LL Softball recap thread

YOU WRITE THE RECAP!!!

Basicly, the 1st game was won in the bottom of the 7th, and the 2nd game was a texas blowout we played two 7 inning games without a run limit (not a great idea). No Strikeouts, No walks, batting team provides catcher.

I was the pitcher on the home team after...
the change.

I had a great time, it was a ton of fun. And Mike and Chas, yall should have just walked into the bar instead of waiting outside. Nobody inside got carded.

I have to say, Graham was by far the finest left handed third baseman I've ever seen.

Man, i wish i could have stayed out in left field for the 2nd game. Thats when they finally started hitting them out there.

so you district, were the really tall guy who played cf, then moved to pitcher

That's me
Yeah they were killing the ball so badly we had to put on the Johnbai-shift haha.

It was good times, we definitely need to do it again before the winter comes.

Stupid left-handedness
It totally cost me the out on that Beltre-style barehanded play.

was that the play where i lunged
to safe the throw from taking out the other teams bench?

we were...
talking about the accent in the bar, and we decided that Graham has a British accent when at home and an American accent when he's at school.

Because, as we all know, girls like accents.

Nice games everyone!
I'm Bill, and I played 2B for the away team.

Got quite a few solid hits, but that pre-game Big Mac meal gave me the McStomache Ache everytime I sprinted....

Anyways, we should do it again sometime.

The crash at third was also my friend David
The lesson we should all take away from that is if you kick me in the face, your sprain your ankle.

One of my highlights
was the guy, who is left-handed, batting righty for a solid 8 minutes without making contact, and then switched it around and hit lefty and made contact on the second pitch!

And the rest of the day he made quick contact batting lefty!

that was kinda funny
notice how silent it got after 4 or 5 minutes. The guy didnt give up and didnt get frustrated. That was great.  Who was he?

Johnbai's bar suggestion was excellent
I hadn't been to the newly redubbed Kate's, but that's not a bad place to get food and drink while watching the Mariners/Seahawks.

Thanks Gomez
Sorry we didn't quite get everyone into the bar.  As it was a fine time... even if the Mariner's squandered a passable HoRam start.

Great game
I played third for the visiting team.

I kata'd a few plays, and had one 20-pitch AB where I just could not make contact, but it was still loads of fun. Defitely something that should happen again.

The bar was fun, too. It's always good to meet more people from here.

im pretty sure
there was more then 20 pitches, but you did a good job wearing out etown

I am softball's answer to Ho
I volunteered to pitch as everyone else was worried about exactly what I was worried about: being able to throw strikes.  I could not throw an underhanded strike to save my life, and though I recorded an out, MitD fortunately made the call to the bullpen and got someone more capable to lob balls and strikes.

Also, per MitD's suggestion to play to the strengths of my weak, flat swing and put it on the ground, I channeled Ichiro and slapped a couple of infield bleeders... but ran into a problem as I kept hitting the ball to the exact same spot, to where, on my last AB, the pitcher lunged to his right after his delivery, and snagged my line drive without taking another step for the out.  My joke is that my spray chart is probably one giant red blob to the pitcher's right.

i think the best came
when they changed out pitchers, and brought in johnbai to play slightly to the right of the pitcher, and good hit one right to him

That was a hilarious payoff
to my spray-chart punchline.

MitD gave good advice
And I followed it... a little too well.

I was even trying to spray the ball the other way, but still... right to the right of the mound.  Never failed.

Other things I observed
  • Katal was the guy with the 30 pitch at bat.  We didn't count walks or strikeouts, so you got as many swings and pitches as you needed to put the ball in play.  Katal, who was making alright contact before, got a little off on his swing timing, and he swung and missed at about 30 straight high pitches, changing bats and even turning around to bat lefty midway through to try and make contact.  He finally did, and he beat out a dribbler to get on base and pay off his lengthy AB.
  • I played 2B in the 1st game, and could've done worse.  I volunteered to play RF for the 2nd game, but man, I had a hard time with any balls hit my way.  I had Raul-like range and watched a lot of searing drives soar past me, and it took forever on that big soggy field to run them down and get them back in.
  • One notable drive I "fielded": one guy hits a liner right at me, which is great... except the ball then hangs a sudden right turn about a second before it gets to me, and flies past me for extra bases.  MitD told me THROW TO 3RD and I threw towards third something, though I don't think it was 3rd base.  LOL.
  • Another:  a looping liner comes down in front of me and I charge to get it in, except about 4 steps from it I plant my foot and my foot, instead of planting, slips out from under me and I land hard on my left hip, which felt like... landing hard on your left hip.  Though I had fallen, I did get up and throw the ball back in, though I have an understandable bruise that fortunately doesn't feel too bad.
  • I did get beat up a bit out there.  Fortunately, like a closer, I have a short memory about painful moments, so if anyone can remember the other instances where I hurt myself, let us know, because I sure can't remember.  I fortunately was able to play both games without taking a softball off the forehead.  PROGRESS!
  • Game 2 was a blowout.  I stopped counting after the other team batted around a 2nd time in that 2nd inning.  I just knew we were getting our asses kicked.
  • MitD's shift, where 2B came out and played as a 4th OF to try and cut off some of the long drives the other team was hitting, was a good idea, but those other guys were just tagging the ball, and on that slick turf, we couldn't catch up to those drives.
  • So, the play at 3rd.  Graham's playing 3B and his friend David was running hard into 3rd on a base hit.  The play at 3rd is close as both guys charge the bag and David slides hard into 3rd, but David's cleat hits Graham's face and, in the process, hurts his ankle.  Graham was okay.  David... not so much.  I'm just glad he didn't drive Graham out to the wilderness and kill him.

so while we wait for more peoples input
on the game.  would it be too much of a stretch to try and do another one of these before the season is out?

I say hells yes
I can't thank you enough for scrapping to put this together, chas.  This sort of meetup is pretty hard to plan, as unlike a regular game meetup where anyone can show up as-is, for a softball game you need a certain number of people, necessary equipment, a suitable space, a set time and place that everyone can agree to... people might think the planning was a bit much but really, to do a softball game, it was a good idea.

And this was a good idea, man.  It was totally worth it.  Thanks.

I thought it was a longshot to begin with, but wow did it turn out great. This was one of the funnest softball games i've ever played. You guys are great, and it was worth the drive for sure. My friend mike said he's willing to play again, as long as its before the 25th (he has to head back up the WWU).

Thanks for the fun guys

Game 1:  15-14, johnbai's team

Game 2:  (We lost count)-6, johnbai's team

did it matter?
game 2 was just ugly, but it was a ton of fun regardless of score.

Playing 1st reminded me of how much i hated playing 1st before.

by marinerschas2 on Aug 25, 2007 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

the better solution for game 2
rather then getting destroyed, we should have had a mercy rule in the 2nd inning, done some trades and tried that game again

I was so upset in the second game that
I brought the heat on baker and nailed him in his back foot.

He charged the mound but upon seeing my rather large stature he decided to head back to the plate and just hit a triple instead.

Forgot to concuss the catcher though
I guess with the catcher being on his team, it'd be a little counterproductive to do that though...

was that my 2nd at bat...
of 3 during that HUGE inning?  I think I had 3 hits during that inning.  Anyways, putting 21 man to the plate during that inning was Texas-esque!

I played LF for the away team
I had an awesome time with you guys, I'll try and join in again if there is another game.

As I saw, game 1: both teams' strategy: Single them to death. A couple Funk blasts on both sides. This was a very good game.

Game 2: It's been said already.

And after game 2, i don't know about you guys but I was flat-out exhausted from all the running the bases.

by Jaejo on Aug 25, 2007 10:04 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

JaeJo
was our defensive MVP... he took away all those big flies to LF!  Gave me a softball ERA to be proud of.

PS... regarding fixing the lineup.  Phildopip was batting after Johnbai in the lineup.

by johnbai on Aug 25, 2007 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seriously,
To make the rules for fair, we should've had no tags after a flyout (obviously no sac flys)...and after scoring 10 runs in the inning, automatically move to the next inning...seriously, the second game was approximately 27-6!
"You just got AJ-aculated on!"

by wwbaker3 on Aug 25, 2007 11:41 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I agree.
Not having the catcher on you're own team makes it pretty easy for the other team to get sac flies.

Man, I had a blast yesterday. I'm sore enough to really ask myself why I don't get out and exercise more.

The highlights I seem to remember:

  • The treacherous outfield: So many potholes and little mounds (that's what she said) made the ball almost impossible to field cleanly if you didn't just catch it out of the air. I had two balls hit the ground in front of me and make totally unpredictable bounces to get past me for extra bases.

  • There were about 3 or 4 mammoth homers. Mariner in the District got a hold of one really well that went over our centerfielder's head in the first inning of the first game. Then, two batters later, Etowncoug did the same thing. Then it was my team's turn. Johnbai hit one onto the other baseball diamond that rolled all the way to the backstop, then that guy Mike hit one even further in the air. Am I right to say that it might have been hit out of Safeco? That ball was just hammered.

  • JaeJo played flawless left field for us. That guy was rock solid out there.

  • I need to work on my softball swing a little more. I'm used to hitting a baseball, and not used to having to stay so far back on the softball and wait for it. It took me until the second game to really start hitting the ball. The first game was filled with a lot of easy pop-ups and weird cue shots of the end of the bat.

I reject your reality and substitute my own!
