Yesterday was the greatest day in the history of Mariner blogging. It's time to continue riding that high into the All Star Break by getting to a season-best 13 games over .500 and driving another nail into Oakland's coffin. Holding the hammer will be Ryan Feierabend, who's been blasted in two of his last three starts and should've been blasted in the other, but the A's can't really hit and play in a gigantic ballpark, so this outing shouldn't be as brief as the last.

Joe Blanton, by the way, seems to have made a leap. Career high in strikeouts, career high in grounders, career low in walks...he's not quite this guy, but he's an awful lot better than the irritating fatass he was a year ago.

Also by the way, in case you missed it, here are the details on the August USSM/LL get-togethers. I would've made a post of my own but I haven't had time here in Boston, so just read Dave's and follow his directions to sign up. We'll see you there.

Thinking back to yesterday's game
I find it interesting that the team planned on taking a lot of pitches against Harden, in order to get him out of the game early due to his pitch count.

Compare that to back in April, when we had a game against the Angels, and Colon was in a similar situation. We hacked away, and subsequently Bartolo lasted a long time against us. We lost that game.

Oakland
Baker on his blog says the word around Oakland is the A's will be sellers if they lose this series. I know everybody assumed this, but it's good to hear the team is thinking the same thing. Time to stick the knife in the A's for good this year. After all the pain they've inflicted on us over the years, I want revenge!

An SP is needed
but also a dominating force in the 8th inning to couple with Sherill would be a great get - if only Gagne/Otsuka weren't in our division!  As much as I would like to get a middle infielder to replace Yuni, now that the defense which has kept him at the majors is failing, I just do not see the front office making such a deal.  Getting rid of Yuni would also help with the whole infield pop-up frustrations but the likelihood of anything other than a starting pitcher or setup guy seems to be extremely low.

I like the idea of trading Guillen
for a good reliever, and then promoting both Jones (to LF, Raul to DH) and Wlad.

The only problem
with trading Guillen and promoting both Jones and Wlad is simple..  Do you really want two fresh from the farm rookies in the lineup when you are fighting with a number of very talented teams for a playoff spot?  I don't think Guillen will be shipped off anywhere simply because of the veteran-ness that he has.  One rookie in the lineup is fine as he can be brought along slower.  Two rookies in the starting lineup opens up the possibilities of a lot of mistakes that could potentially change the face of the playoff race.

I feel like Ichiro should be able to cover
for any defensive miscues. Neither of them can be worse than Raul, anyway.

As for their offense, I suppose I just feel like they're ready - they've been raking in AAA all season, and I'd like to see what they can do. Besides, if they get acclimated now, they should be more comfortable in September and (with fingers crossed) October.

mistakes like...?
fact is, getting Rual and Guillen out of the OF and replaced with average to above average defenders saves a lot of runs.

Considering that, all Wlad and Jones would have to do to make the trades a lateral move would be to hit around .1400 OPS combined.

Who anywhere thinks they can't do that?

They'll never trade Guillen while were winning
...unless he's part of a deal for Buehrle for some reason-- and even then, look what happened to the Dodgers when they made a ridiculously good deal for Brad Penny a few year back.

I dunno, I think it would be a good baseball move but it don't think it's right to do that to someone if they're playing well unless they are ok with leaving. It sends a terrible message to your players, and might have a negative impact on future FA signings.

Whenever we talk about the trade deadline we talk more about who the M's shouldn't give up than who the M's could get. The M's obviously could use another quality starter or reliever. Besides Buehrle who else?

there is nobody else that is worth trading for to shore up the rotation.  When you start getting desperate and trading for mid level guys, you get in trouble.  Timlin, Spoljaric, Slocumb - nuff said.

Yeah, to echo everbody else, it's Buehrle or no one. Morris, Willis, etc are not worth anything. But the addition of Buehrle to theis team would make us a legitimate threat for a World Series.

day game after a night game lineup - doesn't mean I agree AT ALL, especially with the ASB coming up but Johnny Mac stated before that he was going to give his starters more rest than Grover so it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise.  But ya, definitely would like to see our FB outfield out there with Ellison Ichiro and Guillen or WFB but oh well..

And we have the all-star break giving everyone a few days off...I think its a pretty ridiculous line for the importance of the game. (I know its still 'early' in the year, but this game is pretty vital for going into the break on a nice run and almost eliminating the A's from contention)

Bases loaded, Ibanez doubles.  The throw home gets away from Kendall and Blanton runs after it.  In the process, he pushes Ichiro from behind, who is in the proximity of the ball.  Ellison, who is standing near the situation, shoves Blanton, says "don't fuck with Ichiro", and puts up his fists.  The dugouts clear, with Felix and Batista making surprise appearances.  Blanton and Batista gets tossed, Ibanez goes back to third.  Guillen hits a single on the first pitch from the new pitcher, scoring Ibanez.

Jake Woods has 6Ks against 2BBs so far in July so maybe he just had an Anti-Meche June. Not that I'm really stumping for Woods. I thought he would be a decent guy to keep around since his SP periphs were solid, but nothing pertinent.

And he does seem superfluous now unless they bring him up into the rotation since we have Sherrill, EOF and RRS as lefties in the pen.

Maybe we can throw him into the miracle deal wherein we get rid of Guillen and/or Vidro.

Rotoworld's Anti-Mariner bias
On the play, the ball got past the catcher, and Ichiro Suzuki, who had scored, happened to be standing near where it landed. Blanton, backing up the play, shoved Ichiro rather harmlessly to get to the ball, and that's where it should have ended. However, Jason Ellison, who had also scored, decided to push Blanton, setting off the incident that led to both benches clearing. We understand Ellison getting feisty when he's only in the lineup once a month, but he should have minded his own business this time.

Just watch
Technically won the Super Bowl two years ago.

Followed it up by making the playoffs, winning a game, and pushing the Bears to the limit despite over 40 injuries on the roster...that doesnt even include guys playing through them (Jones, for example).

I think there is an argument that no team could of done that. Take Manning, Wayne, Harrison from the Colts...they surely wouldnt be around the SB, either.

Just my opinion. We're not the team the beat, but I still think if we stay healthy, we will go all the way.

This of course until the season starts, where ill be nervous during every game.
