9-10, 10-10

There's really no graceful way to say this, so I'll just put it out there and be done with it - no baseball watching or baseball writing gets done on Spring Weekend. I'm going to sleep for a while.

baek
maybe grover will do the right thing and take the god awful mess otherwise known as jeff weaver off this team. baek seems like a decent 5th starter. and even if he blows, it won't be anything like this weaver asshole

Spring Weekend?
Is this an event or will this be an every-weekend thing?

by Gomez on Apr 29, 2007 9:28 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Seconded
What is this "spring weekend" of which you speak, and where can I get one?

With four term papers due in the next nine days, both this weekend and next weekend are "taking it in the tailpipe weekends" for me.

Annual event.
I'd tell you what happened yesterday but (A) I don't really remember, and (B) Coach Owens might yell at me.

Well
Can't blame you for A but according to the horse's mouth himself, B is AWOL effective immediately.

egad!
Morrow's getting thrown in at the key moments... Whether he gets a look as a starter or not, one could argue that having Mateo or Reitsma pitch Morrow's innings would have likely resulted 8-12. I'm just saying, y'know, its not all for nothing.

By the way, I see a lot of baseball players with these funny ___-sma last names. Anyone know what that is? Lithuanian? Hungarian?

by Bearskin Rugburn on Apr 29, 2007 9:29 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The name is Dutch
Reitsma himself was born in the States and raised in Canada.

rabble
Weaver is looking like one of the bigger mistakes made.  8.35 mil is alot of money. hargrove and bavasi could have put 350,000 on the ground in 20's and 100's and rolled around naked together, then burn the money while giggling like school girls had 8 million left and still have gotten 1 or 2 better pitchers with it.

Jeff Weaver
From our standpoint, he was essentially free. Just because his craptacularness has made everyone forget why doesn't make that any less true.

I don't know if this has been discussed..
Why is Morrow going only from the stretch, no wind up?  Just curious as i have never seen his wind up before

by mutt1823 on Apr 29, 2007 10:15 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Its not as big of a deal as some people make of it
Bobby M pitch from the stretch the entire game even though he started.

But most relief guys just pitch out of the stetch because most of the time they inherit runners

Shop smart......Shop s-mart...... YOU GOT THAT!!!!

i am used to
relievers doing it, its understandable considering they have to 80% of the time
But since he is a developing starter, thought he would still want to go from the wind up

I shot a bunch of pictures of him today.  It's almost impossible to catch him in motion because he's so damn fast and has no windup.

Yay for .500
But this is going to be a hell of a week. 2 vs. Chicago, then 1 at Boston and 4 at the Yanks. Please Yankees please don't break out of the slump yet.

In fact the next three weeks are going to suck. The only below .500 team we play between now and May 20th is the Yankees.

Finals for my whole degree
My first two years don't count for anything (which, on reflection, is a good thing), so these 10 exams + 2 projects which I do afterwards entirely determine the class mark for my B.A.

Had computational neuroscience this morning, only 8 to go...

I'm not freaking out. At all. :(

Why are you taking so many classes?
Is that normal there?  I think 6ish classes is normal over here.  10 would kill most people, at least at the university I attended.

Also, my birthday is exactly one week from today, and so this reminds me of how EVERY year of college, I ALWAYS had finals on my birthday, which sucked.  My birthday parties were always like "I'm baking a cake!  Come take a break from studying for exams and help me eat it!"

3 or 4 classes per quarter is standard.

It's normal for 3rd year engineers
We have 4 exams first year, 8 second, 10 in third and 6 in our Masters year.

Everyone else stays around 5 most of the time. CUED just likes being special, I guess.

Yeah know, sometimes when I read this site and
you guys start to talk about your college courses and whatnot, I start to feel really stupid because it seems like I'm the only one here who decided not to go to college after high school.
No sir, I don't like it. ~Mr.Horse

by Goose on Apr 30, 2007 2:29 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Why should you feel stupid?
Seriously, having an education does not equal being smart. You're one of the more intelligent commenters on this blog, so it doesn't matter whether you dropped out after the 2nd grade, or have three doctorate degrees. I think we can all tell you're an intelligent guy.
I reject your reality and substitute my own!

by Phildopip on Apr 30, 2007 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

1/2 a year of community college
Then I dropped out when it was summertime and all my friends were out having a great time and I was stuck in class. I never went back.

Spent many years doing construction jobs, then finally moved on to doing accounting. Had to start at the bottom, and work my way up, but it's still a good job.

My lack of college education doesn't make me any less intelligent. In fact, I know plenty of people with college degrees that barely know how to tie their own shoes (and make less money than I do)!

So don't feel stupid Goose. Everyone has their own path to follow.

"Dammit monster, I ain't givin you no treefiddy!"

Thank you for giving me hope
I'm crashing and burning at CC but yet remain the only person in the history of my high school to pass the AP history exam after being the class for just 5 weeks.

Intelligence isn't dependent on a college eduction but that defiently shouldn't take anything away from people that do go to college. For some, it just isn't them.

It's a matter of choice
School does not define you. YOU define you. As one of the core commenters on the blog, you've repeatedly shown yourself to be an intelligent, entertaining, and generally all-round good dude. Don't believe otherwise. Education is a path we take, not the ends.

by Graham on Apr 30, 2007 11:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.
I've liked college alot and I think its taught me alot about how to think and approach problems but its not for everybody.  I've seen thousands of students who shouldn't be in college because they don't care.  I don't think college is benefiting these people at all and is just draining their bank account (or usually in this case their parents').  I think it really depends on the person.  I think many people are better off not going to college as long as they can find something that makes them happy or makes them enough money depending on what they are looking for.  All that being said, if I have kids I'll probably force them to go to college so take that above commentary from somebody that might be a little hypocritical in my own life.

Oh yeah almost forgot the most important part.  I've met some of the stupidest people I know at college.  They are first off not bright people and I'm surprised that the can write, read, or survive.  The worst part is that they think they are smart because the are going to college.  College really doesn't make you smart.  It may teach you a lot of theories but its up to the person to incorporate these into how they think about the world.  I would say most people never really think enough to do this and are as smart when the leave college as when they arrived.

by Edgar for Pres on May 1, 2007 8:07 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

My $.02
College is more what you learn outside of class than what you learn in class.  At least it was for me.  My German degree is really helping me succeed at life.  Rrrright. I probably would've been better off pursuing my photography degree after all.  To be fair, though, I gave up on my Ed degree and fell back on German, when I had to get some sort of BA to speak for my 6 years of college...

Of course, the Web was just in its infancy back then, and I didn't want to get a Comp. Sci. degree, so that was a choice I made.  Fortunately, I learned enough about web programming and other stuff that I was able to get a job doing web stuff anyway.

In many cases, a college degree is more a sign that someone can jump through certain hoops and stick with it.  Even extended degrees (masters, PhDs, etc...) can display this.

Yeah, having a degree helps.  I won't deny that -- it's a tangible sign that a person has had some success.  But by no means does a lack of a degree signify stupidity on someone's behalf.  There are so many other factors (money, health, family) that influence people's decisions to complete college, and people who haven't attended college can be just as intelligent as people who have.

It's these hotshot smarty pants folks like Jeff, Graham, Deanna, and others that make college-educated me feel stupid, too!  So, yeah, you're not alone in feeling stupid.  My college degree isn't really worth shit, and, unlike Deanna, I'm still paying off my college loans, and I've been out of college for a decade now.

Pray for Felix. Pray for the M's!
