup tonight. I know Crawford's serving his suspension and all, but Maddon had to play stiffs like Velandia, Casanova, and Norton as well? Ugh, that lineup is an embarrassment.

Good luck tonight guys.

by killa3312 on Sep 13, 2007 6:50 PM PDT reply actions

I know I should be shot for even saying this...
But with the Yankees and Angels losing tonight, wouldn't it be fun to go on a 7 game winning streak and have the Yanks get swept by Boston?  Or would that just be throwing us back into the torture chamber for the last 11 games of the season?

by LongBeachDave on Sep 13, 2007 7:00 PM PDT reply actions

I dunno
Winning seven straight games only to have the Angels end our playoff hopes once and for all will be hard to swallow.  Not that this isn't bad enough already.

by ThundaPC on Sep 13, 2007 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Speaking of great D Rays defense
Delmon Young could have easily caught that if he didn't get lost for no reason in the corner.

by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 13, 2007 7:16 PM PDT reply actions

Carlos Pena
Why does he all of a sudden have a 1.010 OPS this year? What happened to this guy?

by naviomelo on Sep 13, 2007 7:16 PM PDT reply actions

Heh
Peña was drafted by the Texas Rangers with the tenth pick in the first round of the 1998 amateur draft. After he debuted in the 2001 season, he was traded in the offseason with Mike Venafro to the Oakland Athletics for Jason Hart, Gerald Laird, Ryan Ludwick, and Mario Ramos. He was then traded again in July 2002 to the Detroit Tigers in a three team trade that sent Jeff Weaver to the New York Yankees and Ted Lilly to the A's.

Late bloomer, I guess.  He always had a big bat.  He just kept getting benched, cut, traded, and playing in Oakland and Detroit sure didn't help.

by Gomez on Sep 13, 2007 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions

See
there's proof that Ichiro doesn't have one of the best arms in baseball.

Jeez, what is it with Weaver?
He gets 2 outs on 4 pitches, then goes 3-2 on the next 2 guys...and what happens?  HITS, that's what.

by LongBeachDave on Sep 13, 2007 10:24 PM PDT up reply actions

At least you guys don't follow the Rays
I tell you, they should pay me to watch this team. It's unbelievable how bad this bullpen is. That's three straight games where they've blown at least a four run lead.

Get a SS and 2B who play solid defense
call up Longoria... and guess what?  You're gonna have a pretty good ballclub in Tampa.

Decent relievers are actually pretty easy to find.  Your GM just needs to do a better job of finding ones that won't walk your opponents back into ballgames.

by Gomez on Sep 13, 2007 10:34 PM PDT up reply actions

but the Rays have always, save their first season, had terrible bull pens. We could put Mariano Rivera in his prime on this team, and he'd probably magically turn into a crappy pitcher.

Jeff Smulyen wanted to take the M's
to Tampa Bay, before Nintendo bought the team...Ron Barr, that a-hole, cried about how "foreign ownership" would ruin MLB, and we should just give the team up to Tampa.  Jerry Reinsdorf used TB to get the Illinois Legislature to build that joke, the "NEW" Comisky Park, literally unplugging the clock in Springfield so they could come up with a financing plan.  Poor TB has been used so often for other teams to get what they wanted...I thought Lou would turn it around for them...

obviously I don't think we are going to the playoffs, but we are 5 1/2 back, the Yankees play 3 in Boston and we have 3 at home against Tampa.

We do have a legit chance to at least crawl back into the race this weekend.

I went back to GameDay
just so I could re-live that bottom of the 8th, and remember the despair I felt when Vidro grounded into that DP with the bases loaded, and we were down 7-4.  It was so nice to see a big inning that finally mattered...well, sort of mattered.
