First Pitch: 1:05pm PDT

Wells CF Ichiro CF Zaun C Beltre 3B Rios RF Ibanez DH Thomas DH Guillen RF Stairs 1B Sexson 1B Lind LF Broussard LF Hill 2B Johjima C Clark 3B Betancourt SS Clayton SS Ballgame 2B ---------- ----------

Marcum (4-2, 3.13)          Weaver (2-6, 7.71)

I think there's a lot I'm never going to know or understand about Hargrove's resignation, but for all the shit I've given him, I wasn't looking for this, and I wish him all the best. We'll see how the players respond, but down in Tacoma Julio Mateo was unavailable for comment, as he fell to the ground and wept uncontrollably.

Win it for Grover? Sure, that works. It's kind of weird to be playing one last game with Hargrove at the helm after he's already announced his resignation, but if ever there was a day for the guy to flip out and manage like a crazy idiot, this is it. Hello, five consecutive squeeze bunts.

Good luck, Mike Hargrove. And good luck, John McLaren. Don't suck.

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

Glorious Day!!!!
I'm on cloud nine right now.  With this I know think the M's have a legit shot.

By the by he says it's passion.  I'll speculate that it might also be he asked for a new deal and got completely shot down.  Complete speculation but still, seems plausible.

Hargrove shocker
I'm not a big fan of Hargrove, but I'm stunned by this.  I can't believe that there isn't something else behind this decision - way to abrupt.  I hope we don't find out it is some kind of serious illness...

I would contest him being the best, though. Name a starting pitcher who developed under him (not, Randy does not count).

There's the Joe Morgan who managed the Red Sox, and there's the Joe Morgan who parlayed his HOF career into an ESPN gig.  They're not the same.

Marcum has some interesting THT numbers
He has gotten incredibly lucky on BABIP and LOB% but his homerun rate is really high. So from I can gather, he must have given up a lot of solo shots and he should be ripe for us to single him to death. Or someone else will soon. I'm rooting for continued regression for both starters. Weaver needs to get down under the jetliner numbers.

by hcoguy on Jul 1, 2007 12:07 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

In the eighth inning today
Hargrove needs to yell at the ump over every called strike.

by Katal LM on Jul 1, 2007 12:07 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think it's completely appropriate
Every possible scenerio for today's game makes some degree of sense for Hargrove's last game.

Weaver does well and the Mariners win - That's nice. Hargrove gets to go out on top.

Weaver gets shelled - That's what Hargrove gets for '04-'06.

Weaver does okay, but not well enough to win - The Cleveland Indians, 1995-1997.

listening to Hargrove on FSN
Hargrove basically just said what we've been saying all along.  he doesn't have the passion and he doesn't trust himself to make the right decisions in tough situations.  he said "i don't want to be responsible for losing 1 or 2 games down the stretch and end up 1 game out of the Wild Card." this is amazing self-reflection -- and shows a remarkable self-awareness.

i know i felt like he already costs us two games this season thru some really lame managing calls.  but to have the personal insight to admit this is a problem and will continue to be is quite remarkable.

To use the phrase of the season
he's regressing to the mean. Although he does look better than he did earlier in the year; better curve, a few more miles on his fastball, improved command.

by Jeff on Jul 1, 2007 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it's a couple things.
Definitely the curve/slider improvement.  He's got much better command of that pitch, and he's pitching instead of throwing.

His pitches just look a whole lot better to me - especially what pitches he's throwing.  Pitch selection is huge.

i still can't believe it.  but he has really turned it around.  i had given him a short leash for those NL games, he performed.  then i gave him a short leash for the AL games, and jesus he's delivering.

these lineups he's facing are good hitters -- its not the weak NL bottom feeders.

he's not a #1 and he's not worth 8million, but this team needs some consistent starting pitching and he's gettin' er done.

this part of the line up sucks in these situations
i don't know what the stats are...but the 2 out down a run situation is terrible with Raul and Richie coming up.  i get this awful pit in my stomach and just wait for the out to come.

they occasionally do something magnificent (read extra bases or home run) but more often strike or create an easy out.
