A few hours ago while sitting in the backyard I found myself really looking forward to this series. I thought, "hey, maybe there's something to this whole interleague thing after all." When else would I get to watch a game in Wrigley Field with a rooting interest? When else would I have the opportunity to watch Rich Hill and Ichiro, two of my favorite players in baseball, square off in a meaningful encounter? When else would I have the chance to maybe watch the Mariners on WGN and not have to deal with the painfully insufferable Hawk Harrelson?

Then I thought, "oh wait, no, it's because the Cubs are bad." Of course!

DEFENSE WATCH:

Mariners: -21 groundballs, -8 flyballs, -29 overall (sixth-worst in MLB)
Cubs: +3 groundballs, +18 flyballs, +21 overall (tied sixth-best in MLB)

(Numbers taken from THT, which calculates them based on expected outcomes from each team's balls in play. It's not a straight measure of defensive efficiency; it takes line drives and grounders and fly balls into account, meaning if a team's pitching staff is giving up a lot of screamers, they won't penalize the defense for it.)

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

Umm
Going back to Spring Training, wasn't our defense supposed to be one of the few bright spots this year?

Yeah, well
YuBet has 14 errors, and Guillen/Ibanez are pylons in the corners. Lopez, Ichiro, and Beltre can only do so much.

Pylons
By Pylons, who must obviously mean those made of concrete because the orange rubber ones at least have some flexibility to them.

Two Things
  1. I attended the Cubs' first visit to Safeco back in 2002. Prior pitched a shutout, and the Cubs won on a Sammy Sosa 3-run HR. I was convinced that this would be an important memory for me, having just seen what are sure to be two future HOFers performing. How times have changed.
  2. Browsing Bleed Cubbie Blue this morning, it looks like Cub fans are also looking forward to this series. They see us as a bad team, and they're hoping to go a combined 5-1 against us and Texas. Grrr.

I dunno, I just read through their game thread,
and the prevailing thought seems to be this is gonna be a "tough" series for them because we're on a roll.

The comments I saw were all from
yesterday.

"... their expected pitching rotation for the series (Washburn, Batista, Weaver) isn't that intimidating."

"We get the Mariners, without the King, and Texas. That is six games, and we our out five and a half. My prediction is we go 5 and 1, they go 2 and 4. We should be 2 and a half out by the end of the weekend."

You're right, though. The M's/Cubs game thread isn't bad.

by Katal LM on Jun 12, 2007 3:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Stats!
The Mariners currently have a team AB/K ratio of 7.65. This is the highest in the league (average is 5.33).

The Mariners currently have an AB/BB ratio of 14.63. This is also the highest in the league (average is 10.35).

It probably comes as no surprise that their P/PA is the lowest in baseball.

by Jeff on Jun 12, 2007 3:07 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Uh oh
Looking at the Cubs bullpen, there're a lot of bad pitchers in there who're going to give us trouble.

I can't quit laughing about
how good pitchers are almost a bonus for us, while the crap-ass pitchers are almost out worst nightmare.

A post from the BCB game thread:

Holy crap...
Sweet Lou's 2002 won 93 games and got THIRD in the AL West, while the winner of this year's NL Central will probably only need a winning record.

Eventually
the Brewers will realize how good they are again and will probably .600-ball their way to an easy NL Central title.  That division is so surprisingly bad.

I hope the wind's blowing out of Wrigley today... oh wait, Washburn's pitching.  I hope, if the wind's blowing out of Wrigley today, that Hill sucks more than Washburn.

While I like the Cubs
I hate the Chicago Bears. And what a stupid name they have. I can only imagine how the committee meaning went to decide on the title.

Guy 1: It's going to be tough to establish football around here. Chicago's a baseball town.

Guy 2: We need to prove to these people that football is just as good as baseball, if not better. That we're going to be bigger than the Cubs.

Guy 1: The Bears.

Guy 2: Awesome.

Well yes
but the Lakers were also originally in Minnesota where Lakers made sense.

Jazz were not always in Utah.

Some teams didn't want to go all Ravens or whatever.

by bluemax on Jun 12, 2007 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Although both the Lakers and Jazz
are transplated from places where their names makes sense, so in those cases the blame lies with the people who moved the teams and didn't bother to change their names.

by ningwers on Jun 12, 2007 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good point, New Orleans Jazz makes perfect
sense, as did the Lakers originally.

But some don't have to make sense as far as species location. Bears, Bengals, Lions, Raptors...  They're just powerful animals people named a team after.

Now Cubs I don't get. That would be like being the Kitties or something. Why name your team after a baby animal?

MLB 2K7 can be a retarded game.
I was robbed of 5 home runs, 4 by Moises Alou, 1 by Wily Mo Pena.  The last one would've been a walk-off.  Okay, we get it, you can rob homers in this game.  But you'd never see FIVE homers robbed in one game, especially not by crappy outfielders like that.

HORRIBLE GAME
God I hate MLB for selling their exclusive license to 2k sports (And I love 2k sports). MVP Baseball 05 was the best baseball game of all time.

by phil333 on Jun 12, 2007 4:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

2K7 isn't awful.
But for the most part, yeah, I agree.  Baseball Mogul is a lot of fun too.  MVP 05 is great with updates n PC, but I just needed a new console baseball game.  Still, 2K7 is too arcadey.  MVP was more of a sim...and I can't believe MLB was dumb enough to sell exclusive rights to Take 2 sports.

I was playing with my friend

After playing in two MLB 2k7 leagues
I sent the game back to gamefly. Most arcadey baseball game I've played in forever.

MLB The Show is pretty sweet though. I'm addicted to RTTS. 6'10" Roy Hobbs is tearing it up for AAA Tacoma. He'll force Raul out yet.

2 extreme groundballers going at it.
So how did the runs get scored for each team? On 2 homers of course(Abreu and Tracy).

WGN
We get WGN in Bmore but they're showing America's Funniest Pets instead of the game. Are the Cubs not on WGN anymore?

and in JUNE no less.
I want this team to win the division. The WC isn't something you should shoot for until September.
