6/11: Open Game Thread

ROSTER UPDATE: Reitsma right back to the DL, Jake Woods recalled. But remember, Rafael Soriano was criminally unreliable.

First Pitch: 4:05pm PDT

Ichiro CF Sizemore CF Vidro DH Michaels LF Guillen RF Blake 3B IbaƱez LF Hafner DH Johjima C Peralta SS Broussard 1B Garko 1B Beltre 3B Nixon RF Lopez 2B Barfield 2B Betancourt E-6 Shoppach C ---------- ----------

Baek (3-2, 4.91)            Byrd (6-2, 3.80)

With only four walks in 64 innings, Paul Byrd is arguably the most prolific strike-thrower in Major League Baseball. This is good news. The Mariner lineup is also way better against finesse pitchers than their more masculine peers (.773 OPS vs. finesse, .726 OPS vs. power), so maybe our odds are a little better today than most of us thought. Of course, Cha Baek could very easily get eaten alive by this lineup from Hell, and there's no JJ to save us at the end, but at least we might be able to keep up this time.

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

good news:
no matter what happens, the As and Angels can't win today.  Bad news: they also can't lose.

So if we lose, we're effectively tied with the As for third (.002 above them percentage-wise).  Let's go smiley!

In addition to going 18-for-18 in save opportunities, Putz is trying to bring a sense of unity and joyfulness in the Seattle clubhouse.

Okay, it has been brought to my attention
that most teams have this kind of finesse/power pitcher split. Uh. Well. Still, better Byrd than Sabathia, right?

Reitsma right back to the DL ?
What the hell is wrong with him now?

It's Chris Reitsma.
Even if it's the worst-case scenario, I'll have difficulty caring.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 11, 2007 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oddly enough, right after I asked what was wrong
I thought, "I don't really care"...

I'm mostly annoyed that Soriano was too big of a risk, but we sign a bunch of DL-riding assclowns like this.

another gem from our friend Jay over at LGT
about Ichiro's comment on Cleveland.

"Why should he be excited to go to Cleveland?  He gets reminded how crappy his team is in Cleveland."

Apparently 33-26 qualifies as crappy now.  The M's are also a fairly small 3 games behind Cleveland in the AL standings.

Im really starting to dislike the Indians fans (and the Indians team), they seem rather smug for people the root for Cleveland sports teams.

Seems like everywhere we go now,
these kind of comments are there to greet us. Do we ever talk this way about other teams? I think we're all too interested in the M's performance to berate the other teams.

Well with the Padres, almost all of it was just an
attempt to create some sort of actual rivalry between the two fan bases. It wasn't intentional. Jay however is just a fantastic douche.

This is why I'm really, really
hoping they just tee off of Byrd today. LGT is going to piss steam if they do, and I can already feel myself smiling as I read the post game interview with Byrd.
But then, its not too likely, so I'll try to not get my hopes up.

Man, Willie's really hitting for some power!
Yeah, off a guy that'll be bagging groceries in three weeks.

Don't hate me, but I actually liked ML2.  I liked how they had Vaughn turn into a paranoid yuppie and he spent the entire movie trying to re-figure out who he was.  I liked how President PalmERRRRR Cerrano became a pacifist Buddhist and lost all his motivation to play well.  And yes, I liked Rube Baker (who is pretty much the physical archetype of the WordUpThome character in the Dugout).  And I loved Bob Uecker's call of a HR off Rick Vaughn: ... oh shit.

Of course it was stupid.  The ML movies were made to be stupid!

Hi
Ben Broussard has been a surprisingly nice bat off the bench (even though he says he'll never get used to it).  Any contribution from him will be a plus.

by ThundaPC on Jun 11, 2007 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Glad to hear he's doing well with you!
when he was good he was very good, but when he was not-so-good it always felt like hitting my head against a wall repeatedly whenever he came up to bat. :)

by AngG on Jun 11, 2007 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dunno.
For a while there, the Benuardo platoon was pretty good, it seemed.  In Cleveland, that is, not so much in Seattle, for whatever reason.

I guess I have the same feeling towards Geoff Jenkins that you have towards Broussard.  I always pick him up for my fantasy team, get annoyed when he's on a down streak, but then there's always a time (like, say, this past week) where he hits a monster 3-run homer or grand slam on Sunday to win me TB and RBI out of nowhere.  And then I'm all happy... until the next time he's not-so-good.

by Deanna on Jun 11, 2007 3:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i keep forgetting to put on subjects. whups!
we had ben for a while before that, and he was frustratingly streaky in 2005. i'm not sure why benuardo was so much better in cleveland vs. seattle aside from "they were overplaying in cleveland the first half of the year and law of averages once they got to seattle, blah blah."

Anyone else
more excited and comfortable with the bottom third of our lineup producing lately than any other part (besides Ichiro of course).  It seems like everytime the middle of the order comes up and we need a basehit they end up walking back to the dugout with a bat in hand...but if the bottom of the order is up I have all sorts of confidence.

Despite my opponent having A-Rod and a lineup that just blew up during the week, I was only down 8-7 going into Sunday and then SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY... I lost 12-4 and dropped from 2nd to 5th place.

My public H2H team went 0-fer on the 2nd week of the season.  They still haven't recovered: they're in 9th place out of 12 and 15 back.  And don't even mention my roto squad.

Betancourt needs to just play shallow

He came back.  He was not okay.  He got sent back down.

The only situation where there's an imposed time limit is when you get sent to AAA (10 days minumum after demotion) or the DL (15 or 60 days depending on which DL).  If you get called up, you can get sent back wherever at any time afterward given the team is technically allowed to send you to the minors/DL.

Well, that will make him a pretty reliable 5th starter since to do that the rest of the way he will only have to post like a 4.75 ERA.

Then, what do you do with Horacio Ramirez when he comes off the DL? You don't boot Baek out of the rotation. That would just be fucking stupid. Do they put him in the bullpen, or just do away with him altogether finalizing the HoRam/Soriano trade as a top 3 worst in Mariner history?

You have a guy in the minors (Ryan F.) that is the same kind of pitcher HoRam with better stuff. So you trade your second best reliever for HoRam. This has been talked to death, but everytime I think about it I want to choke somebody in the Mariners FO.

He's passed Betancourt now, and has a .987 through 42 June ABs.  Maybe he's back again?  It seems like Raul does the opposite of what we expect.  We've said he was done for two years now, then he goes all 2006 on us.  Then we say he'll be good, and he looks like shit for a few months, so we hate on him again.  Then he hits 3 HRs in 3 games...what the fuck Raul?
