Marlins President Rips Ichiro Contract Extension

Apologies in the beginning that I can't find the actual transcript, but you should hear what the Marlins president had to say about the Ichiro contract extension.  He was on the Dan LeBetard radio show and essentially said that the extension was outrageous and that he couldn't possibly believe that it was true.  He went on to say that this contract "will bring down the sport."  It was easily one of the most condescending interviews I've ever heard, essentially mirroring all the Ichiro haters out there.  If anyone has a good way of finding something like this, pleas post the actual transcript.  It was appalling, and he deserves a good cock punch.

This will bring down the sport...
Not Mike Hampton, Kevin Brown, or Darren Dreiford making more a while ago (which would be even more translated out over the years).  Not the $30 mill+ A-Rod will get at the end of the year.

Anybody else think the Marlins president is just bitter because he's not allowed to spend money?  I mean this is the Marlins we're talking about here.

I heard this

If they don't like us
maybe they won't trade us Willis.

Or maybe they'll think we're exceedingly dumb and we can get away with a bargain of a deal.

Or maybe they'll ask for Jones.

...

Or maybe I'm just pulling this all out of my ass.

They played the clip on ESPN
Holy crap.  Dude sounded like he wanted to hang himself if (when) this deal actually goes down.

Of course we may be seeing a lot of idiots saying that this contract is not worth it because Ichiro doesn't hit home runs.

by Goose on Jul 11, 2007 8:43 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The Marlins hate center fielders.
I can't think of any other reason for this and for Alfredo Amezaga leading that team in CF innings.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 11, 2007 8:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

List of Marlins CF
Juan Pierre (483 G)
Preston Wilson (535 G)
Chuck Carr (346 G)
Devon White (211 G)
Todd Dunwood (188 G)
Reggie Abercrobie (102 G)
Alfredo Amezaga (134 G)

While not a great group, Pierre and Wilson weren't horrible.  The rest of the guys are horrible.

different sport but...
If the marlins were in the basketball biz the guy probably would have had an heartattack quickly followed by a stroke at the sight of the rashard lewis deal.  he got 6 year 126 mil and he isnt even the best player on the orlando team.

Srsly
It's ridiculous how much money they spend on high end players.  Their salary cap and structure is an absolute joke.

Anybody read Bill Simmons chat today?
About 1/3 of it was making fun of how bad the Lewis deal is.

Is it wrong
that when I hear "Orlando Magic" I still can only think of Penny Hardaway, Shaq, and some great Chicago Bulls games?

by I'm NOT Corco on Jul 12, 2007 12:08 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely not
because the team's done nothing significant since.

by Gomez on Jul 12, 2007 12:23 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

with a simple formula
If you use the transative propery formula a=b and b=c then a=c and it goes as:

rashards salary = kobes salary
kobes salary = kobes performace
therefor rashards salary will equal kobes perforamce.

Now you can see why he is worth that money you pay him like kobe he will play like kobe.  im sure this has to be the logic behind orlandos thought process behind this contract

by wadswerth on Jul 12, 2007 12:44 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So then if they signed ME to that contract...
I'd be as good as Kobe...sweet.  I'll remember you all when I'm sitting in my mansion.  By the way I'm demanding a trade to Indiana.  GO PACERS!!!

That's right Dan. So enjoy your 5 games under .500, go nowhere team. Nobody cares about you or your franchise. Your fans are the most pathetic in the entire sport. And your superstar is going to leave in a few years while ours is staying for 5 more. Good luck with that.

Geesh, what's his beef?
ok let's not even count the infinite amount of on-field worth he brings to the Mariners, or any team for that matter. The marketing revenue, season ticket sales, and other asian players seeing the Mariners as a mega-pro asian team is worth it's weight in gold.

He really needs to take the panties out of his uptight ass crack, and stop worrying what another team 3000 miles away are doing and start worrying about his own pile of crap team.

by Scruffy Lefty on Jul 12, 2007 7:47 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmmmm.
As much crap as we give Howard Lincoln and Chuck Armstrong, Samson deserves 1000-fold more.

Of course, his comments sound all too familiar from back in the Smulyan and definitely the Argyros era.  I remember being dang elated that the M's actually finally kept one of their stars around, when they didn't do anything w/Alvin Davis.  Tartabull -- gone.  Langston -- gone (not that I regret that trade, really).  When players were due real contracts, the M's tried their best to dump them.  And not in a Billy Beane way, either.

They flubbed the RJ thing, but at least they gave their best effort with Griffey, A-Rod, and now Ichiro.  They may still be mental midgets w/r/t HOW they spend the money, but I will not call our current execs cheap.

Fry ME, Blow!!!

I want to hear what he has to say
when AROD signs for 30,000,000 a year? Is that going to bring down baseball?
I can't believe this guy actual runs a pro ball club. Man, what a clueless fuck, both on Ichiro, and the market value.

Look at all the people who don't have the value of Ichiro and make over 20m/per.

Seriously dude, get another vocation.

even marlin's fans see through this whiny rant
http://www.sportech.info/

"This coming from our idiot President says this to me. Cabrera, be prepared to move your family out of South Florida because your not staying here. Look, it's pretty obvious by now that the Marlins management is preparing the fans for the inevitable with these comments. There is no way Cabrera, who is likely to command upwards of 20 million a year, is going to resign with the Marlins while A) Jeffrey Loria still owns this team or B) We do not land a new stadium deal. The Marlins will continue to reap the benefits of revenue sharing and laugh in the faces of teams like the Mariners who lock up key players and superstars to longterm contracts.

The funny thing is I can picture Presidents and owners across the land sitting back and laughing at the audio below."

this will bring the sport down like...
steroids before this, curt flood/free agency before that, and including players of all races before that.

Seems like baseball owners/commish/gms claim that baseball is teetering over the edge all the time, and yet, opening day is still one of the greatest days in this country.

Maybe this guy (florida gm) should think, or at least look at historical trends, and then speak. Just an idea.

Seriously, guys
This is just a retard talking like a retard, and it shows in the product his org puts on the field.  I'm not too worked up about it.

In the end, we have an iconic centerfielder on our team for the next 5.5 years... and he has Joe Borchard, Miguel Olivo, Reggie Abercrombie, a half empty football stadium 60 miles from Downtown in a market that doesn't really give a crap about the ballclub.  Who wins?

Baseball in Florida should
cease to exist in the major leagues.  It just doesn't work over there, if you look at the attendance figures.  Tampa Bay and Florida combined would barely be over Seattle's attendance numbers.  Even when the Marlins won the whole thing, they were 5th to last in attendance.  Florida is a football state first and a basketball state second.

And, I'm glad that Ichiro has a good chance of staying in Seattle for the rest of his career.  You don't get too many of those.  Props to Bavasi for pulling off this deal.

as an angels fan...
it's hard for me to say this, but it is great for baseball that the m's resigned ichiro.  One of the greatest pure hitters since ted williams deserves that extension, plus he is an icon who deserves the privelege to play his entire career in one market.  If it hasn't happened already, at the end of his career there will be streets named after him.  A-Rod can't say that.  I say good for the mariners, (but I still think he'd look better in red).

Ichiro nets the Mariners $20 million on shirt and ticket sales a season EASILY.

If he stays off the DL that alone pays for the ocntract regardless of his on-field production.
