Halladay (9-2, 4.25)        Batista (7-6, 4.85)

In case you thought we were the only team who makes up non-existent injuries, the Red Sox just called up Jacoby Ellsbury and put Joel Pineiro on the DL with a "sore ankle" even though he's perfectly fine. It's not just us. What we need now is to find a way to get Adam Jones in the everyday lineup. You can't DL Ibanez; he's Mr. Mariner. You can't DL Guillen; he'll kill a guy. I'm thinking Vidro to the DL with gastroenteritis. Bavasi gets his boy on the roster, Hargrove doesn't have to bench a veteran, and Vidro gets to stop exerting himself for two weeks. Everybody wins.

The matchup looks like trouble, but the M's are batting .295 against groundball pitchers, and for a guy who supposedly coasts until he's in trouble, Halladay's been all kinds of ugly with men on base. Of course, the Blue Jays have pounded guys like Batista all season long, but Safeco's a bad environment for the most extreme flyball lineup in the AL. There's hope.

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

Ibanez injury count
Today would be his 7th day out of the lineup with injury. This team cannot continue to have a bench of Ellison, Bloomquist and Burke. Ibanez is hurting the team by not demanding that he be placed on the DL.

Wladimir Balentien
now has, cough, a higher OPS (.971 to .961), fewer strikeouts (65 to 74), more walks (38 to 27), more stolen bases (13 to 5), fewer caught stealings (3 to 5), and only 3 fewer extra base hits (38 to 41) than Adam Jones.

Why again is Adam Jones the solution to our problems at the major league level?  I'm not sure Balentien is, either, but I can't fathom the level of fanboy enthusiasm for Jones, when he's striking out more than once a game and not even the best outfielder on the Tacoma roster.

by dwm7 on Jun 30, 2007 5:27 PM PDT reply actions

Jones plays a mean outfield.
Balentien does not. And LF defense has been absolutely killing us.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 30, 2007 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions

LF Defense
hasn't been near the problem that shortstop defense has been....

Its funny how last year Jones was a defensive liability because he had never played the position and now he's talked about defensively like he's a gold glover.

with the way this team has been playing, I don't see any reason to go making changes to the offense or defense, just to get a rookie who is almost guaranteed to struggle.... the only thing this team should be focused on is improving the pitching staff.... finding guys that can actually pitch effectively at the major league level.

by MfaninAlaska on Jun 30, 2007 6:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Huh? LF defense has been WAY more a problem
than the SS defense has been. Just because Yuni throws a ball away every other game doesn't mean he still doesn't have awesome range. The arm is just the one aspect of his defense that's a problem.

Raul does nothing right on defense. It's all bad all the time.

Bringing Jones up not only improves the defense, but it moves Raul to DH which also improves the offense. Because even if he does struggle, I'm pretty sure Jones would outhit Vidro.

by Goose on Jun 30, 2007 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Frankly
I don't buy that Jones would put up anything close to a .700 OPS coming up this year.... ... and you'll likely see a low .600 to mid .600 OPS out of him.... and it wouldn't shock me in the least to see him put up a sub .300 OBP if he came up now and played thru the rest of the year.  I know everyone is enarmoured with his power but he'll be K'ing more than Sexson does ...

and frankly, I've heard so many people talk about this minor leaguers defense and that minor leaguers defense being great or atrocious.... and they come up and its pretty much the opposite of what you have been hearing so color me skeptical that Jones would be anything better then blah in the outfield.  Speed is not everything, as Randy Winn proved playing CF for the M's.

by MfaninAlaska on Jun 30, 2007 6:21 PM PDT up reply actions

You think he'll go from
a .992 OPS in AAA to something in the low- to mid-.600s?

And which minor leaguers are you talking about? Do you mean to imply that Adam Jones wouldn't be an improvement over Raul Ibanez?

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 30, 2007 6:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes I do
I believe if he came up right now, he'd be extremely overmatched.... and he'd struggle to put up a .650 OPS.... I've seen it way to many times with our young offensive players coming up... and those are guys that don't struggle to put the bat on the ball... and guys like Reed that even had decent plate disclipline become overmatched at this level..... Even Snelling had his major problems coming up and he's twice the hitter that Jones currently his and had 10x's better plate disclipline.

Reed coming up was supposed to be a horrible CF but he was better then the reports defensively.  Leone was supposed to be above average defensively at third and he was pretty terrible when he was up.  People talk about minor league defense quite a bit but it never really seems to hold true.

Would he be worse then Ibanez??? Don't know, I personally don't think Raul is nearly as horrendous as people make him out to be... he may not look as smooth as some outfielders, but I don't think he's nearly as bad as the rap he's suddenly getting this year... I see it all the time online, any ball that he doesn't get to is automatically because he's a terrible defender and Jones would have made that catch..... I don't buy that type of rhetoric because there really is no basis to believe it.  Just my opinions and I don't expect others to agree with me....

by MfaninAlaska on Jun 30, 2007 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions

What team are you watching?
He looks like Manny Ramirez on cement rollerskates.

by JI on Jun 30, 2007 6:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Um,
...well, then, by this logic, minor leaguers have to post a 1200 OPS to be any good.

Dude, this makes absolutely NO sense.

They have to come up sometime; you can't let them rot in the minor leagues.

(And, by the way...Reed didn't do QUITE that well in CF in his second year....)

by rtang on Jun 30, 2007 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah that's what I said
he should never be a major leaguer...... blah blah blah blah blah....

The fact is... he's 21 years old.... he's having a  breakout year at Tacoma.....

at the same time, the Mariners as a team, at 10 games above .500, are currently 5 games behind the division leaders, are less then that out of the wildcard race, and we want to bring up rookies who are expected to struggle and give him a fulltime job???  What message does that send to your team?  Its one thing if someone goes down for a while and you need a replacement, or if someone is struggling offensively beyond belief, that you bring up one of your young minor leaguers to fill in.... but you don't make those changes in the middle of a playoff race just because you don't really like someone....

as much as I know Vidro isn't all that hot offensively because he hits for an empty average the fact is he's currently second on the team in OBP, he's drawn more walks then he's had strikeouts.... removing the one player that shows plate discipline for another free swinger in the mold of Lopez and Betancourt really doens't seem like a good move at this point in the year.

if the M's drop out of the race then by all means, make your changes.... but why make them now in the middle of the race when your team is on a roll just the way it is (offensively speaking)....

by MfaninAlaska on Jun 30, 2007 6:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Vidro's horrendous lack of power negates what
ability he has to get on base.

Bringing up Jones improves the offense and the defense, thus improving the team, thus helping the team make the playoffs.

I fail to see the problem.

Then why
complain about Sexson?... because that's what Jones would be right now, with less power and more strikeouts.... yet every game thread I pretty much see everyone wanting to lynch Sexson for his Mendoza line batting average and high amount of K's....

by MfaninAlaska on Jun 30, 2007 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

A philosophical question:
in your opinion, should a contending team ever call up a prospect midseason to fill a regular role?

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 30, 2007 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions

yes they should
if someone is playing subpar baseball.... (more than just subpar defense).... or if someone gets hurt...or you trade away a player for a piece you need somewhere else.

I don't see the reason to make that move right now... None of the outfielders are struggling offensively and defensively.... some are having defensive issues, but plenty of teams have gone on to win things with poor defense...  So while it would be nice to have a defensive upgrade, I don't think its going to make near the impact on the pitching staff that you all seem to think it will

by MfaninAlaska on Jun 30, 2007 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions

If you look at the pitching market, though
this might be our best bet. Buehrle's one thing, but if the M's can't land him, there's not much else, unless you're a big Jason Jennings fan. There don't seem to be (m)any impact arms out there, so I feel like should Bavasi fall short of Buehrle, he should focus on calling up a potential impact bat/glove instead.

Settling for what we have
is what Pat Gillick did to use every year not too long ago. The fact is, we're in a position now where one more push might be all we need to get over the hump, and Jones offers that potential. He's not a guarantee, but I think the probability that this team makes the playoffs with Jones in left is better than if we stick with what we have.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 30, 2007 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions

This is going nowhere
I'm arguing about a guy that's pretty much been annointed the answer.... I can understand the enthusiasm for him.... I just don't get the hurry to have to make it happen right now... like this team is falling off a cliff or something without him.

by MfaninAlaska on Jun 30, 2007 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

We're not calling him the end all be all.
We're just saying the Jones in LF, and Ibanez at DH is alot better than Ibanez in LF and Vidro at DH.

I doubt you'll find anybody in the game of baseball who would disagree with that.

Do you think on a callup
that Jones will hit better then Broussard would if Broussard played every day?

by MfaninAlaska on Jun 30, 2007 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Brouusard is putting up a .765 OPS
I think Jones could come up and hit .280/.330/.450 which would be be better than Brouusard. He could also struggle and hit .250/.300/.420.

Just on pure offense, I think we'd be better with Raul/Brouusard than Raul/Jones. But with total value, Jones's defense tips the scales.

by Goose on Jun 30, 2007 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

It's not that they're falling off a cliff.
I think most of us are just looking for someone to put us over the top. And given the Buehrle sweepstakes that may never happen and the dearth of other quality arms on the market, Jones seems like one of the most desirable options.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 30, 2007 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Let's see:
Jones is far and away the best position player prospect we've had in a long time. At what point do you trust him? How much does a minor leaguer have to accomplish before you're willing to give him a shot? Yeah, he strikes out, but he also hits for average and tremendous power while playing a solid defensive outfield, and that has a ton of value to a team in precisely our situation.

Players make progress in the field. Reed was new to center when we first dealt for him, and he got better along the way. It's the same with Jones. He was drafted as a shortstop and pitcher, and he was pretty raw when first slide into center, but he's made a leap this year. The numbers bear out that Raul has been a defensive disaster, arguably the worst LF in baseball. I don't think there's any way that Jones is as bad, and I find it much more likely that he's a substantial improvement.

Leone had the jitters. He admitted as much. His fielding was fine - if you recall, it was his throws that sucked. That wouldn't really be much of an issue in LF.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 30, 2007 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

When do I trust him
well I do one of two things with him at this point... I DFA Ellison and bring him up and give him a game or two a week to play thru the rest of the year.... or I wait until after the trade deadline so see what position my team is in, and what parts I may have to trade away to improve the pitching staff.

If Jones doesn't play in the majors this year... is it going to set him back? Is it going to ruin his career?  No... its going to give him the opportunity to play everyday, and improve on the things that he still has problems with.... plate discipline.. base stealing... anything else that might need work, including his defense.... and if he continues to play this way in AAA thru the rest of the year, then you have the option of using him front the start of the year next year, and not having to pick up the option on a Guillen or someone else.

by MfaninAlaska on Jun 30, 2007 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Making him the 4th OF would be foolish.
If you bring him up, he plays everyday.
Protect the enviroment, or I'll FUCKING KILL YOU! CAPTAAAAAIIIINNNN PLANNNNET! ~Ted Turner

by Goose on Jun 30, 2007 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Why?
to have him come up and do like Willie... play a couple games a week, and fill in late every game on defense for either GUillen or Ibanez?  It would give him experience and he chance to adjust.  He's already seen some major league action, as you all suggest he's mastered AAA, so what is the harm in coming up and this year getting 150-250 at bats as a backup?

by MfaninAlaska on Jun 30, 2007 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Tough to get comfortable
without regular action. I also don't think there'd be that many at bats available as a reserve unless Hargrove really started resting his starters more often.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 30, 2007 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I understand your skepticism
and you could very easily be right. Jones might come up and flail away, making most of us look like idiots. I happen to disagree, because I think he has the potential to be a cog in a playoff run, but this is exactly the argument that's going on within the organization right now. One guy in charge wants Jones on the team, another guy in charge doesn't, for pretty much these reasons.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 30, 2007 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions

You have to at least admit
That Jones would be no worse than Vidro, the double play machine. Even if Jones hit .250, he'd hit so many more extra base hits it would prove to be an upgrade. Vidro is a sloth on the base paths, and one thing the M's could use is more speed on the bases.

Jones is so athletic that there is absolutely no way he would be worse than Broussard/Ibanez in LF.

by TheMarinator on Jun 30, 2007 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions

LF defense has been absolutely awful
and a huge part of why the pitching staff's looked so bad. Jones doesn't have to be a Gold Glover, he just has to be better than the Ibanez (and Broussard) black hole, which he is. He's taken huge strides defensively in Tacoma, and left field in Seattle is basically like center field anywhere else in terms of ground you have to cover, so it's a good fit.

I don't think there's any way that a Jones LF/Ibanez DH combination is worse overall than Ibanez LF/Vidro DH.

From a previous wrap-up
Brodie Downs is a 27 year old who pitched for Modesto Junior College last season.  After he finished high school, Downs worked as a land surveyor, but eventually decided to return to baseball.  The Mariners drafted him in the 23rd round this past June and, figuring his prospect status was about as bright as Roman Martinez's, added him to the bullpen in Tacoma this week to see what he had to offer.

Basically, bullpen filler at this point and they'll see over this season if he has a future.
