(What is this?)

Thanks to KnightOfKingK, I now formally introduce Scrappy the Scapegoat, "the pup that laughs when you're down on your luck." Scrappy is henceforth to be blamed for anything and everything that goes wrong with the Mariners, because, just look at that smug shit-eating grin and ridiculous top hat. That guy's up to no good, and frankly, I'm getting sick of it.

Scrappy better hope for Scrappy's sake that Felix gets healthy.

A few bullet points tomorrow if I'm able to muster up the fortitude. Right now, it's probably 50/50, because I feel like I've been repeatedly kicked in the stomach by whatever it is that stomped on Julian Tavarez's face. We'll get through this together, guys. We have to. It's just going to take courage, resolve, and most importantly of all, time. Pray for Felix. It's all we can do.

Sadness
I was at the game tonight, and first of all I think it's ridiculous that we never received any info about why Felix left the game: of course, I called my friends and found out, but it's weak of the organization not to give any info whatsoever.

Second, it's sadly reflective on where we stand as a sports community that best part of tonight was the Sonics losing by 31, ensuring that they'll have the fifth-most balls in the hopper come lottery time.  Of course, even if they get Oden or Durant they're still leaving town, so I suppose I shouldn't even get excited about that...

Fuck.

Frankly
I went to the game before Felix got injured. I saw him get injured, and almost cried. I just about left, because I felt totally sick to my stomach.

I have never felt so much pain while watching a baseball game.

After Felix went down, I wanted us to lose, and when Sexson hit that home run, I left.

This is slowly setting in
Nothing is safe in Seattle sportsland.

Maybe Felix is being saved from the team of mediocrity.  Felix is boarding "Noah's Arc" to sit for 40 days and 40 nights (or the whole season).  The Lord rains down and floods this mediocre team, manager, and GM.

We come back next year and begin anew.  New Manager, new GM, revamped team.  Felix arrives like brand new and ready to go.  We contend, make the playoffs, begin the dynasty.

A man can dream....

Ahem
IF IT WEREN'T FOR SCRAPPY'S STUPID FUCKING GRIN THEN FELIX WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN THROWING THE SLIDER, AND ICHIRO WOULD HAVE SIGNED A 5 YEAR EXTENSION BY NOW. TRAVIS BLACKLEY AND BOBBY MADRITSCH WOULD EACH BE 3-0 AND WE WOULD HAVE DRAFTED ALEX GORDON AND TIM LINCECUM. SCRAPPY, YOU ARE A DUMB UGLY SON OF A BITCH (SERIOUSLY) AND I HATE YOU.

ichiro
who swings in a 3-0 count down 2 with 1 on?  Huge mistake.  Without Ichiro's brain fart we would only have 2 outs in the 9th.  I can't believe he did that.

by superdeek on Apr 19, 2007 1:32 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree
did Hargrove order it, or was it Ichiro doing his own idiotic thing?

by Rollo Tomasi on Apr 19, 2007 1:50 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The difference between a...
Popup and a liner isn't much.

Concentrating on such a micro issue of production isn't helpful. You win some, you lose some.

Now go back and pray for Felix like a good little kid.

Even if he hits a liner
that's not smart baseball. Even if we give up, the players shouldn't no matter what happens to Felix.

by Rollo Tomasi on Apr 19, 2007 2:18 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes,
But at that point you're applying a wide-angled philosophy to an extremely unique player.

Ichiro isn't an Edgar Martinez type player who goes up to the plate with a specific plan, even to the point of setting up a pitcher with a little game theory.

Ichiro is a player who goes up to the plate, sees the holes and tries to put the ball in those holes. To Ichiro, if a pitch looks like a hittable pitch, he swings regardless of the count.

This isn't a debate of baseball intelligence, its a debate of baseball philosophy.

Regardless, I would bet that Hargrove had the green light for him anyways. Good contact hitter? Check. Good pitch recognition? Check. Hitter that has been warming up the last few games? Check. Unique as hell player that Hargrove has no idea what's going through his player's mind? Check. Player that Hargrove respects despite not understanding him? Check.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Its baseball.

No matter your philosophy
that was a bad decision. Nathan wasn't particularly sharp, and was having a hard time with his location. Ichiro is mostly a singles hitter, and a walk was as good as a single in that situation.

by Rollo Tomasi on Apr 19, 2007 5:07 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What do you mean?
A walk isn't the same as a hit. Ichiro's line this season with runners on: .364 / .500 / .545 / 1.045

Even with a single, the runner can advance to 3rd sometimes. Speedy Ichiro on 1st and a runner on 3rd, 1 out.
And before everybody blames Ichiro for the loss, don't forget Beltre not being able to do anything with the 1 out, bases filled chance earlier in the game (K).

I don't buy this scapegoating of Ichiro. The only reason it was close in the first place, is because of those really great plays Ichi made in the 1st, with 2 runners on and the bases loaded.

by Tom C on Apr 19, 2007 7:11 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not blaming Ichiro
I'm just saying swinging at the 3-0 was a bad idea. And in that situation, moving the runner to third doesn't really matter.

by Rollo Tomasi on Apr 19, 2007 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Whatever.
But this is results based bashing.

If Ichiro hit it on the screws, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

The difference between a line drive and a popup when a cylinder is colliding with a sphere isn't huge.

If Ichiro thought the pitch was good enough to swing at, that's fine by me. He's the one with the career .340+ average (with exceptional Batter BABIP) over 7000+ ABs, who's showing very little signs of aging. We're not talking about Adrian "I still swing at low and outside sliders" Beltre or Carl "I died on the job last year" Everett or anything.

Agreed
Very dissapointed in the result, but I wouldn't want to start putting constraints on how a player like Ichiro plays the game.

by DCMariner on Apr 19, 2007 9:53 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like this opinion
I winced after the 3-0 popup, but only because I knew Ichiro was gonna get roasted for swinging away at 3-0.  IIRC someone else on this team swung at a 3-0 pitch (Johjima?) and got a hit earlier this year, and very few people panned that swing.

by Gomez on Apr 19, 2007 10:15 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No it isn't
When someone draws for an inside strait and loses, it's not "results based bashing" to say that it was a bad move. It was a bad move regardless of outcome, just like swinging in that situation.

by Rollo Tomasi on Apr 19, 2007 5:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sometimes pot odds dictate that you draw
to an inside straight. Sometimes you let a hitter swing on 3-0 if they are as proven as Ichiro.

Little bit of optimism on a dark day
Got this in an email this AM and figured I'd pass it along to the masses and hope that it might help give everyone some hope:

"If you recall in his start in Boston, Felix took a liner off his non-plant leg. Because of the temperature and andrenaline, there's a good chance that he finished the game pitching in some pain and may have had to compensate for it. Not only during the game but quite possibly in side sessions this week. Worse case scenario is the obvious. Best case scenario is that this is just tightness, not a serious injury. Believe me when I say this, baseball doesn't need or want this to be serious."

Ok
So I have a some what funny story, that made me feel a tiny bit better. (makeing fun of people sometimes makes me feel better)

I'm away from home for work, in Oly WA., and I sat at my computer until right before sexson's homerun, I needed to eat. I went to a little bar got a beer and some food. I was kind of depressed about felix I kept hoping they would say something about his elbow.

I said to this guy next to me, "Any word on Felix's elbow". He said, "Nope. but that Rodriguez
hurt himself. I don't know much about him, put it sounds like he was suppose to be pretty good."

I looked at him and smiled. He said he'd been a big M's fan since the 90's.

Later right before Vidro got his hit in the 9th. "He screamed at the T.V. put in Bloomquist, Melvin"

I chuckled a little and said to him, "no wander we suck".  And then he said, "yeah because blowers is gone."
