Since it's 2:15 and I don't have anything to say and I'm only posting this because I know I won't be awake until seconds before the first pitch, I'll just use this space to copy and paste a little Mariner content from The Brushback (full article linked).

Mariners Bring Hargrove Back After Ichiro Signs Extension

SEATTLE--The Seattle Mariners announced Monday that former manager Mike Hargrove will return to the bench and take the reigns for the rest of the 2007 season and beyond. The announcement startled rightfielder Ichiro, who recently signed a five-year extension after learning that Hargrove, with whom he often had a contentious relationship, had resigned.

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

"Anyway, I hope Ichiro can set aside his differences with Mike and just concentrate on getting hits. He could also concentrate on the fact that he's make $90 million. Hell, I would play for Hitler for $90 million. Actually I would play for Hitler for free, because I'm a huge World War II buff."

Not picking on you, but nothing is funnier then someone whigging out because of something said in a brushback or onion article because they think it's real. My favorite was when the onion did an article on Hank Aaron being awarded 50 "lost" homeruns and some Giants fan on another site freaked out. His reaction was so funny I don't think anyone bothered to tell him it was fake for awhile

PITCHERS SHOULD NOT HAVE SINGLE DIGIT NUMBERS.

by Slozbury Stouvre on Jul 21, 2007 8:48 AM PDT reply actions

Just curious..
why is that? is it some unwritten rule?

by areacode206 on Jul 21, 2007 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes, it's extremely rare for an MLB
pitcher to wear a single digit number. This article has some good info on the reasons.

Towers doesn't actually bother me, I just think it's funny.

Believe it or not, ESPN gives the M's
a back handed compliment.

From their website's baseball power rankings:

"Winning breeds confidence, and confidence breeds winning. The Mariners have the look of a serious contender."

Thanks, ESPN. I'm glad that you've noticed that a 54-39 team has "the look of a serious contender."

If we're going to do something with Richie

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 21, 2007 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions

I have more
confidence in Raul being productive down the stretch then Broussard..... I know Raul is struggling right now, but until July he was still pretty productive without the long ball being part of his game..

by MfaninAlaska on Jul 21, 2007 10:58 AM PDT up reply actions

If Raul is battling some injury
he really needs to be DL'd. If he's not, then I'm just not buying a revitalization - he looks about ten years older than he did last season.

What it comes down to is we can't really afford to have him doing this in the middle of the lineup with the team in the hunt. Sit him for a little while and let him prove himself in spot starts and batting practice before entrusting him with an everyday job again.

by MfaninAlaska on Jul 21, 2007 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions

He's not a savior
but he's the easiest solution to the most obvious problem. You can't fix everything at once, but neglecting to fix one glaring issue because he doesn't solve everything is ignorant and irresponsible.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 21, 2007 12:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I understand that...
and concur... .

but how exactly is this game proof positive that he needs to be here?  That's the same thing as saying that if he'd been here, the M's would have won.   That's just total homerism for Jones, who despite all his talents has his own flaws.

I have no problem bringing him up and kicking a useless Ellison to the curb and giving Jones as much playing time as possible, unless he struggles mightily when he comes up.

But putting expectations on him, that he's going to come up and make a night and day difference to what we have.....

well I can't wait till he struggles in important situations in close games to hear what you guys say about him....

by MfaninAlaska on Jul 21, 2007 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, I dunno how this game is proof positive.
That I don't necessarily agree with. I think it's more like the entire last month has been evidence enough.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 21, 2007 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the month of July
has been the only proof positive that Jones needs to be in for Raul... but is that because Raul is done... or is it because he's in a slump?

Before the all-star break Raul: .275 .324 .426 .750

Since the all-star break:
148 .200 .185 .385

he's in a slump that is for sure.... but while he wasn't an all-star in the first half, he was still quite productive, and frankly more productive offensively then I think Jones will be when he does come up... I don't think Jones is going to be that productive until next year, when he is able to adjust to the better quality pitching.

by MfaninAlaska on Jul 21, 2007 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions

It's all that one game, though.
Outside of that frighteningly awesome game in Cleveland, Raul's first half batting line was .266/.316/.388. Save for one time period of three hours and five at bats, he's been awful all season long.

Jones can match that, and I have every confidence that he'll blow Raul's defense out of the water, too. He's an upgrade. If Raul wants to earn a spot in the lineup, he ought to have to prove it in practice or pinch-hit opportunities.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 21, 2007 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions

ok
but Raul is not the biggest problem with this team.... yeah you can upgrade his position defensively... I'm not convinced Jones will be an offensive upgrade at this point in his career....

but you are just taking a step sideways in that, and making your team even more right handed then it currently is, while playing in a park that favors left handed hitters.... so you're dumping one of the 3 starters that hits for an .800 ops against right handed pitchers, in favor of another right handed hitter.

again, I'm not saying Raul isn't struggling, and I'm not saying Jones isn't better defensively.  I'm saying.. if this team wants to make the playoffs... Jones replacing Raul full time ain't going to help the offense, but it will help the defense.

by MfaninAlaska on Jul 21, 2007 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I actually think he *is* the biggest problem.
Again, outside of that crazy game against Cleveland, Raul's batted .252/.303/.366 on the season - the worst line on the team. He's matched that with simultaneously terrible defense. Jones will blow his fielding away, and I think the odds are very good that he tops Raul's offensive production as well (even if only by a little). There's a slim chance that he just blows up and can't hit Major League pitching at all, but then Raul isn't hitting it either, and Jones' defensive edge means there's pretty much no way at all that the team is worse off after making the move.

Yeah, Raul's left-handed, and that's good for Safeco. But at some point the handedness advantage goes away when the talent difference is so wide.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 21, 2007 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions

This is where I disagree.
while yes Raul's overall numbers are bad... its his numbers vs. left handed pitchers that is demolishing his overall value....

The majority of the team's at-bats are vs. right handed pitching.

822 AB's vs. LHP
2419 AB's vs. RHP

Guillen -
.242 .310 .373 .683 vs. RHP
.415 .500 .683 1.183 vs. LHP

Johjima -
.251 .289 .384 .672 vs. RHP
.375 .420 .656 1.077 vs. LHP

Betancourt -
.272 .295 .350 .645 vs. RHP
.316 .354 .474 .827 VS. LHP

Raul
.278 .342 .463 .805 vs. RHP
.235 .248 .284 .532 vs. LHP

If you are going to make a change with another rhb vs. rhp and have it positively affect the club, then Guillen should be replaced vs. RHP by Jones, and Ibanez only vs. LHP.

At the same time, Johjima is hurting the club big time in the majority of his at bats, Clement would be a massive improvement over Joh especially since he is a left handed bat.

And Betancourt vs. RHP is pretty horrible as well.

You can look at the overall numbers and say one thing, but when you break it down, Guillen is having a much more negative impact on the offense then Ibanez is based on the breakdown's of RHP vs. LHP.   Guillen is flukishly effective right now against LHP and downright horrible the majority of the time.

All of those players have almost twice as many at-bats vs. RHP as they do vs. LHP.

To make things most effective for the team offensively, you'd want Jones replacing Guillen vs. RHP and replacing Raul vs. LHP.

by MfaninAlaska on Jul 21, 2007 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm gonna keep going back to this though
that one awesome game for Raul was against all righties. His split's at .262/.328/.407 for the rest of the year, and while that's still better than Guillen, I think it's far more indicative of what he's capable of right now than his overall line, which is driven up by one admittedly fantastic effort (one that, if you remember, convinced me that Raul was actually fine).

Ideally, I do agree with you that the best solution would be a three-man rotation between Jones, Ibanez, and Guillen. But I think the team has demonstrated that it has no grasp of platoon splits at all, so with that in mind, we stand to gain the most by replacing Ibanez than by replacing anyone else. It's one of those theory vs. reality things where we wish the reality was a little better optimized.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 21, 2007 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

well
if you toss out that one great game, then do you toss out a great game vs. rhp for Guillen to?

I know Raul is not a fan favorite, he's one of those quiet guys that doesn't cause trouble, doesn't hit for a ton of power, and doesn't posses a cannon arm.  Basically he's vanilla when everyone wants strawberry.

That however doesn't really mean he's a bad player, just not the favorite like someone like Guillen.  Which, other then obliterating lhp, I don't understand why so many are going crazy over him.  Majority of the time he's a detriment offensively.  I have more confidence in Raul getting better in the second half vs. RHP then I do of Guillen getting better vs. them.

by MfaninAlaska on Jul 21, 2007 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Guillen's only a fan favorite here
because we like making fun of his attitude problems. It's not really a performance thing, as I think 95% of the people here acknowledge that he's essentially a league-average corner outfielder.

Raul is a bad player. He doesn't get on base, he doesn't hit for power, and he doesn't play defense. He's not a complete black hole against right-handed pitchers, but that's his only plus, and it's barely even significant. I really want to believe that he can recover some of his 2006 before it's too late, but at this point I just don't see any sign of that happening. Maybe after he gets a break to rest his aching body, but even then you're talking about replacing him for at least a few weeks.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 21, 2007 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Historically Guillen has hit RHP
as well as he hits LHP. I think people are overreacting to his platoon splits.

by JI on Jul 21, 2007 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I dunno
this game could have been a LOT different had Jones been in left instead of Raul - Jones has an arm that is WORLDS better than Rauls and quite possibly could have made the throw home to nail the runner that scored TORs only run.  Also he may not have been as clueless as Ra_l was leading off the ninth inning.  It is much easier to score when you don't have an automatic out to start a crucial inning.  Just my two cents..

by seattlesundevil on Jul 21, 2007 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree...
Really good teams look for every advantage to exploit, and do so.

Besides, if not having to play the field makes Rauuuul's body feel better, maybe he'll hit better.   AJ is already better than Vidro, so its two offensive upgrades and one defensive one.  Granted it doesn't fix everything, but it is an upgrade.

Still not making fun of Willie.

by carcinogen on Jul 21, 2007 12:27 PM PDT up reply actions

No he won't be Superman
but if Raul makes a better throw, maybe they catch Wells. Or maybe Jones doesn't fly-out in a key situation.

Every loss means the Mariners are a little less likely to use the excuse, "this team is winning, we don't want to change anything"

by jtopps on Jul 21, 2007 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions

It's been painfully clear for awhile
Since Raul can't hit, or field anymore.  And hasn't been able to for a long time.  Also, since they keep replaying Wells making the catch of Raul's liner, it's as if they're trying to say "Hey!  He hit it hard!  He's still good!"

No, Jones probably won't come up until Raul finds a way to not live anymore.

considering the angels lost by 3
and the indians are losing by 5, not only are we on pace to hold in terms of GB, but by run differential, we're set to improve out postseason odds. 47.8% coming into today according to coolstandings.com, if the Clev-Tex score holds up we might be looking at 50% tomorrow.

Don't look now,
but the red-hot A's are only 10.5 games back. And people said this team isn't due for their usual second half surge. Tell that to their 1 game win streak!
