Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

4/6: Open Game Thread

1:20pm update: start time's been pushed back to 2:00pm PDT, but whether or not it actually happens is still up in the air. Tomorrow's game was pushed up to 10:05am, instead of 4:05pm. See Geoff Baker's blog for details.

First Pitch: 1:05pm PDT?

Ichiro CF Sizemore CF Beltre 3B Michaels LF Vidro "DH" Hafner MVP Ibanez LF Martinez C Sexson 1B Blake RF Guillen RF Garko 1B Johjima C Peralta SS Betancourt SS Barfield 2B Lopez 2B Marte 3B ---------- ----------

Ho (0-0, -.--)         Byrd (0-0, -.--)

We'll see if this thing actually takes place - Cleveland already had some minor league affiliates snowed out, so keep an eye on Let's Go Tribe for the weather report. If we do end up having a game, it'll be, uh, well, Cleveland just put up a .963 OPS in three games against the White Sox, so I guess the closer the temperature gets to absolute zero, the better, since the only time the Mariner lineup can approximate Cleveland's is when both are rendered incapable of swinging the bat.

Grady Sizemore
has balls of steel. You can hear them clang as he swings. Luckily, the cold weather should make things awkward for him.
The trouble is, as USSM pointed out, Travis Hafner alone drew as many walks in two games as the mariners in three.
Then again, the mariners faced A's pitching in relatively warm weather, while the Indians faced a disintegrating Sox staff in the frigid circle of hell which the locals call Ohio.
Conclusion: Ho Ram will get knocked around but give the Cleveland lineup some kind of clap in the process, making them too itchy and 'uncomfortable' to swing the bat well against Weaver.

by Bearskin Rugburn on Apr 6, 2007 8:23 AM PDT reply actions

That's it!
Give Joh some magnets!  That's slow Grady down.

Just make sure he's not holding them in his hands when Sizemore comes up, because, well...

by Gomez on Apr 6, 2007 9:08 AM PDT up reply actions

And technically,
Hafner got all 4 walks in one game, meaning he got as many BBs in a couple of hours of work as the M's got in three games.

Yeah
Like you'd give Pronk a pitch to hit.

by Gomez on Apr 6, 2007 9:15 AM PDT up reply actions

But what about Willie?
If they play today that means we get to see Willie's first start since Betancourt is in court today.  You know Willie will be out on the field today for 9 regardless whether they play the official game or not! - That's how dedicated he is.

Also, given Weaver's history against good lefties.  Is anyone else concerned with a potential fireworks show tomorrow.  Sizemore, Nixon, Hafner, Martinez, and Dellucci.  We'll see how that change into the left handed hitter works out.

by Safeco Hobo on Apr 6, 2007 8:25 AM PDT reply actions

He'd probably have a better time
beaning every LH batter he faces.  I mean a walk isn't as bad as a HR.

The real question is how far they are going to go.  I say he gives up a shot that goes 448 ft.

I can't remember the physics involved...
But don't the longest homeruns come off 90's fastballs? I am probably wrong but I remember reading or hearing something about it along long long time ago. I think it was right around the time Mark Mc hit that absolute monster off of Randy in the Kingdome.

Speaking of Mac vs. RJ in the 'Dome...
I was at that game, and let's not forget that RJ had 19 Ks that night.  And lost.

Up until Monday, that was the best pitching performance I'd ever seen in person.  Felix on Opening Day, however, just bumped that game off the top...

Back then, I was in Vegas and remember ESPN

The only RJ start I ever made it to
Was his no-hitter against the Tigers in the Kingdome back in June of 1990.

I just remember alot of people not realizing what was going on because Randy was walking everyone that night. There were Tigers all over the basepaths.

By the 8th inning though the Kingdome was rocking. I still have my tickets stubs for that game.

Ah memories....

I got a foul ball hit by Griffey that evening, too.

Felix is at the top in nearly all categories in the early leader board.  He leads the league with 12 K's this early in the season with Dice-K two SO behind.  However, Dice-K leads the league in SO/Walk ratio with Felix two spots behind.

Great point
by exileincincy at Let's Go Tribe:

I don't know much about how schedules are constructed but this makes no sense. There a plently of warm weather franchises, so why can't the April schedule be tilted in that direction? Wouldn't it make a lot of sense for Tampa to host a lot of early season games, for example. I think extreme weather heightens injury risk and MLB is taking unnecessary risks by scheduling early April games up north.

I don't get it either.  It really isn't rocket science to put more early series in the warmer south, or with north teams who play in climate controlled stadia.  I know that this would mean precious few series in April for some teams, but with the weather in the 20's and 30's, I think their fans would be cool with that (HA COOL WITH THAT SEE WHAT I DID THERE).

by Gomez on Apr 6, 2007 12:47 PM PDT reply actions

It strikes me as odd
That Vidro has made more outs than he has at-bats.

This means that, so far, we'd have been better off having an automatic out as our DH in the 3-hole. Yaaaaay Vidro.

by Graham MacAree on Apr 6, 2007 12:58 PM PDT reply actions

I admit it
Right now, at this point, I'd rather have Mike Morse at DH than Vidro.

by Gomez on Apr 6, 2007 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions

As I said on Baker's blog.
I'd rather have Bucky.

I'd bet that even with his bum knee, Bucky'd outrun Vidro in a foot race.  And, his strikeouts and flyouts would do much less damage in the 3-hole than Vidro's GIDPs...

Iceberg, right ahead!

by PositivePaul on Apr 6, 2007 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Hey, speaking of Bucky
Geoff Baker ran into him during his flight to Cleveland.  Bucky's on his way to play for a team in the Mexican League.

One side benefit of taking the Seattle-Houston-Cleveland route today is that the guy sitting in the row just opposite mine was none other than Bucky Jacobsen. Haven't seen him since researching that profile we ran back in January. Spoke on the phone with him a couple of times and he told me he'd been dissed by the Japanese League, turned down by Korea and was hoping to play in Mexico. Well, the Mexican thing apparently fell through as well until yesterday morning, when Jacobsen got a 7 a.m. phone call from a team in Tobasco (yes, they're on a real hot streak -- ha! ha!). It's the Tobasco Olmecas, if you must know. Tobasco is a southern Mexican state on the Gulf Coast. Anyway, turns out that team has already played about a dozen games, but is in need of Jacobsen ASAP. He didn't bother asking why, has no idea if someone got hurt. But he was on today's 7:55 a.m. flight to Houston, then off to Mexico from there.

He booked so quickly they stuck him in a coach class middle seat. A flight attendant was able to switch him to a window, completely freaking out the 3-year-old girl who'd been sitting in the middle with her mother on the aisle. The girl was obviously terrified at the sight of a 6-foot-7, 270-pound behemoth moving in next to her, but Jacobsen handled it in stride, the Mom switched to the middle seat for takeoff and everyone calmed down within minutes. I'd have helped out, but, well, I had the opposite aisle seat. No way I'm giving that up, even for a nice guy like Jacobsen. He watched some of the last three games at Safeco on television, but admits it gets hard at times. He's trying to look forward, not back. This stint in Mexico was about as tough as it can be for a former major-leaguer to land a playing job. But he's making the best of it. Same guy. Wearing a T-shirt, shorts and carrying a duffel bag. He told me to pass along good wishes to former Tacoma teammate George Sherrill and he knows that many of you -- through your emails -- wished him good luck when we ran our story two months ago.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 6, 2007 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions

The problem when I saw them
was that they were sandwiched between Metric and Franz Ferdinand, so the crowd was pretty much dead when they were on stage. This in conjection to (ugh) the Mars Volta almost ruining System of A Down live, proved to me how important an opening act is. That being said Tenacious D had a terrible comedian open for them and they still rocked my socks off.

by Robert on Apr 6, 2007 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Neil Hamburger
Is the D's comedian...he was in the movie.  They use him as a purposely bad comedian to get the crowd fired up for the D...I heard a rumor they're going to use the Seattle performance I was at (night 2) for the concert DVD...that would be rad....

Can't say I'm a huge fan of System of a Down, but aside from De-Loused in the Comatorium which was Brilliant, and the Tremulant EP, Mars Volta has been pretty much crap.  They're god awful live, and I've heard they get offended when you bring up At the Drive-In, a much better band.

I reccomend going to a lot of small little intimate shows.  I got into a lot of good bands like The Look, Bear vs. Shark, Fear Before the March of Flames, Since By Man, The Fall of Troy, Tera Melos, etc.  That's if you like hardcore bands...  I definitely suggest The Unicorns, Islands, Mon Frere, and Minus the Bear if you'd like something a little softer...

Sorry for ranting guys.  I love my music.

I think the rule change only involved postponement procedures for games past 5 innings where a visiting team took the lead from the home team and the inning wasn't able to be completed.

Give HoRam a break just this once...
Have the guys tearing into HoRam ever tried pitching in the freezing cold/snow?  He should have got out of that inning scoreless if the D would have been better.  It's too early to judge how badly he sucks from this one freak game which simply should not have been started in the present conditions.  I doubt he will be able to feel his fingers properly which will impact his breaking ball, and cold weather = poor velocity on the fastball.

I'm getting real tired of the Indians
announcers acting like getting Lopez out and making the game official is just a formality.  I could begin to understand the feeling if the Indians were up by 10 and noone was on base, but only up by 4 with the bases loaded?  There are definitely limits to the amount of homerism I can stand.

If I'm Grover, then I don't allow my players . . .
to take the field.

As soon as the inning ends, they're going to call it. This is total BS.

by JoeyJoJoJuniorShabadoo on Apr 6, 2007 5:08 PM PDT reply actions

He would be totally justified
in claiming that he was worried about his players being injured, all he would have to do is point to V-Mart as evidence.

How stupid do you have to be
to not cancel this game? I think we're talking Johnny Drama level at this point.

by Rollo Tomasi on Apr 6, 2007 5:09 PM PDT reply actions

I think the potential lost opening day revenue
is the most convincing argument I've heard as to why they won't cancel it.  It's BS if the umps are even considering it...

by ningwers on Apr 6, 2007 5:14 PM PDT up reply actions

What money is being lost???
Most fans have left at this point anyways
Go M's

I thought that might be the case
but I'm not sure if would offer refunds or simply say the old tickets are valid for the new game (or either one, I suppose).

by ningwers on Apr 6, 2007 5:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Good point
that would explain by they wouldn't initially cancel it, but now it's simply a case of wanting the win.

by ningwers on Apr 6, 2007 5:20 PM PDT up reply actions

cmon...
its perfect.  You've sold lots of hot dogs, hot cocoa, and coffee and made tons of money.  NOw you can cancel the game, have another date, and do it all again :)

They're not cancelling . . .
because it's opening day. If this was Cleveland's second series at home, they would have cancelled this hours ago.

by JoeyJoJoJuniorShabadoo on Apr 6, 2007 5:13 PM PDT reply actions

It IS stupid
I'm just writing on why this game wasn't cancelled hours ago. It's truly pathetic that they have allowed this "game" to "continue."

by JoeyJoJoJuniorShabadoo on Apr 6, 2007 5:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Aren't the new rules
That makeup games start in the same situation they ended?  Or am I crazy?

by Garces on Apr 6, 2007 5:18 PM PDT reply actions

Only applies to ties
after five innings. An unofficial game is still unofficial.

by Rollo Tomasi on Apr 6, 2007 5:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it's an
official game after 4 1/2 innings, which is why the Indians want to get one more out.

by JoeyJoJoJuniorShabadoo on Apr 6, 2007 5:19 PM PDT up reply actions

The Indians announcers . . .
are even hinting that his game is over after this half-inning.

Seriously, I'm at a loss of words . . .

by JoeyJoJoJuniorShabadoo on Apr 6, 2007 5:18 PM PDT reply actions

Snelling started today
cool.

And Byrnes is leading off for Oakland?

by bluemax on Apr 6, 2007 5:21 PM PDT reply actions

I wonder what the Indians would be rooting for
if Beltre hadn't made the errors and it was 0-0.

by Matthew on Apr 6, 2007 5:27 PM PDT reply actions

If Lopez does the impossible
And hits a home run, watch all of us change our minds about calling the game

by Robert on Apr 6, 2007 5:28 PM PDT reply actions

why?
that just ties the game and would just suspend the game instead of canceling it.

by Matthew on Apr 6, 2007 5:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I was going off the assumption
That it would be canceled, not suspended. I stand corrected.

by Robert on Apr 6, 2007 5:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I won't
This is just dumb, and dangerous.

Up above I even said that if Lopez and Ichiro hit back to back jacks, I still would have wanted this game called earlier, like before the game.

They are gonna try in 15 minutes. If they can't do it,then its gonna be called, and be replayed in its entirety.

by Robert on Apr 6, 2007 5:30 PM PDT reply actions

come on snow
one more prolonged burst of snow and the umps would pretty much have to cancel the game.

They'd better work faster if they're going to do it

by ningwers on Apr 6, 2007 5:31 PM PDT reply actions

2 hours and 36 minutes

That's longer than the time of actual play.

No it doesn't
because we had a day off yesterday, so everyone got an extra day of rest. Felix pitches the nightcap tomorrow on 4 days' rest.

by JoeyJoJoJuniorShabadoo on Apr 6, 2007 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Blessing in disguise?
However you feel about him, presumably one accepts that he's not one of the two best pitchers on the starting rotation. Thereby skipping over him for a game that counts means more games from the better guys.

In addition, if that second game gets played tomorrow, it'll be the Indians' #1 and #2 starters and the Mariners' #5 and #1 starters who should be somewhat more prepared having had longer rests.

dont need to call in anybody
off day yesterday so rotation is intact and the bullpen will have had 2 days off

by Matthew on Apr 6, 2007 5:47 PM PDT up reply actions

You could make an argument for using Felix
given that it'll 5 days since his last start, but he may have planned his weekly routine around a start on Sunday

Wow.
Hargrove just jumped up about 3 notches up on my "hey, he's not bad" list.

Still, they should've called the game several hours ago.  Sorry fantasy owners, too.  I hope that Victor is seriously hurt and misses a ton of games just so those lame Cleveland announcers recognize just that.  Being upset about losing the victory should really be tempered by the reality that losing Victor should upset them even moreso.

Shoot. No. That didn't come out right.
I hope he's not hurt, definitely.  But I just want them to recognize WHY the game should not have been played in the first place.

Those aren't baseball conditions.  Football, perhaps. Definitely NOT baseball.

I'm thankful there weren't any more injuries.

Iceberg, right ahead!

by PositivePaul on Apr 6, 2007 6:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I realize that
and agree with your sentiment.  I also don't think that umpires should make decisions with the goal of getting 4 1/2 innings in.  They should be true to the game and look for nine.

That being said, if I'm an Indians fan right now, I'm pissed.

IT'S A MIRACLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I TAKE BACK AT LEAST 23.6% OF ALL THE BAD THINGS I HAVE EVER SAID ABOUT MIKE HARGROVE but not all of them because that's be ridiculous and he's still Dudley Dumbass BUT STILL.

God hatred edge: Mariners
The Indians at least have spent the last couple of years with a competitive ballclub and they have great hitters like Victor, Grady and Pronk.

by Gomez on Apr 6, 2007 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions

It has to be said
and I know many will strongly disagree with this sentiment:

Mike Hargrove just took a big step towards saving his job today.

by Gomez on Apr 6, 2007 7:03 PM PDT reply actions

I agree that Hargrove did something
heroically good. However, I don't think there's any chance he keeps his job at the end of the year, regardless of the M's final record.

Oh, he still has a lot of work to do
Remember, though, last year we were absolutely certain he was gone after the season....

completely different
not firing a guy when you'd still have to pay him no matter what is in another universe from giving him a new contract.

That's like arguing back in October that Gil Meche would be back in 2007 because we didn't cut him after his shitty 2005.

by Matthew on Apr 6, 2007 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Remember Tiananmen Square
when that one guy stood in front of the tanks?

Basically, the baseball equivalent of that.  With Jose Lopez up and completely unable to see the ball, down 1-2 in the count, Grover came out and pitched a fit, then refused to leave the field.  The umps finally took the hint as the snow started falling harder, and stopped play.

by Gomez on Apr 6, 2007 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I picture some guy
with glasses running frantically into the dugout waving a stack of weather reports saying that more snow is coming.  Some sort of nerdy slow motion attempt to save the game.  Then a panting 1 second conversation saying that "The snow is coming, the snow is coming" after which Hargrove runs onto the field doing his best to stall.
