7/14: Open Game Thread

ROSTER NOTE: Woods up, Feierabend excommunicated

First Pitch: 7:05pm PDT

Granderson CF Ichiro CF Polanco 2B Vidro DH Sheffield DH Ibanez LF Ordonez RF Guillen RF Guillen SS Sexson 1B Rodriguez C Beltre 3B Casey 1B Johjima C Thames LF Betancourt SS Inge 3B Lopez 2B ---------- ----------

Rogers (3-0, 1.04)          Beluga Tits (8-7, 4.54)

Takashi Saito has blown his last two save opportunities, which should pretty much erase any doubt about JJ being the best closer in baseball. In other news, even Yankee Stadium has an East Coast bias. The only way to even the score is for Safeco to get some New Yorker hit with a foul ball. I, for one, won't stand for this kind of disrespect.

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

Re: Yankee stadium
I can't believe the guy who fell, or his more sober friends, didn't even check to see if the guy was ok.  For all the talk about "class", those Yank fans sure didn't exhibit any.

by jtopps on Jul 14, 2007 4:09 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Class?
I'm not sure about you, but this falls exactly in line with the reputation of New Yorkers.

by 88fingerslukee on Jul 14, 2007 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, i know
but everyone loves to say how the Yanks have class.

Best part of that article is how the victim's wife alludes that maybe it wasn't an accident:

"It's very steep up there, but if it was an innocent trip, they would ask if Paul was OK."

by jtopps on Jul 14, 2007 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe they're referring to their economic class
You do know how much it costs to live there.

by Gomez on Jul 14, 2007 4:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They all have class
because they are all in still school and have never graduated...

zing!

ok that was lame.

Turk from Scrubs
Turk says it better--

'You're like school in July--- No class!!'

Hey, I think I saw those people before.
I was at the first Reds game with my brother and we were sitting in Center Field and one row across there was what looked like a family sitting there. One lady was wearing a shirt that said they were going on a trip to see a whole bunch of different games on the East Coast, I bet the ages were about right too.
And thou said "Mix your pitches, thy holy Felix" and hallelujah we rejoice!

by Coach Owens on Jul 14, 2007 4:19 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Ball washing of Ryan Franklin
on the Cards/Phils game. Didn't catch who was announcing, but they were incredulously wondering how Seattle never gave him a chance to pitch regularly and prove himself.

I guess 30+ starts in 3 straight seasons isn't enough.

by hcoguy on Jul 14, 2007 4:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

By the way
when you think about it, it's pretty funny that a lot of us were upset with a game that JJ didn't even blow.

sue, make sure you sue the right people (namely, the person who crashed into you), but sue your hearts out. Jackasses like that, I hope they get everything taken from them.

I think one issue
is that they don't know who it was.  The guy fell on her while drunk, then his friends whisked him away out of sight.

by Gomez on Jul 14, 2007 7:04 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

is there a place/way
to see how a player hits based on where they are in the lineup? I have this sense that Jose Lopez hits a lot better when they give him a chance higher in the batting order.

by mary on Jul 14, 2007 7:07 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

ok, found something
looks like Lopez has hit for a .768 OPS when he hits second, .732 when he hits 7th, .591 when he hits 8th, and .683 when he hits 9th.

I don't really know enough about stats to say if this is significant or not, but it seems to confirm my theory somewhat.

Man, I wish Bruce Froemming would hurry up and just quit.  This is some of the worst ball/strike calling I've seen in awhile... Well, okay, since the All Star Game (Bruce again).

That Beltre play on Thursday was all a complete cluster fuck by Bruce.  I was at the game nearly behind home plate and it was hilarious to watch the big guy lumber around and try and figure out what was happening.

I hate Rick Reed.
According to Gameday he called at least two pitches that were clearly in the strike zone balls. Those ABs both would have been strikeouts if he called them strikes and both those ABs either scored a run or got somebody on who would later score.

In the heat of the moment

no it's not
balls over the wall go to the fans first.

by Matthew on Jul 14, 2007 8:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What is the rule on going into the stands?
If you can just dive into the stands, what is to keep you from climbing into the stands, walking up six steps and catching the ball?

Is the rule that as long as your feet last touch the ground in fair territory, then you are allowed to catch it?

Seems dangerous - especially to the father holding an infant.

Of course, taking an infant to the front row of a baseball game seems unnecessarily risky to me, also...

by marineroptimist on Jul 14, 2007 8:34 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think the rule if you can catch it, it's an out
though the stated scenario is damn near impossible.  Most guys won't do what Inge just did.

by Gomez on Jul 14, 2007 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

no, i'm pretty sure there's some provision
about last touching the field of play since otherwise you could just climb over the OF wall and catch a HR ball on the other side.

Rally Fries
A while back, someone hit a foul ball to the right side.  A fan tried to get the ball rolling up the line.  In the process, he spilled his fries on the field ruining his meal.

Blowers felt sorry for the fan and paid for some fries out of his own pocketbook.  An attendant delivered the fries to the fan and the rest was history.

Well, actually, the next game someone actually had a sign saying "Blower, give me some fries"....THEN the rest was history.
