Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

5/15: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 7:05pm PDT

Willits LF Ichiro CF Figgins 3B Vidro DH Cabrera SS Ibanez LF Matthews CF Sexson 1B Kotchman 1B Guillen RF Hillenbrand DH Beltre 3B Izturis 2B Johjima C Napoli C Betancourt SS Murphy RF Lopez 2B ---------- ----------

Escobar (4-1, 2.21)         King Felix (2-1, 1.56)

So, the best pitcher in baseball is on a 70-80 pitch count tonight, but against the second most over-aggressive lineup in the AL (we're number one! we're number one!), I figure that'll be good for ten or eleven innings. Happy Felix day?

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

A win tonight
would be so huge!

We'd finally win 2 in a row again.
We'd close the gap with Anaheim significantly.
We'd set the tenor of the series.
We'd get to see Felix dominate again (the awful taste of his last start still lingers!)
We'd beat one of Anaheim's studs (maybe he's tired after tossing a shut out in CLE.)

I just moved into a different apartment and so my stuff is only half unpacked. Because I was running late this morning I didn't grab my Felix tshirt to wear :(

Shows...
In the end we'd settled on planning to go see Modest Mouse, except failed to get tickets before they sold out, and I left town before Jarvis Cocker arrived (natch!)...

... so hung out in Kent quite a bit, and I saw two shows in Chicago en route anyway.

Might be popping out again at the end of July to see Rufus Wainwright at the Moore if I can be clever with my timings...

I wrote a little diary of my two games at Safeco, but never posted it at the risk of stealing EM's thunder. Will have to get around to doing that soon enough.

Val Pascucci is playing baseball again?
He's 29 but he was a monster for me in Baseball Mogul.  Already got 11 HRs and OPSing over .900 in AAA...someone should give him a shot.

by BrettJMiller on May 15, 2007 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Funny thing
The last record that Baseball Cube has of Val Pascucci's existence is a late season callup with Montreal in 2004.

A further look shows he spent the last two years coming off the bench for NPB's Chiba Lotte Marines.  The second season did not go as well as the first.

2006 Highlights: Spent second-straight season with the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan... batted .222 in 69 games with Chiba Lotte, hitting 13 home runs and driving in 32 runs.

Career Highlights:
2005: Played in 33 games for the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan... batted .284 with eight home runs and 20 runs driven in... compiled a .549 slugging percentage and a .392 on-base average.

While it looks like a comeback for old Val, who is seriously mashing right now... remember that he plays his home games in Aubuquerque, and he's hitting 177/284/435 on the road.  He's the textbook all or nothing hitter.

It's because Scoscia suspended him at the end of 2004 for no real reason, despite the fact that he was having a good year.  Apparently, they had some fight in the clubhouse or something and Guillen ended up on the losing end.  He feels like Scoscia ran him out of town and has since vowed to beat the crap out of the Angels for the rest of time...hence, he's my new favorite Mariner!

Cat's out of the bag...

Felix has been told to use the slider sparingly and to focus on establishing both the four-seam and two-seam fastballs early in the count, even more than usual.

I was thinking more along the lines of starters.
It seems like we have a ton of "marginal stuff" guys in the system.

But Sherrill is a great example of not "great" stuff, but very successful. Isn't he able to succeed due to a somewhat funky delivery though?

"Dammit monster, I ain't givin you no treefiddy!"

by Thingray on May 15, 2007 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Washburn's stuff is pretty marginal.
So is Ho's, although Ho sucks. Feierabend's is one tick above.

Sherrill's delivery may have something to do with his success, but I think it all starts with his solid fastball command. Once he gets ahead, then that sweeping slurve becomes a major weapon.

Is the Braves spring training ballpark.

The Rays are trying to regionalize their franchise, i.e. expand interest beyond the Tampa-St. Pete area.  They're playing these games in Orlando, and also they will soon be moving their own spring training games out of St. Pete (Port Charlotte, I think, which is maybe 100 miles south of St. Pete).

Escobar Vs. Hernandez
I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see Felix pitch a perfect game. Escobar has been our perennial bad luck pitcher, he gets no run support even against bad pitchers. Against someone like Felix, I could easily see a repeat of that 2-0 game last year. My one reason for hope rests on Reggie Willits. Willits can work the count and make guys throw 6-8 pitches, and does so with amazing regularity. If the Halos work the count, we can knock Felix out by the start of the 7th inning because of the pitch count. We won't have scored any runs, but we'll have 2 innings to get something done before Putz comes in and we're ****ed again.

Both ...
... are often given up for dead only to miraculously revive themselves.
... are often detrimental to their team's cause.
... have their best work sabotaged by a teammate (see Mateo, J.).

Just getting a day off. If you're going to sit your best player, you might as well do it when you're virtually assured of losing anyway.

by Jeff Sullivan on May 15, 2007 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Whew
That's a relief. Like I said before, Escobar never gets run support anyway. Having Vlad out of the lineup and Figgins hitting second just means we're assured of scoring no runs, as opposed to the slight possibility that Vlad will randomly crush a pitch at his shins and 3 inches inside.

Comical
The preview show plays the theme "welcome back" and shows a highlight reel of Felix.

They also showed Felix leaving in the Minnisota game followed by HoRam and Weaver getting clobbered (complete with Weaver's baffled look) by Boston.  Then they show clips of Felix again.

VERRY deep league, every starter in the MLB is on a team.

Great job, crowd.
Which team is winning by eight again?

by Jeff Sullivan on May 15, 2007 9:55 PM PDT reply actions

I turned the game off a while ago
but I just checked the box score. Needless to say, the only thing that made me happier than the score was seeing Willie back in center, the position he helped to define during the mid-2006 season.

Two above .500 again
can we get that elusive 3rd game above .500?

Tony Pena Jr. is 4 for 4
Well, that's embarassing for Oakland.

What is the deal with umpires?
Take the worst possible position? Seriously. why wouldn't you want to be directly behind homeplate, you know, the position you stand at for 3 hours.

by hcoguy on May 15, 2007 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I fucking hate the A's
My hatred for them is of even more passion than my hatred for the Yankees. Although I would take the A's over the Yankees in the playoffs.

by dz on May 15, 2007 10:55 PM PDT reply actions

My best friend is an A's fan
He has been insufferable the last three years. This is lucky win #3 for Oakland already this year (Scutaro off of Rivera, come on). Seriously, a team with that many injuries has no business being over .500. yeah, the pitching I know, but still, this game just ruined the high from spanking the Angels.

This is a bizarre game thread.
I can't even quite tell when the game ended.

Of course, to be fair, at Safeco, it came down to 2 outs in the ninth inning, and I stood up, and I'm like "HELLO PEOPLE IT'S THE LAST OUT", and everyone's kinda like "Oh... hey, yeah, it is."

And yes, EnglishMariner never showed up as far as we know.  I mean, we had a blast anyway -- even a funk blast at that -- but that was pretty bizarre.

Katal's GF
introduced herself to me as chopped liver.

I was thinking to myself, hmm... I've never seen someone post under that handle...

How about the GIDP Twins?
Jose and Raul

or the Announcement of the defensive replacement in CF

or Goose's Jose Guillen

I think I had more fun than I should be allowed to have at a Mariners game tonight.

According to HH
Some Angel fans got kicked out for cheering too loud. Best game ever confirmed.

That was you guys
booing Bloomquist?

I was sitting about ten feet away. When I heard the boos, I figured it must be someone from the blogging community. Small world.

If you look around the table and you can't tell who the sucker is, and then you see Bill Bavasi, it's him.

Why didn't you come say hello, asshat? :(

I wasn't certain that it was
a Lookout Landing group. If I'd introduced myself as Rollo Tomasi to a bunch of people not affiliated with LL, it would have been weird. Sorry.

Funny thing
We kept looking around for EnglishMariner, and every time we saw a guy in a Felix jersey, someone would randomly scream ENGLISH MARINER!!! to see if he'd respond.

We were all in section 320, row 15 or so.
So if you were near there, and heard boos, then that was, indeed us.  But I'm surprised you didn't hear the REST of it (like the LET'S GO TURBO chants and so on)

I rather enjoyed "JA-SON DAVIS!
clap clap clap-clap-clap JA-SON DAVIS!"

As well as the GIDP twins and Bloomquist boos...what was not to like about tonight?  Haha.

Ah Jason Davis
"Jason Davis tanked the month of April..."

confused looks "...because he wanted to come to Seattle..."

more confused looks "...TO WIN THE 2007 WORLD SERIES!!!"

That was funny
Not necessarily because my brain bled the first time you said it, but it was funny.

I spent much of the game
apologizing to my Oakland fan friend who I convinced to dole out $10 to watch The Return of The King only to see him get taken out in the fourth inning of a blowout. Also, we moved a couple of times in order to avoid a group of annoying 10 year-olds.

Did you see the guy on HH
dissing the Funk Blasts? Tragic. Reading that sight is like watching the black and white scenes in American History X.

if not hypocritical.
How good are you at answering direct questions, on a scale of 1 to 10? I'd say I'm very good.

We need to stay in contention late into the season
and Felix needs to keep dominating without getting hurt. That'll get fan interest back.
