6/24: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 1:05pm PDT

Hatteberg 1B Ichiro CF Phillips 2B Lopez 2B Griffey RF Vidro DH Dunn LF Sexson 1B Encarnacion 3B Broussard RF Hamilton CF Beltre 3B Gonzalez SS Betancourt SS Valentin DH Burke C Ross C Ballgame LF ---------- ----------

Arroyo (2-8, 5.24)          Beluga Tits (7-6, 4.99)

There was a time when people thought that dealing Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena was a bad move for the Red Sox to make, but I'm pretty sure having an ERA over five in the NL should be grounds for forced retirement. This guy has one of the most unstable strikeout rates I've ever seen. Oh, and uh, go Batista.

Ibanez won't be in the lineup today as he rests his leg thing, so look for more Broussard. And Burke. It's nice to have a productive bench.

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

oh Wily Mo Pena
if he stopped winging with his eyes closed, he might become productive.

The man can hit the ball farther than anyone I've ever seen.

Uh....
What exactly did Griffey do?  He's not being an ass to Seattle fans, Seattle fans are just being dumb because they really like him.  As far as him hitting, well, we give up hits a lot and don't hate players just for getting hits.  I feel like this anti-Griffey sentiment that seems to be going on because so many people WANT to like Griffey, so you're obviously smarter and more sophisticated if you don't.  Okay, we get it, he's gone, and it's strange of the fans to boo the M's on his behalf.  But he still did a lot of good things for Seattle, so cut him some slack, it's not like he personally did anything wrong.

by BrettJMiller on Jun 24, 2007 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Okay, well by that logic
Why don't we boo Hideki Matsui, or Mark Teixeira, or Eric Chavez, or Grady Sizemore, or Shawn Green, or Carl Crawford, or any other player who gets hits against the Mariners?  You can be mad at the fans, but mad at Griffey?  He didn't do anything worse than any other player who has gotten hits against the Mariners.  Why should we hate him instead of other guys that do more damage to us on a more regular basis?

by BrettJMiller on Jun 24, 2007 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think there's as much a problem with Jr
himself, as the reaction of the fans to his presence.

After last Friday, you guys won't believe me
But I'm not as upset about the fans cheering Griffey's HRs as I was about them booing Feierabend.

Oh, it was shitty, and illustrates fundamental problems with the loyalty of our fanbase, but at least they were cheering an accomplishment from a road player they had come to see (even if it was an action that hurt the hometown nine)... rather than mercilessly booing one of our own players for doing his job properly.

It's one thing to cheer a player on the other team that they like, but another thing to boo your own players because he isn't enabling a player on the other team that they like.

Also, who else here thinks that the FO is seriously, after seeing this, and against common sense and reason (as if that's ever stopped them before), going to consider making a deal to bring the aged KGJ back?  And who else here thinks that Adam Jones is going to be the key piece?

Because if this team made a Griffey deal, I guanrandamntee you that the key piece from our end will be Adam Jones.

I agree with cheering the Griff
being ok.  I was there on Friday and couldn't stop laughing when they booed Ryan just because it was so absurd.  But The Kid means a lot to people around here and if the FO gave fans a better reason to care about the present we probably wouldn't be having this discussion.  And, even though I am as irrationally in love with the idea of Jr. back on the M's as anybody, if we trade Adam Jones for him I will charge onto the field and piss on home plate.

I completely agree
This year has been quite a bit of fun.  Especially compared to last year(s).  But I think the average fan's interest level, especially through June is based on last years results.  I think it's gonna take a pennant race in '07 for people to get jazzed for '08.

by BrettJMiller on Jun 24, 2007 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I would like to think so
We've seen the org do abrupt 180's before w/r/t its talent, but the right thing to do is make Adam Jones completely off-limits.

That's my worry, not that they don't consider AJ untouchable, but that this sentiment with KGJ will lead them to crack in that regard.

By the way
Doug Mirabelli made his return to San Diego last night. In case you forget why that's relevant:
The cranky catcher who was traded to Boston on May 1 after a .182 April is one of the central characters of the Padres' season.
...
"He called (Dave) Roberts (when Mirabelli was traded) and said, 'I guess I'm getting called back to the big leagues,' " Towers said before Monday's game with the Dodgers. "I'm glad I didn't hear that. . . . I don't miss him. These guys don't miss him."
...
When they were alone, Towers said, Mirabelli told him the Padres might want to start Bowen behind the plate against the Dodgers that day, "because I'm not focused on the game."

"I said, 'What?' " Towers recalled. "He said, 'My boys, the (Red) Sox have been calling me. I got to tell you, it's all I watch on TV; all I think about is the Red Sox. Do me a favor and you guys a favor (and make a deal)."
...
"I said, 'You're (expletive) catching today,' " Towers said. " 'Theo (Epstein) ain't paying you. I'm paying you.' . . . Then in the worst way, I wanted to trade him to the Yankees. In the worst way."

.840 OPS vs. RHP
.620 OPS vs. LHP.

Yeah, let's bring in a righty.  Nice job Grover.  JJ is the best righty, but still...WHY!?

by BrettJMiller on Jun 24, 2007 3:28 PM PDT reply actions

It's not real
over his career he doesn't have a platoon split at all (.688 vs .695 OPS).

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 24, 2007 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Ah.
I guess I just feel like if he's struggling even more than usual vs. LHP this year, why take the LHP out?  I trust JJ, but it just didn't seem like it was necessary at all to me.

by BrettJMiller on Jun 24, 2007 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, Gonzalez *is* a righty.
I think JJ has to give you better odds. Not a necessary move, but an understandable one.

Brewers have to be embarrassed.
This is how they allowed the winning run:

- J. Gathright walked, J. Buck scored, T. Pena Jr. to third, E. Brown to second

That seems like something the Royals
would lose doing--walking a crappy hitter like Gathright.  That might be the weirdest way to end a game ever.

They would've booed.
I think the love for Griffey is unparalleled.

by BrettJMiller on Jun 24, 2007 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions

No, they would have cheered
As they have cheered the entire series whether Griffey hits or gets out.

The only booeing of our home team was when the ball wasn't being thrown at home plate during his at bat, but instead being thrown at first base

The cheers covered over any substancial booeing during his strike outs...

All that matters to most of us is he got to play, hit, and flash his glove =)

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 24, 2007 5:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Tell me about it.
They're freaking SUING the team over the name.  It's the LA market, the team and the stadium haven't GONE anywhere, and they'd be perfectly happy to have an NFL team with LA in the moniker.  We have an owner who's willing to spend money to make the team perenially competitive and all they can think about is that people MIGHT think the Angels play across the county line.
