On the Throwbacks

A badass in any era.

Star-divide

I think this was the first time the Mariners have worn Mariners throwbacks.  Not the first time they've worn throwbacks, period; they've run out as the Seattle Rainiers at least twice, and by cosmic providence I was in attendance both times.  The first was a game at the Kingdome against the "Oakland Oaks".  The M's sported red Rainiers home unis, and the coolest thing I remember about that day was that Griffey Jr. and Rickey Henderson shared the same glove throughout the game.  Rickey left it on the rug for Junior between innings, and vice versa.  The second time was in San Diego two years ago, when the M's wore Rainiers 1938 road jerseys against the Padres in their 1936 PCL gear.  Hargrove hated them but they were easily the coolest throwbacks a Seattle team has ever worn.

The first thought I had today was, "Those don't look quite right."  Not just the belts, instead of the elastic striped waistband in the original gear, the blue just looked too... BLUE.  Then I realized: they've never worn this gear outside!  Literally.  We never saw the sun hit these unis, only the lights in the dome, so they looked too new and vibrant, and kind of contrived, like they were right off the shelf from the pro shop. It's frustrating that Ebbetts Field Flannels, literally walking distance from the ballpark, doesn't get the nod for these things. God forbid the local team would support a local company, but Majestic has the big MLB contract so wtf.  Aside from the belts (out of consideration for the players' comfort, I guess) M's management did a decent job with the theme.  They made batting helmets with the trident logo.  The on-deck circle was the trident logo on a blue background.  The logo on the hand-operated scoreboard in left was a too-skinny trident on a green background, which made it look like an M in A's colors.  Even that dumb moose wore the old uni, apropos of nothing.

Ballgame prepares to pull Sexson off the bag to set up Brouss's heroics.

And they did all the predictable stupid crap - disco on the PA, afros and glasses photoshopped on players photos, and worst of all, Poncherelli on a cop bike jacking up the warning track and throwing the first pitch.  Diego Segui is still waiting for his plane ticket.

You cheap motherfuckers...

The A's looked f-ing great. Like they had stepped out of a time machine (except for the belts), right down to the Charlie Finley white-and-green ballcaps the coaches wore.  Pretty cool.  They were also nice enough to pitch and play defense like the '77 A's what finished last in the division behind the expansion M's, and who apparently considered a 162nd game pointless.

The fuck I got left...

Adjust throwback sleeve, collect 1,500th hit, pretend I still don't speak English.  Hai!

Konichiwa, bitches.

Failure to wear even fake stirrups on retro day warrants ejection.

You hang 'em, Brouss bangs 'em.

You in row 10!  How you like me now!!

Don't trade him, Bill, you punkass.

Putz in, throwbacks shelved.

Not a chance
these are by far the best throwbacks the M's have worn.  I would be more than happy if they went back to these jerseys full time.

Ditto.
Wow, I badly badly badly want to buy one of these jerseys.  I loved seeing the team in them, in full sun.  It was BEAUTIFUL!!!

Even apart from the game itself
those unis made me giggle like a schoolgirl the whole game - it was like my entire childhood flashed before my eyes, in bright sunlight.  Those were some awesome throwback unis.

Yes
These unis looked incredible and I'd love the team to pull a 1995 49ers and just wear their throwbacks the rest of the year at home games.

I think you mean 1994.
I reject your reality and substitute my own!

Now's your chance...
For a mere starting bid of $400 (WTF is Guillen's $300???), you can own one beautiful piece of history...

I kinda want Ben's
(Well, or Beltre's, but outbidding Red'd be problematic)

I hate being a grownup!
I just put a down payment down on a house Friday.  I have no liquid cash.

DIDN'T THE MORTGAGE PEOPLE KNOW I STILL HAD TOYS TO BUY????  DAMMIT!!!!

Me, too, me, too!
I just slapped down some of those same liquid assets on a new-to-me camera.  My other one sorta still works, but after shooting a wedding with it three weeks ago, and spending the subsequent 3 weeks touching up pictures, I escalated the "Buy new camera" on the list of things to do...

Congrats on the house!  You got the wife, you got the house, now you just need to be a REAL grownup and have a kid or two.  You'll be amazed what it does for your soul (both good and bad, heh).

So, yeah, I won't be bidding on the GS52 jersey if it shows up on the auction site...

:-(

Nice!
I was able to get a D200 and a 18-200 VR through my job recently.

Absolutely destroys the D80 in terms of raw cameraness and power.

Nice combo!
Those two (D200 + 18-200 VR) were made for each other.  Nice setup!

Yeah, the D80 is arguably an upgrade to the D70 which is a hugely underrated camera itself, but it's not a D200.

I actually wanted fewer megapixels.  My hard drive already has to be cleaned off.  Ideally, they'd've put a 6 MP sensor in the D2H, but I was doing just fine w/2.7 MP.  The upgrade to 4.1 will be fine for me.

Anyway, this is a baseball blog.  I've got a few pix up on my photo blog comparing the D1H and the D2H. I'm glad to have Color Mode III finally, as the conversion for my D1H pix in Capture isn't quite the same, as I show in the pictures...

Rest of that setup...
Is a SB-800 on a bracket, hehe. Got that on a Prom budget.

Back to baseball, but I'll slip over to your photoblog instead. :D

Gonna skip that step
now you just need to be a REAL grownup and have a kid or two.

I love kids - my nephews are the greatest kids on the planet - but I don't want any of my own, nor does my wife.  I fully understand all the sacrifices that having a child requires one to make, and I'm not actually willing to make them.

So, I'll dote on my nephews, and if I ever get the chance to meet the li'l Positives I'll probably spoil them rotten as well, but then when I'm done with that I'll go home and crack open a few beers then sleep till noon the next day.  hahahaha.

Ha Ha Ha Ha...
Yeah, kids certainly aren't for everyone.  But I wouldn't trade mine for the world.

They're always giving low scores.

I guess Broussard's was put in a glass case or something.

Guillen's is Jersey-Only
So, less Money, but the whole set would be more expensive. They probably didn't include the pants and hat because of blood stains

by tootthekazoo on Jul 30, 2007 12:28 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd love it...
If they sort of remixed the jersey (make it standard button down, keep sleeve piping, etc.) and made it the 3rd alternate backup 'for when pitcher is in slump or something and wants a shake up for karma' jersey or whatever to replace those ugly ass BP jerseys they used a few nights ago. Even keep the cap.

I remember
back when he was with the Nats, when Esteban Loaiza asked to wear the red DC unis at home for a start because of this.

I'd approve of the usage of the throwbacks for mojo powers.

I'd just like to add
that Ebbett's Field Flannels is awesome. I haven't been able to buy anything from there yet, but the stuff they offer is really cool.

That was a truly unpleasant day.
Most of the uniforms that weren't as bad as the M's ended up looking like this.
