Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

4/22: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 12:35pm PDT

Ichiro CF Matthews CF Ballgame 2B Cabrera SS Vidro DH Guerrero RF Ibanez LF Anderson LF Sexson 1B Kotchman 1B Guillen RF Izturis 3B Beltre 3B Hillenbrand DH Betancourt SS Molina C Burke C Aybar 2B ---------- ----------

Weaver (0-2, 15.75)         Santana (1-2, 7.63)

Don't worry guys, Jeff Weaver won't be deterred by his awful start. If you thought he was so weak-willed that he'd try to fix the problems that came up over his first two starts, well, you've got another thing coming.

"You may be tempted to add something or do something different," he said, "but staying in the same routine and working on the things that got you here is the best approach to take."

Of course, that dumbshit 86mph two-seamer isn't what got Weaver here. What got Weaver here was the success he had throwing 92mph heaters in the World Series. But what do I know? I'm just some guy. Weaver's a professional pitcher with a four-digit ERA.

Go Mariners.

My Prediction
Mariners go 1-2-3 in the first. Angels score 6 in the first.

Mariners get a hit in the second, no runs. Angels score two more. Weaver finally out.

9-0 heading into the seventh where the Mariners score 4. 11-4 heading into 8th, Mariners score 2.

11-6 heading into the 9th, Jose Guillen hits a grand slam. The next three batters are then struck out.

11-10.

Seems to be the trend, no?

This has to be Weaver's last start
Assuming he gets shelled, there's no way they'll let him stay in the rotation.

... Right?

by Katal LM on Apr 22, 2007 9:43 AM PDT reply actions

Alas
I think it'll be several more starts before he gets yanked.  For one thing, with Felix out our rotation is already thin right now.  And 8 million bucks is going to convince the staff to give Weaver EVERY chance to fall to pieces before they replace him.

On a related note
Is it too early to start talking about the top draft picks for '08?

by Katal LM on Apr 22, 2007 10:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, pretty much
They aren't going to be in position to blow an extraa hole in the rotation.

About the only positive about this is that every loss pushes Hargrove and Bavasi closer to the edge, and that's not even an unmitigated positive.

Here's the question
Sans Felix, is the Mariners rotation the worst rotation in baseball?  I know the Nationals and Royals have terrible rotations, but so far I'd say the M's have them beat...especially considering that our pitchers are probably making at least 5x what any of the Nats/Royals pitchers outside of Meche are making

by Sportszilla on Apr 22, 2007 11:05 AM PDT reply actions

I still think the Nats are worse.  Patterson is off to a bad start which pretty much leaves Shaun Hill as there best pitcher.  They also have Jerome Williams and some guy named Chico in there rotation.

As much as I dislike the M's rotation (outside of Felix) it is not as bad as it's looked so far.  I know a lot of people aren't happy with Batista but I think when it's all said and done he'll be a decent 4 starter.  Weaver is bad but he's not 15 ERA bad, I honestly don't know what to make of the Ho.  I'm not a big Washburn fan either, but he'd probably be the ace for the Nats.

Even in terms of money, I think we still be the Nats, but it's a hell of a lot closer with Felix out, lol.

I know we've joked around about it, and we've talked it about it briefly, but what is a realistic point for Grover to be fired??

I honestly think if we come out of this division road trip 0-7 he might be gone, it would just add to the doom and gloom of the 0-11 road trip last season.

My friends dragged me to a comic short film festival a couple years back, and one of the short films was about this office drone who turned into the Incredible Hulk, green skin and all... except he didn't inherit any of the Hulk's powers, so he would turn green, but he was still such a wimp that he would try to tear off his clothes, and couldn't.  It was kinda funny, but not... kinda like the Mariners.

Seriously...what was with the Rally Monkey? I just dont understand how it has anything to do with Anahiem or Angels. Im really asking this.

by Slica on Apr 22, 2007 2:55 PM PDT reply actions

Wiki history:
The character was invented on June 6, 2000, when the Angels were trailing the San Francisco Giants in the bottom of the ninth by two runs. Two video board operators, Dean Fraulino and Jason Humes, took a clip of a monkey jumping around from the 1994 Jim Carrey movie comedy Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and superimposed the words "RALLY MONKEY!" on top of it. Needless to say, the Halos rallied and went on to win the interleague clash. This proved to be so popular, the team decided to film their own promos with a monkey with screen experience.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 22, 2007 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Can anyone guess what the 2004 Mariners' record was after 14 games?

If you said 6-8, give yourself a pat on the back.  The 2006 team also started out 6-8.

Your current Mariners are 5-9, the worst start of any Mariner team this decade.

Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.

Break this whole fucking team up right now
Call up anyone in the minors worth a shit and trade/DFA/release whoever's keeping them from a starting gig, because anyone in Tacoma or West Tennessee can't do any fucking worse than this squad's doing right now.

NHL suspends Flames goalie 5 games

April 22, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- The NHL came down hard Sunday on Calgary, suspending goalie Jamie McLennan for five games and fining coach Jim Playfair $25,000 and the team $100,000 for actions late in Game 5 of the Flames' first-round series against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.

McLennan was given a match penalty for slashing Detroit's Johan Franzen in the midsection at 17:01 of the third period, one of four penalties the Flames were assessed for aggressive and illegal use of the stick (slashing or cross-checking) in the closing minutes of the Red Wings' 5-1 victory.

... Jamie McLennan is still playing?!

Great postgame interview
FSN cut to Hargrove, who was slumped over the chair with his head in his hands, as he was being asked about Weaver.  Says it all.

BTW Grover confirmed weaner will make his next start.  (I mistyped Weaver but it's hilariously accurate so I'm leaving it)
