Around SBN: Indy 500: 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing' Set For Sunday

8/30: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 4:05pm PDT

Ichiro CF Sizemore CF Vidro "2B" Cabrera 2B Guillen DH Hafner DH Ibanez "LF" Martinez "C" Beltre 3B Garko 1B Sexson "1B" Peralta "SS" Johjima C Gutierrez RF Jones RF Michaels LF Betancourt SS Gomez 3B ---------- ----------

Ho (8-4, 6.67)              Laffey (2-1, 4.76)

By my unofficial count, there are three precious few soft-tossing left-handed groundball starting pitchers in the Majors right now. Here are two of them. Guess which one sucks.

Trick question
They all do!

This has 11-12 shoot out written all over it. Other interesting queries:

Since we're facing a lefty does Jones get a start in LF? If he goes 0-4 with 3Ks does McLaren just super glue a pine board to his back side? Is AJ a better fielder than Raul with 6' of pine stuck to his pants?

Inquiring minds want to know.

"Soft tossing" threshold
So...many..comments..

But seriously. What would that threshold be? Throws less than 90?

by Ben in Va on Aug 30, 2007 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Loosely, yeah.
I'm looking for guys who generally sit at 90 or below.

This is hardly an official survey. I guess the point is that "soft-tossing lefty groundballer" is an unusual profile, so it's weird to see two such pitchers facing off.

by Jeff Sullivan on Aug 30, 2007 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Then Loewen
shouldn't count.  He sits faster than 90, right?

Lopez sits?
That's one good thing that McLaren has done.

Sucking like Sexson is one thing, but sleepwalking out there and making multiple careless, moronic gaffes is anoher. Lopez's recent mistakes were really deflating the momentum of the team imo.

Vidro may not be great defensively, but I'd even rather see WFB out therenow compared to the recent Lopez.

The J-Lo we love will be back, but after he's had some time to get straightened out, refreshed, or whatever his problem is.

And I also hope the platoon of Sexson/Ben is now written in stone.

The pitcher
Good pitchers allow doubles to the part of the park that minimizes their value.
Also, you look over and see Garko running, you can allow a double.  It's not taking a batter off, it's smart game management.  Spread your doubles out when they can't really hurt you.

Ryan Franklin used to do that w/doubles AND homers, but YOU guys thought he was terrible.

Do I have reason to BE an optimist?
I'm going to go with "not so much right now".

Now, win the Yankee and Tigers series, and I'll be happy. But looking like crap for 3.3 consecutive games against teams we will see if we make the playoffs, with 6.7 more to follow in the next 9 days?

At this point, it's win or go home- and we're running out of time to win.

by eponymous coward on Aug 30, 2007 4:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Remember when we swept Boston
and you said we were lucky?

I don't think you enjoy success.

by Jeff Sullivan on Aug 30, 2007 4:57 PM PDT up reply actions

This team WAS lucky.
I take Pythag pretty seriously as an indicator of team quality... as well as how teams perform blowing other teams out.

The nice part is they don't make you give back wins you get being lucky, though. As I've said many times, the Florida Marlins and their championships say "Hi".

A lot of my anger and pessimism stems from the misuse of Jones, Broussard, Ho and War Veterans. This is a season where the Mariners had to be lucky and had very little margin for error- and they've made a number of unforced ones.

by eponymous coward on Aug 30, 2007 5:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn't say you were wrong.
But at no point has it seemed like you were enjoying the season. That Boston sweep might've been our peak and you immediately took to being the wet blanket.

Being a pessimist is fine, but all the time? That's gotta be depressing.

by Jeff Sullivan on Aug 30, 2007 5:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Are you crazy?
I thought we were in decent shape before starting the faceplant in Texas.

You can't ASK for anything more than controlling your own playoff destiny in August and September- and less than a week ago, we were very much in control of it, and all we needed was a non-suck finish. The problem is we're blowing it.

well, if you look at the quantities,
it's actually 3:4 parts liquor to non-liquor, not including the ice. It pales in comparison in alcohol content to a Long Island.

In Cincinnati
Bases loaded, Encarnacion hits a single - griffey on third heads home, Dunn rounds second and heads home, 2-1 Reds.  But wait, Pitt appeals.  It seems that Adam Dunn forgot to hit third base.  Adam Dunn out, 1-1.  No, wait, appeal continues.  It seems that Griffey wasn't home yet when Dunn skipped the bag, so his run doesn't count. Dunn out, 3 outs, still 1-0 Pittsburgh.

I think they may have borrowed our third base coach for that game.

Adam Jones is too young to handle a pennant race
I mean, just look at that clutch base hit. Sure, he does the "big things" that "show up" in the box score, but he just doesn't bring that veteran presence to the team. He drove in that run in a totally non-veteran way.

really, I am, but man, 1st and 2nd, no one out and a 3-0 count on Adam Jones...we should have scored more than one run.  They got their 2 in the 7th with 2 outs...

Its kinda funny to about half of us...its like someone else's kid acting out and making a fool of his parents.

Then there are the other half that really want to choke the kid to death but can't because the other half is staring and laughing

Whatever the case...I remember  a post not too long ago (by Jeff perhaps) about how its entertainnent, and you know what, pitching White in this game tonight was HILARIOUS!!!

Baker: hilarious
Eric O'Flaherty hits Ryan Garko with an 0-2 pitch, putting two on for...Rick White. Start your moaning engines please! Thing is, I know John McLaren's logic here. He's saving J.J. Putz for a save situation. Rick White is what he's got otherwise. If this blows up, it's going to look really bad. I'll tell you what, if White blows it here, I think we'll have seen the last of him in these types of late-inning situations. I'll stick to what I said earlier, White hasn't pitched all that poorly in high-leverage outings. This is what he's here for and they're using him. Let's see what happens.

Well, let's see.

White, on the mound during 3-3 tie, losing pitcher in 5-3 loss.
White, on the mound when 6-5 goes to 10-5, in a game we lose 10-6.
White, on the mound during 5-5 tie, loses 6-5.

Yeah, brilliant pitching in close games, there, buddy. I can't imagine why he got waived from a last-place NL team.

Um.
That's three strikes.

by rtang on Aug 30, 2007 8:02 PM PDT up reply actions

As well as...
retarded logic.

JJ pitched ZERO innings in those games. He's the BEST GODDAMN PITCHER ON THE TEAM.

As I said, this is like pinch-hitting WFB for Ichiro with a runner on second, down a run with two out in the ninth.

by eponymous coward on Aug 30, 2007 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh come on....
Baker seriously thinks that Rick White was brought in specifically to pitch in high-leverage situations? Who in the fuck told him that? They need to be punched in the fucking face.

This wasn't a 2 outs and no one on base situation for fuck's sake.

by PLU Tim on Aug 30, 2007 8:02 PM PDT up reply actions

No, Plaschke's an idiot.
Baker's just wrong in thinking that veteranness means anything other than you pitched in some ballgames.

Skillset's what's important, and Rick White's skillset translates to sucking. I mean, COME ON, he hasn't played on the same team two years in a row for years. You think if he was any good at all they MIGHT keep him around?

by eponymous coward on Aug 30, 2007 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I really wonder...
if White has something on McLaren, some Larry Craig kind of thing- to blackmail him into putting him out there?  Why else would any human being with a functioning brain put him in that 9th inning with a situation like that?

by LongBeachDave on Aug 30, 2007 8:48 PM PDT reply actions

Bring Back Bobby Ayala...
...those were the days!  8-3 lead gone in 10 pitches!
