JJ rocks. I'll post the chart when I get back home in a few hours.

Biggest Contribution: Kenji Johjima, +18.9%
Biggest Suckfest: Ichiro, -10.6%
Most Important At Bat: Betancourt single, +11.6%
Most Important Pitch: Granderson homer, -10.0%
Total Contribution by Pitcher(s): +21.6%
Total Contribution by Position Players: +25.6%
Total Contribution by Opposition: +2.8%

(What is this chart?)

And you thought the Boston game was tough. Tomorrow afternoon is when we really find out if we should be Weaver believers.

Sweet Caroline needs to never be played at Safeco ever again.

Bill Bavasi on post game show
Saying that the three pitchers everyone knows are available for trade aren't difference makers and doesn't want to sell the farm for them.  Oh if I could believe that.

Yeah, I was at the stadium tonight.  Of course the Mariners won.  No, I'm not going tomorrow, but you're all welcome to join me on Monday!

Also, I watched the game from the Hit it Here Cafe for the first time.  Whee!

Question:
How many of those other 18 games you've been to, have been Mondays? Because I remember the last LL Day was on a Monday as well.

by Coach Owens on Jul 14, 2007 10:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They've all been on BECU family nights
as the tickets in view reserved are $10 those nights.  It's easier for everyone to afford making the trip.

by Gomez on Jul 14, 2007 11:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not many at all
I go to games all the bloody time.  The only reason the LL Nights have been a Monday and a Tuesday is because those were the BECU nights, which are great because you can get cheap seats and they're relatively uncrowded, so easier for spontaneous plans rather than putting anything together far in advance.

Anyway, for the record, I've been to these games:

Monday Apr 2: OAK, Won 4-0  (opening day)
Tuesday Apr 3: OAK, Won 8-4
Friday Apr 13: TEX, Lost 2-5
Sunday Apr 29: KC, Won 5-1
Tuesday May 1: CWS, Won 5-2
Friday May 11: NYY, Won 3-0
Tuesday May 15: ANA, Won 11-3   (first LL night)
Wednesday May 16: ANA, Lost 0-5
Sunday May 20: SD, Lost 1-2
Thursday May 31: TEX, Won 9-5
Sunday Jun 3: TEX, Won 11-6
Monday Jun 4: BAL, Won 7-4   (second LL night)
Tuesday Jun 19: PIT, Lost 3-5
Wednesday Jun 20: PIT, Won 7-0
Thursday Jun 21: PIT, Won 3-0
Tuesday Jun 26: BOS, Won 8-7
Saturday Jun 30: TOR, Won 8-3
Thursday July 12: DET, Won 3-2
Saturday July 14: DET, Won 6-4

So there's your answer.  I've been to 2 Monday games so far, this week will make it 3, and that'll be it for me for this year.

How cool was that?
I was there tonight too. Unreal. Kenji picked a nice time to come out of his slump. Highlight was Ibanez' catch though. Someone please do a Tonya Harding on Reitsma though - I know he's a flyball pitcher, but Jesus H Christ.

Does anyone have tips for how to get a bus back from Safeco? I was waiting on 4th & Brougham for 40 minutes for my bus back to Fremont and ended up walking. Metro's a joke. Tons of people waiting and most ended up either catching a cab or walking.

I wish this event were tonight. When is it? February. Then why are you wearing a tux? It's after 6 - what am I, a Farmer?

by IrishMariner on Jul 14, 2007 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've parked there before and always left happy...
...but a) I take my u-lock and b) I take my beater (just in case).  I think the large numbers of people around is a probably a decent deterrent vs theft, too.

Another idea:  try parking in one of the office building underground lots downtown (but not the IDX tower as their gate goes down around 9pm and you won't be able to get back in after the game to fetch your ride).

by Will D on Jul 14, 2007 11:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

which bus?
I usually take a First Ave shuttle or just walk up to First and Union, and I grab the 15 or 18 bus back to Ballard.  I don't know if that helps, but basically, don't wait down by the stadium because most of the buses get rerouted for about 30 minutes after the game.

the 16 and 26

Guillen to be traded?
Toronto Sun says so, without enlighting anyone.

"- The Mariners will move Jose Guillen for pitching help. That would open the door for outfielder Adam Jones, who is hitting .309 with 22 homers at triple-A Tacoma.?

by Goose on Jul 15, 2007 12:53 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

my feelings, they are so mixed
the more I think about it, the more I think that we do need some sort of upgrade in pitching. But replacing Guillen with Jones seems pretty stupid. Guillen is pretty decent offensively and he's got a good arm, and if we put Jones in his place it does nothing about the serious suck in our lineup--Ibanez, Sexson, and Vidro.

by mary on Jul 15, 2007 1:07 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I will say this
Guillen has been on the last week or so...and the Mariners have a history of trading players at their lowest value point...

If they wanted to trade Guillen, soon would be the time.

I dont get it, either...

by Slica on Jul 15, 2007 1:10 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Guillen has a good arm
but he has crappy range.

Jones in RF over Guillen is probably worth ~5-10 runs in defense over the remaining 74 games.

by Matthew on Jul 15, 2007 2:26 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Trading Guillen is not a good solution
Becuase he can help this team win as opposed to Vidro, and Ibanez against LHP, who are hitting barely better than my mother would.

by phil333 on Jul 15, 2007 6:07 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I agree.
I have no doubt that Jones would outperform Vidro. I'd also be willing to bet that he has a good chance of out performing Ibanez...but Guillen? I don't know.
These pretzels....are making me thirsty!

by Goose on Jul 15, 2007 6:12 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed
I guess its under the 'give something to get something' cliche.

Seriously though, if they wanted to get rid of an OFer with value, Jeremy Reed is right there.

My point there is, Reed has NO future as a starter for us (with Ichiro, Jones, Balentien, Guillen, Ibanez)...and if he was seen as our 4th OFer, Ellison wouldnt be here instead.

Reed has shown a little pop in Triple A. (9 HRs)

Id look to start any deal with Reed...and see where it snowballs from there, even if it leaves Reed as only the 2nd best piece that we give away.

by Slica on Jul 15, 2007 6:38 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Heck no.
It would have to be for some really good pitching before pulling that trigger.

by ThundaPC on Jul 15, 2007 1:15 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

hmm
Yay
-opens up a spot for Jones w/o losing a LH bat
-wasn't figuring into '08 plans anyways
-traded at peak value, so rare from a M standpoint
-current hot streak withstanding, was a suck hole in the lineup for like 6 weeks previous
-new pitchers? I can dream they will be good until the trade goes through at least-

Nay
-one of the few people hitting right now-
-even when not hitting, nowhere near the biggest problem in the lineup-
-Raul still in LF, Vidro still at DH-

overall, I think the pluses outweigh the minuses from a tangible standpoint, though I cannot imagine we would get back anything worthwhile in terms of pitching unless its prospects. RP we don't need, even a good one would only be a marginal improvement, and good SP we can't get.

by Matthew on Jul 15, 2007 2:25 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I will say this though, when he goes, weather
it be through the trade in the coming days/weeks or when his option isn't picked up in the offseason, it's gonna be sad to Guillen leave. I for one, am a fan.

DEAR TEH LONGTIME MARINERS FANS...
ATTENTION, FOLKS:

Sorry to intrude on the party here, but I just wanted to say that as a native Nationals fan I've been reading Lookout Landing since you traded Snelling & Fruto for Vidro...if I recall correctly, that is the exact point where Jeff switched LL's front-page image to the sinking ship.

I think it was that piece of black humor which really endeared me both to this site, and perhaps to the team as well.  I would surmise that both you guys and I are in agreement that the Vidro trade was a bilking (if only because you agreed to eat so much of Jose's salary), but I want you all to know that, as a sabermetric douchebag, I picked the M's as the BIG SURPRISE team in the AL West, and I actually stand to win a ridiculous sum of money from a buddy if you finish within 2 games of a playoff berth.

Two game margin?  That would be okay, I suppose.  Actually, you know what? At this point, it wouldn't be. I started with a pecuniary/pride interest in the M's, but it's become something more.  I've listened to almost EVERY SINGLE GAME YOU'VE PLAYED this year - and fallen in love with crusty ole' Dave Niehaus in the process - witnessed Ichiro put up an MVP quality year, Putz go insane with Gagne-level dominance, and seen the Jeff Weaver whiplash performance.  I've visited this site (and USS Mariner) daily, become intimate with all your in-jokes about your guys, begun to root for them, and now?

Now, well...now, I might be just about the only Washington, DC native who's psychologically invested in your success this year.  Maybe it's because I still have a soft spot in my heart for Jose "Angry Man" Guillen (that was our nickname for him in DC...I love the knife-wielding pic you've made for him), maybe it's because Turbo gave the Expos/Nats many good years before becoming the slowpoke GIDP machine he is now...maybe it's because y'all deserve it.

Anyway, I'm rambling.  My only salient points?

1.) Congrats on a great win tonight.
2.) Fuck those goddamn Angels (still bitter about the Donnelly/Robinson/Guillen pine-tar cheating incident from 2005).
3.) Congrats on re-signing Ichiro, one of the most exciting players in the game.
4.) Go M's!

G'night, Seattlites.

P.S.
P.S. -

Even though I'm sorta disappointed to hear that Guillen is mentioned in trade rumors as about to be traded to make room for AJ (yes, I've been haunting LL and USS Mariner for so long that I refer to him as AJ too...), I just wanted to say:

J.J. Putz = unholy.  Four out save?  3K in the 9th?  Dear god he's good.

"psychologically invested

Good luck. Investing yourself in the success of the Seattle Mariners usually brings pain in the end.

Should be a fun ride this year.

by seahawk24 on Jul 15, 2007 12:51 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Trust me dood, I know...
Yeah, I know about heartbreak.  The first time the M's really registered on my radar was in 2001.  Perhaps you remember that year?  The year they won 116 games? Ichiro's MVP/ROY year?  And yet lost to the hated Yanks 4-1 in the ALCS, for the second year in a row.  Man, that frosted my toast.

Want to hear something sad?  I have a girlfriend who I dearly love; she's perfect for me, and I plan on marrying her someday, I want to spend the rest of my life with her.

And yet I'm far more concerned with seeing whether Weaver can come through tomorrow than I am with hanging out with her.  Ye gods.

We've all been there.
The Mariners kind of determine my schedule. As soon as the baseball offseason ends, my dating offseason begins.

by Jeff on Jul 15, 2007 1:08 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

My baby knows I have a mistress...
...and her name is baseball.  She's not happy with it, she's jealous of it, but she's come to accept it.  I'm trying desperately hard to turn her into a fan as a way of making our lives easier.  She comes from a family of hardcore Cubs fans - the real ones who have been living in Chicago for decades, not the fratty bandwagon types - and yet she's a dedicated non-sports type. Which is sort of cool because she's ultra-feminine, which pays off in dividends for me and all.  But still, you know...

By the way, Jeff, I just wanted to say that your Win Expectancy chart from Thursday's crazy Beltre game, made me laugh out loud at work.  I can't explain it exactly, but the face of the clown in that picture you inserted?  Perfect summary.

by esoteric on Jul 15, 2007 1:18 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good luck
Its not that the team can be annoying when its inconsistent...and its not that us Seattle fans are moody after the Super Bowl and Sonics  Moving fiasco...

...its both.

I love this place to be honest. The jokes are nonstop and fresh. Baseball can be slow and this place makes time go by faster.

As for your loyalty...feel free to root for us, but dont become a bandwagoner. Another words, follow us now and not when/if we win the WS. I really cant root for the Nationals...I liked the Expos (one of 3 people!!!)...im in Maryland, too, btw.

Keep your eyes open while watching the team, Ichiro does so many things the mainstream media doesnt look into. He is entertainment in his own right.

by Slica on Jul 15, 2007 1:00 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No bandwagoneering here....
I'd like to think I'm free from bandwagoneering accusations, given that I first started to really religiously follow the M's at what everybody (except me, it seems!) felt was their recent low point: the Snelling-Vidro trade.  I'm not exactly a fan of Bavasi either, mind you, but even though I knew that was a bad move I felt that you guys were going to put up a much better fight this year than anyone else gave you credit for.  I won't lie - I didn't HONESTLY think that you would make the postseason - but I really believed you would challenge, and that the Athletics were going to fall apart.

I don't really have an American League team I'm truly committed to.  I was an Astros fan before the Nats came to town (my first baseball memory was of the '86 NLCS), and I never could get behind the Orioles.  So I typically have a measured admiration for any quality competitors in the AL.  But the fact that everyone - including a lot of y'all! - picked the Mariners to absolutely SUCK this year, combined with their sudden competitiveness and the great stories of Ichiro, Putz and King Felix...well, at this point I really want to see it happen.

Especially with a goofball like Jeff Weaver leading the way.

by esoteric on Jul 15, 2007 1:10 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

We're all waiting
for the downfall.

But enjoying the ride nonetheless.

I agree about the Orioles. Ive lived in Maryland all my life (im 20), and I cant stand them. I respect Ripken, but thats it. Or lets put it this way---Tony Tarasco is my all time favorite Oriole. Thats how sad my non-liking them is.

by Slica on Jul 15, 2007 1:15 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Teehee. Jose Guillen.
My mom, who lives in VA, built a Nats bear at a Build-a-Bear-Workshop in Potomac last year.  She named it Jose Guillenbear because she thinks he's cuddly.  I'm really honestly not making this up.  I told her to at least call it Fuzzy Guillen, but hey, whatever.

I still like Ball-Wonk's nickname "Guillen the Barbarian" best though, which is his character name in my Dodgers and Dragons series.

Either way, he's so cuddly and cute!  Not quite as cuddly and cute as Jose Lopez, but definitely more cuddly and cute than Stay-Puft Vidro.

PS - don't worry about intruding on the party when your message contains the words "fuck those goddamn Angels".  That's our standard secret handshake greeting to each other for when LL readers meet at games, you know.

by Deanna on Jul 15, 2007 1:12 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

RE: Those goddamn Angels...
Ooh...I have a feeling I'd fit in among the Safeco crowd, even if I wore my beaten-up Nats cap (complete w/Chad Cordero signature!). Yes indeedy, I dislike the Angels on mere principle after our 2005 interleague series against them...which we won, I might add.

Glad to see you're a Ball-Wonk reader.  He hasn't posted in awhile, but he's one of the greats.  Guillen is a barbarian, but it you give him respect, he'll be a barbarian for you.  He would have killed in cold blood for Frank Robinson, that much is obvious.  He seems like he's working out well for you too.  Honestly, I'm nobody to be making recommendations - and I know Raul has a sentimental appeal to y'all since he actually came back - but I would rather see him go (or be platooned) rather than Guillen.  The Angry Man can offer so much to a competing team.

Last night
Due to extenuating circumstances I wasn't able to watch much of last night's game at all.  I knew it was 2-1 in the 5th or so, and when I finally got to turn on mlb.tv for a few minutes I happened to see Johjima at the plate with the bases loaded.  He fouled off a high fastball and it looked like he wanted to destroy it.  Next pitch, salami.

The next time I could see the game was when Putz was brought in, so I got to see the tapper back to the mound to end the threat.

Great job, it's too bad Anaheim couldn't comply.

Ichiro's mojo
From Shannon Drayer's blog (at the very end):

Looks like Johjima was looking for some Ichiro Mojo today. During batting practice he rested his bats next to Ichiro's on the bench. I asked Ichiro about this and he told me it was fine with him, might get Joh a hit or two.

I think I know where to find Joh's bats for a while.
