Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Open Thread Of Apprehension

Might as well kill two birds with one stone. For one thing, the trade deadline's tomorrow at 1pm PDT, and the Mariners are currently calling everyone about everyone, with Wlad being the most desirable and available bartering chip. In my grossly underinformed opinion, odds are about 60% we do nothing, 25% we get a reliever, 10% we get a position player, and 5% we get a starter. And in the event that Bavasi does pull the trigger, odds are about 80% that we won't like what he did. And while we're speaking in terms of probability, odds are 100% that at least one person calls him the worst GM of all time, regardless of what he does or doesn't do before the deadline officially hits.

As for the second thing, we get this quote from John McLaren prior to tonight's game:

McLaren said before the game that he was "absolutely" going to stick with Ibanez and Richie Sexson down the stretch, despite their significant slumps at the plate.

"When you're a professional and you're not having a great year and you're still going out there and giving it your all, and not hanging your head and battling, that means something to your teammates, and that's important to me," McLaren said.

Raul Ibanez: .255/.307/.394, .511 OPS in July, horrible defense.
Richie Sexson: .204/.304/.404, .619 OPS in July, horrible defense.

When you're not having a great year, and you're still going out there every day and giving it your all, what that means to your teammates is that your all isn't good enough. I'm sure the clubhouse would respond more positively to winning than they do to fruitless effort, so it's high time that somebody cut through the chemistry bullshit and get Adam Jones and Ben Broussard into the lineup. Quit dicking around and make this team better. You'll be glad you did. I promise.

we have no chance of being a contender
with these kinds of philosophies clouding the minds of the people who run the team. Richie needs a kick in the ass to wake him up, and what would do that more than taking away some of his playing time? I know that I'm preaching to the choir, but consider it more venting. Raul is self explanatory, I don't think he needs to be DFA'd, but he cant be out on the field ever, or batting against a lefty. Why is it so hard for the decision makers to do their job and give this team, and us - the fans who live and die with them, and spend all of our money on them - the best opportunity to win as many games as possible, especially when we are in a fucking god damn playoff race... shit

I just hope that we don't make a shitty trade, or any trade really, and that the management wakes up, does their morning ritual, and goes to work on making this the team that it should be.

Pathetic
"When you're a professional and you're not having a great year and you're still going out there and giving it your all, and not hanging your head and battling, that means something to your teammates, and that's important to me"

Never has a team so needed Billy Martin.

I'm probably more sympathic to McLaren's attitude
than most. Most here mock the idea of chemistry and such, but I don't think it's unreasonable to want to give veterans a chance to come up big when the team needs them.

BUT here's the two things that really trouble me:

  1. In the last two weeks--a very crucial time for this team and a time when their jobs may have been rumored to be in jepordy--Richie and Raul haven't turned it on. Unlike Vidro, who is hitting for a bit more power and getting key hits, our left fielder and first basement don't seem motivated by their team needs or their jobs.
  2. McLaren is sending a admirable, movie worthy message about sticking with guys and believing in them--but what about the message he's sending to Adam Jones? Or Ben Broussard? Essentially: you can do everything that a team can ask of you in AAA and big situations and still not get the chance on the team you deserve.
So I can see some benefit to McLaren's stance, here, but frankly, I think he also needs to draw a line, and he needs to give the guys that perform a chance to prove they can sustain it. Compromise can be a wonderful thing.

Taking only Sexson for the time being
He's got another big-money season next year before his contract is due. It has to be in the Mariners' interest to try to get him through this drought in order to realise some value for him, else he's a $13m (or however much it is) millstone around our necks for another 15 months. If he performs then we have either a good 1B or potential trade fodder. If he doesn't we have a huge lump in the salary bill and nothing to show for it.

Given that, you must surely sympathise with the back office wanting to do everything they can to get him back on the rails.

Sunk costs
The M's pay for Sexson regardless of if he's good or bad. In a pennant race, the team HAS to do what it takes to win games, not try and justify poor contracts.

And....in fact
they are winning games.

Granted, it may not be the best team they could ultimately put out there, but why mess with something that won't necessarily work.

In the long run, next year, things might be better, but honestly I don't think Adam Jones will make the team win this year.  Yes, he is good and yes, he will be good.  This year, in trying to make the playoffs, will be too much pressure on him.  If he were moved up, it would seem like he is the one needed to get it done.  Honestly, I think he would fail and flail with that chance.

The same thing happened last year when they tried to make him the CF of the future.  He didn't cut it.  Yes, he has gotten better, and still could be the LF or RF of the future (since they have the CF locked up now).  However, due to all the writings and everything else around, it will not be for Adam Jones to be the future but the right now.  I just don't think he is ready to be the right now.

Just my two cents....

by ppl4life on Jul 31, 2007 8:03 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes,
they ARE winnings games, but is it because of Richie/Raul? Could they be winning MORE games if they had a 1B/LF who could actually hit?

The Yankees are on a hot streak too, does this mean they shouldn't bring up Phil Hughes because they shouldn't "mess with something that won't necessarily work?"

Adam Jones would be an upgrade over Raul in every way possible.

You started your post with "Granted, it may not be the best team they could ultimately put out there......" and that says it all. It SHOULD be the best team they can put out there, that's the point.

In sports, results matter
To a GM, results matter far more than how those results are attained.

GM's of teams that are performing well, like the M's are right now, don't sit there and think "well, we COULD be doing a lot better, if we just did this".  All they're thinking is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", and, on aggregate, the M's ain't broke.

There are individual parts that are broken, yes, and I wish they'd get fixed too, but I can see why nothing's happening in that regard.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Jul 31, 2007 8:45 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I dunno...
I think the better GMs ARE thinking, "We COULD be doing better....how can we do that?"

That's thinking agressively. That's taking the initiative, forcing others to react to you.

Taking advantage of every edge you can is the sign of a winner. I don't think "It's not broke, don't fix it" is the sign of a winner's mentality. It's certainly not in business, and I truly doubt it is in sports.

by rtang on Jul 31, 2007 8:50 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The 2006 Cardinals say hello
Believe me, I'm on the side of the aggressive thinkers here - I just don't think that a lot of GM's are on that same page.  GM's like Beane, Epstein, etc,. do think like that, sure, but other GM's see that you can count the WS rings on Beane and Epstein's hands on one finger, and probably decide to stick with what they know.

Again, I'm not defending it - I wish it would change too - but I understand it.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

The Sexson-Broussard
switch doesn't make as much sense to me as the not making the Raul/Jones switch.

Broussard is a veteran that's been in the majors for a while and has shown he can swing the bat, giving him more PT doesn't hurt anything, sitting Sexson a little more doesn't hurt and might even motivate him a little.

The Ibanez/Jones swap I can understand why that isn't happening.  The prevailing thought is that Jones doesn't need to hit to make this team better, just his defense alone, that's only something that we fans think of, not players and management, defense is secondary to offense... and rookies have a tendency to come up and if they don't start on a hot streak get overwhelmed by frustration because they're trying to impress in order to stay up with the big club.  Add in the pressure of replacing a noted clubhouse favorite in Ibanez, and the high expectations placed upon Jones by the fanbase, and then the pressure of the the pennant race.  It would be a tough thing for Jones if he didn't hit once he came up.

by MfaninAlaska on Jul 31, 2007 9:17 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The problem is....
The results the team is getting aren't good enough. The Mariners haven't been in a playoff position since when, April 3rd? At the end of the year, the difference between 1 game out of the hunt and 30 games out is a few fans, but that's about it.

If the team is in first, sure, hold on to what you've got as long as you can, but at this pace, finishing 5-6 games out of the race isn't good enough. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Fine with me, but this team IS broken.

By essentially punting every 5th game (when it's on the road especially), punting LF defense (in order to get a crappy hitter into the middle of the lineup, no less), playing an inferior offensive and defensive 1B 90% of the time....this team is handing its opponents advantages that it can't afford to give up.

Of the 5 teams in the race for 3 playoff spots, none are perfect, but the Mariners have the most obvious holes. And the worst part is, those are holes that should be pretty easily filled (mostly from within). By making a few incredibly obvious moves, this team tightens up the talent gap with the other 4 teams.

You're right, results matter most, but right now, the results aren't good enough, so why is the team insisting on sticking with what's not working?

Managers say things for effect
I haven't followed Mc's history and don't know if he has a reputation for coming out with gentle quotes to mollycoddle his players, but in all walks of life and especially in sports we know that managers tend to say one thnig in public and act differently behind closed doors. I tend to prefer to judge by actions rather than words.

The material action in this case is making changes to the (active) roster for position players, and we remain the only side of 30 still to make any such changes, in spite of certain poor performers.

What, of course, we don't know is what Mc is saying to Sexson and Raul in private. For all we know he might be saying the same things, else he may be a lot harsher. There isn't, though, any public threat any perhaps that's just his way. Maybe he's a more clinical decision maker who wants to give players every last chance before committing because, as much as anything, he doesn't wish to do an about-face if Broussard or Jones (in this example) don't cut the mustard once given a regular start at 1B/LF.

As much as anything, Mc is also still finding his feet in a first managerial role at this level and he also needs the right amount of time to judge such decisions and isn't likely to rush them.

The right decisions pay the bills, but at the same time they also determine the success of a season. The fact that McLaren has highlighted these two players does, at least signal the fact that he recognises their struggles and it's not like he's putting out propaganda insisting that they're doing well on the field when they patently are not.

I'd rather judge him by the decisions he makes rather than the lack of them at such an early stage in his managerial career.

Mac says he has a lot of Lou in him.
And there's one way I wish he'd show it.  When a player is struggling for Lou, he will tell the media something along the lines of "We can't have a left-fielder who can't catch or hit the ball anymore!  If we could get someone who can hit the damn ball maybe we'd win a few ballgames!"  This not only lights a fire under the player's ass so they may improve, but it also opens the door to the new player.  Coddling your players just doesn't help.

by BrettJMiller on Jul 31, 2007 7:20 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Successful managers
aren't all of one breed. What works for some isn't considered good practise by others.

The decision (or lack of one) to change about the roster for said players will be best judged in retrospect and for now all we can do is speculate. What happens in the next two months remains and open path.

McLaren might stick with Richie/Raul and they both flunk

McLaren might stick with Richie/Raul and either/both of them come good

McLaren might make changes to one, both or more positions that negatively or positively adjust the performance of the team for the remaining time.

"Coddling your players just doesn't help."

I'm sure that most people managers (in all walks) would disagree with that - in some cases it does work and who are we to judge unless we know these people well enough? Personally I'm not a big fan of lambasting your own team in public. If Pinella did it then bully for him, but what works for some isn't necessarily best practise, is it?

I hate Mac. I'm sorry, I hate him. The team gives us hope and he's going to ruin it by keeping two horrible players out there everyday? Bavasi needs to overrule him, bring up Adam Jones and tell Mac he either puts him in LF everyday or he's fired.

I prefer this McLaren comment....
"If there's a definite upgrade, and we're all saying it's the best thing to do, we'll do it," McLaren said. "But mortgaging the franchise, I'm dead against it. There's some guys down there (in the minors) that we think a lot of, and I don't think a rent-a-player is a good idea. That's my feeling, and I think we're all aboard on this thing. We're not going to give up an Adam Jones for a rent-a-player."

About the Clement for Al Reyes rumor...
It's actually pretty hilarious when you think about it in terms of scarcity of talent. Basically, Bavasi is hoping to acquire the single most common commodity in baseball (the right handed reliever) in exchange for what might be the most rare commodity (the left handed catcher who can actually hit).

Did I say hilarious? I meant hilariously tragic.

by Slozbury Stouvre on Jul 31, 2007 9:22 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Here's the always good Larry Stone's take
"The Rays are looking for catching help and are likely to push hard for former No. 1 pick Jeff Clement, who, like Adam Jones, is deemed close to untouchable by the Mariners. If the Rays don't move off Clement, the deal is likely to die."

by G_ on Jul 31, 2007 9:27 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This is one rumor
that I am not sure is being totally reported..  Clement for Reyes straight up seems a bit much - even for Bavasi.  Just sounds to me like there is something more there...

by seattlesundevil on Jul 31, 2007 9:27 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Pena
The rumor that Pena might be included has surfaced occasionally.  Why would we NEED that, though, when we could slide Broussard into 1B?  Or Clement, for that matter...
World Series or bust!!!

by KingCorran on Jul 31, 2007 9:41 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Could also be downgraded to Rob Johnson
That seems to be a bit more likely if it is indeed just a straight up trade.  They are DESPERATE for catching help..  I am still holding out hope for Pena and Reyes for Clement :-)  although I have a feeling I will be holding out hope for that well past 1 pm today

by seattlesundevil on Jul 31, 2007 9:28 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I do that.
I don't know how that works in reality. I think Reyes would be a great addition, but he's certainly not worth a top prospect-- but as much as our rotation can suck, it'd be nice to have wicked awesome bullpen.

by tait644 on Jul 31, 2007 9:44 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

basically
anything that brings us pena, i'm a big fan of.  pena i think could be a huge improvement for this club.  his lefty power is obvious, as well as his patience, but his glove at first base is extremely impressive to the naked eye (i haven't seen any metrics on his defensive prowess, so i won't SWEAR to it, sometimes these things are misleading).

i think pena upgrades us in two capacities, much as adam jones in left would do, too.

CF-Ichiro
DH-Vidro / Ibanez / Sexson / Broussard (Obviously not all of them in the 2 hole)
1B-Pena
3B-Beltre
RF-Guillen
LF-Jones
C-Johjima
2B-Lopez
SS-Betancourt

Thats quite the 1-7...

Pena
Guillen
Johjima
Ibanez (DH)
Jones
Lopez
Betancourt

vs. Lefties:

Ichiro
Vidro
Beltre

Sexson
Jones

Sticking with Ibanez and Sexson
Honestly, I don't care.  I really don't.  I knew they were going to stick around till the end anyway.

What annoyed me to no end was that they insisted on batting Raul 3rd in the lineup, no matter what.

If you're going to run black holes in the lineup position said black hole where it does the least amount of damage...down in the order, and in one spot.  It took seven straight losses to figure this out and now we've one four straight since changing the lineup for the better.

Ultimately, I always knew that things were going to come down to how Raul and Richie perfomed while we contend for the playoffs.

I'd take Morris if it meant Sexson gone cause that would force Broussard to play more and probably Jones into everyday LF.

Sexson for Morris straight up?
I'd do it. More ABs for Broussard, but I'm still convinced Sexson has a nice hot streak in him before the end of the year. Morris is not a good pitcher, but neither is HoRam. He's a groundball contact pitcher who doesn't walk a lot of guys and doesn't give up too many HR. It'd be worth it just to be rid of Sexson's contract.

I don't know if any of you read
Geoff Baker's Seattle Times Blog, but in it he says the Mariners HAVE to trade Clement for Reyes, as that is what market value is (as said by the devil rays) and that the 2 monthes we get out of reyes will make us a playoff team. Also if we DONT make the move, he says we are a team that covets our prospects too much... SINCE WHEN do we keep good prospects? I'm so frustrated by the utter stupidity of Seattle Sports heads (I'm looking at you KJR)
Too close for missles, switching to guns.

by Paseman on Jul 31, 2007 11:44 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Baker has lost all my respect
He has absolutely no concept of prospect value and has no idea of how extremely mediocre Reyes is. Gagne for Clement? I'd consider the hell out of that. Reyes for Clement? That's embarassing.

by Trent on Jul 31, 2007 11:46 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He also says
That Reyes is a "veteran" with late innning "experience". If Bill Bavasi sees that we're toast

Probably the wrong term to use
How about Baker has gone from being a decent reporter to a fucking tool?

by Trent on Jul 31, 2007 11:55 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Baker has his belief systems
Some of them agree with people and some of them don't.  It's like slumps and hot streaks.  For a long while, we've heard a lot from him that we agree with.  Now, as the trade deadline aproaches, we're hearing his stance on trades and prospects, which happens to not agree with everybody.

Baker didn't really change.  He just didn't say anything you strongly disagreed with until recently.

by Gomez on Jul 31, 2007 12:07 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

How can you really defend
a Beat guy who is with the team all the time and still says what we need most is a righty reliever at the expense of one of our top 5 prospects? I wouldn't say I've lost respect for him but I would say I have lost respect for what he says, and will take it with a grain of salt
Too close for missles, switching to guns.

by Paseman on Jul 31, 2007 11:55 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I am not sure that Reyes
being called extremely mediocre is correct.  He isn't JJ but he isn't Matt Herges either.  Since everyone loves WPA here - Al Reyes' combined WPA this year according to fangraphs is 1.97 (.01 below Scot Shields and above Gagne, Valverde, Lidge, Rivera...) His ERA looks terrible but he does hold batters to a .200 BAA, a WHIP just above 1, a 3:1 K:BB ratio.  He may not be a dominant finisher a la Putz, but he is far from extremely mediocre

by seattlesundevil on Jul 31, 2007 11:53 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Reyes is damn fine.
But we already have damn fine.

by Jeff on Jul 31, 2007 11:54 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Exactly,
I am not saying getting Reyes isn't completely redundant - just that he is better than a lot of people are giving him credit for.

by seattlesundevil on Jul 31, 2007 11:55 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Reyes is damned fine?
Because he has pitched well this year, when hes 37? look at his history, he's been a journeyman who just this year finally became a closer, if only because TB had nothing else to throw there. He pumps out some good innings and now TB can turn him for a top prospect? Maybe I just don't "get" baseball stuff like all those GM's
Too close for missles, switching to guns.

by Paseman on Jul 31, 2007 11:58 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He's a good reliever.
Throws strikes, misses bats, the usual stuff. Extreme flyball guy, but that'd work out okay in Safeco.

The problem is that good relievers are almost never worth trading for.

by Jeff on Jul 31, 2007 12:01 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Baker's not perfect
But let's give him some props for his blog. A lot of the stuff he says is good, he has pretty good insight into the clubhouse and has been on the Bavasi is screwing this up bandwagon. Is he wrong about this deal? Hells yeah. He doesn't value Sherill enough and doesn't understand the value of prospects. But he's been right more than he's been wrong.

by phil333 on Jul 31, 2007 11:54 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Baker >>> Finnigan
By such a wide margin it's not even funny. I grossly overreacted above, but, I'm not a happy trade deadline person. it's the most annoying time of the year for baseball fans and it's tough not to click refresh every 15 minutes to see some more ridiculous rumors.

Baker is a good reporter. His idea of value is skewed in my eyes.

And yes, Reyes is a decent reliever. But like Jeff said above, we have a lot of those already.

by Trent on Jul 31, 2007 12:03 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I hate
when he keeps saying that contending teams don't break in rookies midseason.

The Brewers have a rookie in the 3 spot of the lineup and a rookie is currently their ace. The Yankees called up Hughes, possibly before he was ready. Oakland has been running out AAA guys all year and done very well despite the injuries. The Red Sox with Gabbard and Lester... the list goes on and on.

by sammy on Jul 31, 2007 12:01 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Soriano is better than Dotel, and around for longer, while Davies is better than that sorry Hobag.

by Jeff on Jul 31, 2007 12:02 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Actually
I think this works for both teams, even if the Braves came out ahead.  KC has absolutely nobody useful in the back end or even the middle of their rotation, so getting a young arm like Davies is an upgrade for a rotation that consists of Gil Meche and... uh.... Brian... Bannister....?  Jorge De... La Rosa....?  Davies isn't anything special, but he is WAY better than any of KC's back-end SP alternatives right now.

Meanwhile, the Royals have no real use for Dotel.  Might as well swap him for someone they have use for.

how is that fun?
we're almost to the point of being able to have a poll on the most illogical stances you've ever made.

Drinking --> killing pedestrians
Trade deadline --> example of east coast bias
John Olerud --> proof that all players get better after leaving the Mariners

which to choose?!

by Matthew on Jul 31, 2007 6:20 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

shouldn't we just freeze the rotation?
otherwise we'll gain time while the east coast loses it.

by Matthew on Jul 31, 2007 6:21 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

west coast GMs could also
make trades at midnight pac time, which is 3am east time.

ok, nevermind
I screwed it up again. It's hard to follow the threading so far.
