Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

8/7: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 4:05pm PDT

Ichiro CF Roberts 2B Vidro DH Patterson CF Guillen RF Markakis RF King Awesome 3B Millar 1B Ibanez Spasming Corpse Tejada SS Sexson 1B Huff DH Johjima C Mora 3B Lopez 2B Hernandez C Betancourt SS Payton LF ---------- ----------

Weaver (2-10, 6.32)         Trachsel (5-7, 4.97)

In 20 starts, Steve Trachsel has a 0.70 K/BB ratio. The next-worst over the past three years? Steve Trachsel in 2006, at 1.01. Of the three things a pitcher needs to do to succeed - throw strikes, miss bats, and keep the ball down - he does exactly none of them well. He's also deathly slow. Say hello to the worst skillset in baseball.

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

Welcome to Bonedville
Beluga Tits liked the meatballs so much, he's recommending them to Reefer Jaw.

Baltimore since ASB: 14-8, 112 RS, 89 RA
Us: 11-13, 102 RS, 122 RA

Just sayin'.

Well
It seems to me the M's have been doing better of late against the pitchers who just plain suck.

It always starts with "Damn this guy can't throw strikes, we're screwed."  But I'm not too concerned.

That said the M's need to win about 15 of their next 20 for me too feel good (BAL, CWS, MIN, CWS, MIN, TEX).  And figuring Ho is gonna start 5 of those I'm a tad worried.

What Moses was to the Jews, Adams Jones is to the Mariners

See my post upstairs.
Baltimore is actually playing pretty well since the ASB, and if you look at Pythag, they project to a 56-54 record; we project to 54-55.

This is a more even matchup than it looks like in the standings, IMO.

by eponymous coward on Aug 7, 2007 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions

We'd do even better if we'd play Adam Jones
Especially against a guy like Trachsel who's way less effective against righty hitters.  So far this season, he has allowed:

.220/.367/.345 by lefties.
.325/.356/.506 by righties.

So naturally, McLaren lets Raul play instead.

That makes me so happ......err....wait a minute.....no Broussard in the lineup today?  That means.....

  3. J. Guillen, RF
  4. A. Beltre, 3B

Glad to see the kid is getting playing time. Using him this sparingly almost makes we wish Jones was still in Tacoma. If they stunt this guy's development, I'm gonna be seriously pissed.

Brett Myers anyone?
I can't imagine he'd be much worse than HoRam in the rotation. His numbers are mediocre, but they're better than HoRam pretty much across the board. And he can even miss some bats!

I would take Myers in a heartbeat.
The guys had extraordinarily bad luck in his career as while he's not a flyball pitcher (47.2%/32.1% GB/FB% career) he's allowed about 15% of those flyballs to turn into homeruns. If only they DFA'd him. :(

Greyhounds and Bloody Marys. Not so good for martinis.

Good Strong Bloody Mary:

2 parts V8
Bit of Tabasco

Grind of pepper
Squeeze of lemon

Mix well, serve over ice with stalk of celery.

Barry Bonds is infinity times better than Hank Aaron, regardless of how many more home runs he hits.

by Jeff Sullivan on Aug 7, 2007 7:21 PM PDT reply actions

Aaron's 755 >>> Bonds' 755
But Bonds is/was obviously a better player.

NO WAY
its only because of his arm protection.... DUH

by thenatural on Aug 7, 2007 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Aaron should have 733
He probably should have retired after 1974.  He was clearly washed up a la Willie Mays in his last 2 years.

by Gomez on Aug 7, 2007 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions

You can say that about many players.
Aaron trudged through some tough hitter's eras, I think his record is more impressive even if he isn't the better player.

by JI on Aug 7, 2007 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm saying his last 2 years
were Willie Mays with the Mets bad, as in an embarrassment.

He also played in Fulton County Stadium, which was a hitter friendly environment.  Bonds played much of his career in Candlestick, which was cold, clammy and offensive death.

by Gomez on Aug 7, 2007 7:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Cuts both ways
Bonds played in the expansion era which brought about more HRs thanks to the lack of quality pitching to go around. Tough to compare historical stats.

Never have liked Bonds, never will.  Honestly, glad it is over, because I was getting tired of hearing about it.  I wish he had pulled something or worse...

Honestly, if he had just gotten a hit, I would have just never picked up the ball.  Just told him to run around the bases, he can have it.

as I can read.  My apologies for posting on a baseball blog, since I am not a fan.

Guess I am just a fan of my brother throwing a little white ball...

and sitting for 3 hours watching 8 guys stand around, while one other guy throws the little white sphere, all the while some other guy swings a stick made of wood hoping to hit said sphere...

who knew that a non-fan would waste so much of his life doing that.

you aren't alone
I've been a baseball fan for longer then alot of you have been alive (yeah I'm an old fart), and I've never cared about personal achievements in the game.... didn't care when Ichiro broke the record for most hits, didn't care when Ripken broke the iron man, and didn't care when Bonds took the homerun title.  I'm a baseball fan because I love the game of baseball, the game where 9 men are on the field doing everything they can to the best of their abilities to beat the other 9 men they're playing against.

Individual records are great for some, but they don't mean much to me.

I have a theory.
Detroit and Boston both did badly when they played us at home.  I believe they've been starving and dehydrated since they can't trust any food or drink that enters Angels stadium.  The reason the Royals swept us is because all they usually get is seawater and moldy bread anyway.  This also explains the Angels insane home-road splits.

Bonds is an awesome talent
Too bad he had to taint that with steroids.  This is why I'm not celebrating or watching.  It may be Selig's fault that nothing was done about steroids ten years earlier, but nobody forced Barry to take anything, and I'm positive he did.  Bad role model for the kids watching the sport.

As far as the Angels go...still hate 'em.
