Thanks to KnightOfKingK, I now formally introduce Scrappy the Scapegoat, "the pup that laughs when you're down on your luck." Scrappy is henceforth to be blamed for anything and everything that goes wrong with the Mariners, because, just look at that smug shit-eating grin and ridiculous top hat. That guy's up to no good, and frankly, I'm getting sick of it.

Scrappy better hope for Scrappy's sake that Felix gets healthy.
A few bullet points tomorrow if I'm able to muster up the fortitude. Right now, it's probably 50/50, because I feel like I've been repeatedly kicked in the stomach by whatever it is that stomped on Julian Tavarez's face. We'll get through this together, guys. We have to. It's just going to take courage, resolve, and most importantly of all, time. Pray for Felix. It's all we can do.

Sadness
Second, it's sadly reflective on where we stand as a sports community that best part of tonight was the Sonics losing by 31, ensuring that they'll have the fifth-most balls in the hopper come lottery time. Of course, even if they get Oden or Durant they're still leaving town, so I suppose I shouldn't even get excited about that...
Fuck.
I can't remember a game

Frankly
I have never felt so much pain while watching a baseball game.
After Felix went down, I wanted us to lose, and when Sexson hit that home run, I left.
I'm just going to watch the NFC Championship Game
This is slowly setting in
Maybe Felix is being saved from the team of mediocrity. Felix is boarding "Noah's Arc" to sit for 40 days and 40 nights (or the whole season). The Lord rains down and floods this mediocre team, manager, and GM.
We come back next year and begin anew. New Manager, new GM, revamped team. Felix arrives like brand new and ready to go. We contend, make the playoffs, begin the dynasty.
A man can dream....
If its the worst case scenario
Ahem
Sorry to interject

Concentrating on such a micro issue of production isn't helpful. You win some, you lose some.
Now go back and pray for Felix like a good little kid.

Yes,
Ichiro isn't an Edgar Martinez type player who goes up to the plate with a specific plan, even to the point of setting up a pitcher with a little game theory.
Ichiro is a player who goes up to the plate, sees the holes and tries to put the ball in those holes. To Ichiro, if a pitch looks like a hittable pitch, he swings regardless of the count.
This isn't a debate of baseball intelligence, its a debate of baseball philosophy.
Regardless, I would bet that Hargrove had the green light for him anyways. Good contact hitter? Check. Good pitch recognition? Check. Hitter that has been warming up the last few games? Check. Unique as hell player that Hargrove has no idea what's going through his player's mind? Check. Player that Hargrove respects despite not understanding him? Check.
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Its baseball.

What do you mean?
Even with a single, the runner can advance to 3rd sometimes. Speedy Ichiro on 1st and a runner on 3rd, 1 out.
And before everybody blames Ichiro for the loss, don't forget Beltre not being able to do anything with the 1 out, bases filled chance earlier in the game (K).
I don't buy this scapegoating of Ichiro. The only reason it was close in the first place, is because of those really great plays Ichi made in the 1st, with 2 runners on and the bases loaded.

I'm not blaming Ichiro
by Rollo Tomasi on Apr 19, 2007 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions
Whatever.
If Ichiro hit it on the screws, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
The difference between a line drive and a popup when a cylinder is colliding with a sphere isn't huge.
If Ichiro thought the pitch was good enough to swing at, that's fine by me. He's the one with the career .340+ average (with exceptional Batter BABIP) over 7000+ ABs, who's showing very little signs of aging. We're not talking about Adrian "I still swing at low and outside sliders" Beltre or Carl "I died on the job last year" Everett or anything.

Little bit of optimism on a dark day
"If you recall in his start in Boston, Felix took a liner off his non-plant leg. Because of the temperature and andrenaline, there's a good chance that he finished the game pitching in some pain and may have had to compensate for it. Not only during the game but quite possibly in side sessions this week. Worse case scenario is the obvious. Best case scenario is that this is just tightness, not a serious injury. Believe me when I say this, baseball doesn't need or want this to be serious."

I'm away from home for work, in Oly WA., and I sat at my computer until right before sexson's homerun, I needed to eat. I went to a little bar got a beer and some food. I was kind of depressed about felix I kept hoping they would say something about his elbow.
I said to this guy next to me, "Any word on Felix's elbow". He said, "Nope. but that Rodriguez
hurt himself. I don't know much about him, put it sounds like he was suppose to be pretty good."
I looked at him and smiled. He said he'd been a big M's fan since the 90's.
Later right before Vidro got his hit in the 9th. "He screamed at the T.V. put in Bloomquist, Melvin"
I chuckled a little and said to him, "no wander we suck". And then he said, "yeah because blowers is gone."
