Weaver (0-2, 15.75)         Santana (1-2, 7.63)

Don't worry guys, Jeff Weaver won't be deterred by his awful start. If you thought he was so weak-willed that he'd try to fix the problems that came up over his first two starts, well, you've got another thing coming.

"You may be tempted to add something or do something different," he said, "but staying in the same routine and working on the things that got you here is the best approach to take."

Of course, that dumbshit 86mph two-seamer isn't what got Weaver here. What got Weaver here was the success he had throwing 92mph heaters in the World Series. But what do I know? I'm just some guy. Weaver's a professional pitcher with a four-digit ERA.

Go Mariners.

My Prediction
Mariners go 1-2-3 in the first. Angels score 6 in the first.

Mariners get a hit in the second, no runs. Angels score two more. Weaver finally out.

9-0 heading into the seventh where the Mariners score 4. 11-4 heading into 8th, Mariners score 2.

11-6 heading into the 9th, Jose Guillen hits a grand slam. The next three batters are then struck out.

11-10.

Seems to be the trend, no?

by Chris21 on Apr 22, 2007 9:34 AM PDT   0 recs

That's right, go Mariners
As in Go Fuck Yourselves.

by Gomez on Apr 22, 2007 9:36 AM PDT   0 recs

This has to be Weaver's last start
Assuming he gets shelled, there's no way they'll let him stay in the rotation.

... Right?

by Katal LM on Apr 22, 2007 9:43 AM PDT   0 recs

Alas
I think it'll be several more starts before he gets yanked.  For one thing, with Felix out our rotation is already thin right now.  And 8 million bucks is going to convince the staff to give Weaver EVERY chance to fall to pieces before they replace him.

On a related note
Is it too early to start talking about the top draft picks for '08?

by Katal LM on Apr 22, 2007 10:37 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, pretty much
They aren't going to be in position to blow an extraa hole in the rotation.

About the only positive about this is that every loss pushes Hargrove and Bavasi closer to the edge, and that's not even an unmitigated positive.

Here's the question
Sans Felix, is the Mariners rotation the worst rotation in baseball?  I know the Nationals and Royals have terrible rotations, but so far I'd say the M's have them beat...especially considering that our pitchers are probably making at least 5x what any of the Nats/Royals pitchers outside of Meche are making

I still think the Nats are worse.  Patterson is off to a bad start which pretty much leaves Shaun Hill as there best pitcher.  They also have Jerome Williams and some guy named Chico in there rotation.

As much as I dislike the M's rotation (outside of Felix) it is not as bad as it's looked so far.  I know a lot of people aren't happy with Batista but I think when it's all said and done he'll be a decent 4 starter.  Weaver is bad but he's not 15 ERA bad, I honestly don't know what to make of the Ho.  I'm not a big Washburn fan either, but he'd probably be the ace for the Nats.

Even in terms of money, I think we still be the Nats, but it's a hell of a lot closer with Felix out, lol.

It would be pretty awesome to see Weaver stick it to the Angels.

He won't, but it would be cool.

If Weaver does well tonight
There will be no way to convince me that Jared didn't beg his teammates to go easy on him.

This just in from the pregame
Bloomy in at 2B for Lopez, who apparently has a big bump on his head from the collision yesterday.  Also Burke continuing to play for Kenji...

Can't Broussard play 2nd?
Obviously, you're not a golfer.

oh god
Willie and Burke starting...just kill me now.

by MFAN on Apr 22, 2007 11:45 AM PDT   0 recs

Might as well let the backups play today
This way we can save our regulars for when our real pitchers (and I use that term loosely) are on the mound.

Willie batting 2nd?
Adrian 7th?

allrriggghttttt?

by PShwa on Apr 22, 2007 11:58 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

And, yet, there he his
Turbo, Mister GIDP, batting third.

Might as well just call it a forfeit, and just hop on the plane down to get an early arrival in Texas...

Pray for Felix. Pray for the M's!

and they refuse to do it, because THEY didn't think of it.

I know we've joked around about it, and we've talked it about it briefly, but what is a realistic point for Grover to be fired??

I honestly think if we come out of this division road trip 0-7 he might be gone, it would just add to the doom and gloom of the 0-11 road trip last season.

by MFAN on Apr 22, 2007 12:12 PM PDT   0 recs

Churchill wrote last night
that he sees the over/under being July 1.

That seems way too late for me. If he's still past May, I may not be surprised, but I will be disappointed.

by Katal LM on Apr 22, 2007 12:15 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah
July 1st seems to late for me as well.

In the end I doubt Bavasi would fire Hargrove in April.  Late May or early June is probably more realistic.

Weaver's 86 MPH two seamer
60 percent of the time, it works all of the time.

by eponymous coward on Apr 22, 2007 12:18 PM PDT   0 recs

I say
Vidro at second
Sexson in left
Broussard in right
Guillen in Center
Ibanez at third
Beltre at short
Ballgame at DH
Ichiro on the mound.

At least it'd have entertainment value.

Obviously, you're not a golfer.

by JI on Apr 22, 2007 12:21 PM PDT   0 recs

Maybe we can bribe the umpire
so Ichiro can hit and Princess Willie can't.

I was talking about this with someone at Safeco
They say that Raul is the emergency third catcher, but is there any doubt that if something happened to both Johjima and Burke, they wouldn't at least try Bloomquist?
