Ichiro Deal Official

There will be a press conference at 1:30.

Baker's blog and FoxSports.com both had the scoop.

Hooray. After the "Tejada/I-Rod have all but signed with the Seattle Mariners" debacles a few years ago, I was hesitant to get too excited about this. But now that it's official, I'm absolutely stoked. It's rare that Seattle gets to retain a superstar.

blah blah blah, have to get this diary to 300 characters.

Is the press conference on TV?
And thou said "Mix your pitches, thy holy Felix" and hallelujah we rejoice!

It wouldn't hurt to check FoxSports
but I haven't heard anything.

Great
being a terror on the base, creating runs, preventing runs, and creating wins are way overrated in these parts.  I think we need homeruns and RBI's, not wins.  What a terrible deal :p

I get SOOOO sick of these arugment
Ugggggh:

and this kind of money is usually reserved for the big bats or, in Jeter's case, a consistently good and versatile top-of-the-lineup hitter with a track record as a team leader. Ichiro is also on the wrong side of 30 -- he'll turn 34 in October.

Ichiro is >>> Jeter.

Also, (not that this article brings it up), I really wish people would quit quoting OPS or even OPS+ when they talk about his offensive value.  I was toying with the numbers, and because of his high OBP, I remember looking, and OPS underrates him by ~.050-.090 points on any given year.  That's freaking huge.  That puts him up there with many of the top hitters, RATE wise, let alone accumulative.  Anyone who denies that he's a top run-producer, well, under-values true run production.  I really, really, really wish we could get away from OPS.  It sucks.

Because
ichiro is not consistently good and versatile top-of-the-lineup hitter, and who gives a rats ass about "a track record as a team leader".

How many ways can you spell idiot?

FSN
I think they are playing it on FSN.

woohoo
is it bad that my first thought was, "awesome -- now I think I can go out and buy some Ichiro knicknacks as obligatory gifts for people when I arrive in Japan, and not worry about them being out of date"?

:)

ichiro says he looks forward
to playing 10 more years when this next contract is up... awesome

"I'm going to do my best...
...to play 10 more years here after that."

by Graham on Jul 13, 2007 1:42 PM PDT   0 recs

FWIW, if Ichiro did manage to play until he
was like 46 he would have somewhere in the neighborhood of 7,000 hits or something.

Awesome
I've been holding back on any premature joy on this one.  Now I can finally say it -

Ichiro, from the bottom of my heart, welcome to Mariners immortality.

new ichi-ism
Hey long time reader, first time poster.  I just had to put this quote up.  Ichiro once again toying with the media.

When asked whose counsel he valued most during contract negotiations that began in January, he said, "Ikky, my dog."

"He said, 'Ruff, ruff, ruff,"' a smiling Suzuki said through an interpreter. "That means, 'Stay, stay, stay."'

I love that.
Him fucking with everyone in the media is great. He tells his interpreter to say the weirdest shit, and gets to read it the next day in the paper as if it was some guru's insightful comment.
