I'm Trying To Put This In Words
It's not working.
I knew something was wrong when Felix started the game rough last night, but I was thinking more along the lines of off day than arm injury. I got wide-eyed when I saw Felix signal for the trainer, and as he walked off the field to one of the most uneasy ovations I've ever heard, my cold empty heart sank to the ground. I haven't been able to smile since. For the past 13 hours or so, the happiest I've felt in any given moment could be best described by an observer as "currently doesn't want to jump off a building." But those are just fleeting moments of pleasure in a suicidal existence.
Felix is no ordinary pitcher, and he carries no ordinary load of pressure or expectation on his back. After last week, people everywhere began to notice what he means to this ballclub, which is why it's funny in a sick kind of way that this happened just after ESPN started cranking its hype machine. I went to class this morning and a handful of people tried to comfort me and tell me that everything's going to be all right in the end. Bear in mind that I live in Connecticut. You think this happens if it's Jarrod Washburn walking off the mound in the first? Ho Ramirez? If it were Jeff Weaver, it might even be funny, but seeing this happen to Felix is no laughing matter for anyone involved. There's no pointing fingers or teasing or taunting; the entire baseball world is united in a collective state of concern. If you didn't appreciate before just how special Felix really is, you probably do now.
I can't really explain how much he means to us, the people who've invested so much blood, sweat and tears into following the Mariners through some of the darkest years of their existence. Felix is our distant light in the tunnel. When the team fell flat on its face in 2004, when pitching prospect after pitching prospect turned into a colossal bust, when Bavasi dealt away two of our favorite players for expensive pieces of crap, all along we were able to pull through, because no matter what happened to the roster's periphery, we still had Felix, and that was enough to keep us interested. It's no coincidence that "We have Felix and you can't have him" became something of a rallying cry. He is the Mariners. He is the spectacle. He's the guy who's supposed to make everything all right and become the official face of the franchise in case Ichiro takes off for greener pastures. The team needs him now more than they've ever needed a player before, and while things were looking up as recently as one week ago, now the picture's much less clear.
At this point, we don't know anything about Felix's injury, other than the fact that his elbow was tight enough to force him out of a game. It could be nothing. It could be the kind of thing that you worry about for a day or two until you wake up feeling great and get right back to what you were doing. If that turns out to be the case, then I can't help but think that this is some kind of reminder from above that we need to appreciate what we have, because it can be gone in a flash. The universe has a cruel sense of humor, but if Felix turns out to be fine, I suggest that everybody laugh at the joke, because I don't want to make it angrier.
At the same time, though, "right elbow tightness" is terrifying. Nothing good ever begins with "right elbow tightness." If this is serious, and Felix has to go away for a while, I don't know what I'm going to do. I don't know what any of us are going to do. Our season rests in the balance, and without Felix, we don't have a chance. What do you do? Call it quits? Give up? What's the proper fan etiquette for dealing with something of such potential severity so early in the season? Without Felix, not only is this a bad team, but it's a boring bad team, the kind we thought we put behind us in October 2004. That's not a team I want to watch, not for another five and a half months. On any given day, during any given blowout, we've been able to say "well at least Felix is pitching soon," and that's been enough. What if we can't do that anymore?
I've always been pretty good about laughing off Mariner-related misery. The team's been a joke for the past few years, but I've been able to enjoy it, because if you can't laugh at yourself, you've got nothing. But this, this shakes and frightens me to the core. Last Wednesday, Felix reminded me why I've firmly preserved my loyalty to this organization for so long. As far as my heart's concerned, last Wednesday Felix became the Mariners, and everything good about them, and every reason why they'd be fun to watch for the next several years. I was ready to sit in the passenger seat while Felix took me for a wonderful ride.
And now, I don't know. I'm a Mariners fan first, but without Felix, I don't know how strong that attachment can be. I don't know how long I can watch a rotation led by Jarrod Washburn and keep telling myself that it's worth it. At some point you just have to recognize when something isn't paying off and cut your losses. It's an awful, awful situation, but I'm not about to deny that a serious Felix injury would make me question how I'm living my life.
I hope I'm overreacting. I hope we all are, that this turns out to be nothing and Felix is right back on track in a week or two. There's nothing quite like learning a lesson without actually losing anything tangible. Hell, we may even be better off because of it.
But I'll tell you one thing - this is a bad day to be a natural pessimist.

Shannon Drayer from KOMO
"I was concerned heading into today's game because even though the starters got through their first starts after the long layoff following the Cleveland debacle, I had heard some mention of extra soreness after those starts. I don't think we are out of the woods yet. The second starts may be more telling. As for Felix, hope for the best."

We feel your pain
But the bad news is, the last time King Richard the HardThrower had this particular type of thing (Elbow Tightness), it ended up being a hyper-extended elbow and he was out for a long time.

Absolutely
Every pitch that any major leaguer throws is potentially his last.
That's the nature of the game. Pitching is completely unnatural to the human body. Best to keep this in mind and remember that the M's can still be entertaining without Felix. There can be hope even if it doesn't seem like it now.
It is completely unhealthy to get so worked up about one guy. Or even one team. Or even one sport. Or even sports in general. Lots of other things in this world to get worked up about if you truly must get worked up.

Nobody even knows if it's an injury, yet. Relax. Everybody back off the edge of the cliff. Baseball, the Mariners, and, yes, life does go on.

I feel like we brought this on ourselves
The season began with the most baseball analysts familiar with the AL West predicting an extremely tight race, but noting that the Mariners are one big injury away from irrelevance. Felix is the most crucial single member of the team, and him being out for any length of time spells disaster. I think of this as an atomic explosion - the initial blast is devastating, but it's the years of nuclear winter and fallout rain that really get you.
What gives me some solace is that it could still very well be nothing at all. Really, I think I could cope with anything short of a Liriano, because Felix at 80% is still head and shoulders above most anyone in the league. If it is something like a Liriano, I'm afraid I won't be posting here for a while, as its hard to type while in a ketamine induced stupor.

Only good thing I can possible look forward to
SO the only good thing I can think of if he is truly injured is the m's tank, Grover is fired before June, Bavasi pulls a fire sale/trades Ichiro if they can't look him up and gets a bunch of prospects/players that will help in 2008.
Hopefully he wakes us this morning and feels no problems and it was just a one day event. Or he wakes up, his right arm is injured, but he realizes he can throw with his left armeven better then his right arm.....
by Grubbie on Apr 19, 2007 9:11 AM PDT 0 recs
Ditto
I'd be happiest if Felix is completely fine. But if he isn't, then at the very least, this gives the team a chance to tank. And that means that Hargrove is gone, that Bavasi will definitely be replaced this offseason, Morrow can be sent to Tacoma, and we can actually focus on rebuilding for a change.

Yesterday
Then he waved to the dugout and Rick Griffin and co come out. I was so quick to go into depressed fan-mode that I almost didn't realize how the team reacted- Felix kicked the dirt, the infielders' body language changed totally- on a Felix start, they're all leaned in towards home plate, crouched in their best ready position. But with the mound conference, they all slumped their shoulders and looked at the dirt and talked morosely to each other. And then Ichiro, who (naturally) did not change his expression, realized that he'd have to do just about everything himself and legged it out extra, extra hard for a couple of catches in the first inning that no centerfielder can really be expected to get to.
They showed some life in the later innings, of course, which was better than last year, when they'd have folded just as soon as Felix went out. Of course, they were lifeless in the early and middle innings, but even with Turbo's semi-clutch RBI they knew they were gonna lose.
Yesterday's game sucked.

I have to be honest here
I saw Felix struggle with command yesterday. I also figured it was just an off day but after he threw another pitch into the ground and threw up the stop sign, every one came up to the mound. No way was this a good thing. My heart started to sink....and then proceeded to drop as he walked off the mound. It sucked. It really sucked. The difference between Felix and everyone else on the staff is mind-blowing.
Now we have "Right Elbow Tightness" as the official word until he gets re-examined. Worst first news you can possibly get for a pitcher.
Now I'm sitting here thinking that no matter what happens Felix returns to his dominant self. Few days, few months, the season? I want my Felix back. I want him back just the way he was, maybe even better. I will be forever grateful if we can have him back.
Something else I just thought of. Someone else on our staff said that his elbow was "a little tight" last month. He turned out quite alright.
Pray for Felix.

Pretty Good
The bigger problem is that very rarely does elbow tightness just go away. It's a sign that the elbow can't fully handle the rigors of a pitching motion, and unless the team is exceedingly cautious there's a good chance Felix will come back too soon and suffer a more serious injury.
On the other hand, he had some seemingly-terrifying shoulder issues in 2005 before he got called up that ended up being nothing. He may, in fact, be being extremely cautious (which is a great thing). It was a damn cold night at Safeco, and if he couldn't fully get loose this could end up being nothing to worry about. I'd still DL him, because there's no point in taking any chances.
I'd imagine they're running a battery of tests on him today, so we should have more info soon.

I'm happy about it.
But this organization minus Felix sucks, and the people that made it that way are getting away with it as long as Felix carries their sorry asses.
I want Felix out just long enough for the team to tank enough that Hargrove, Lincoln, Armstrong and Bavasi get what's coming to them.
Because honestly, the playoffs would be nice this year -- but are you going to feel right when Hargrove got a 3-4 year extension? And, say, Chris Antonetti goes elsewhere?
A lot of good could come out of Felix being hurt.
by oneiric232 on Apr 19, 2007 11:47 AM PDT 0 recs
Bold statement.
It sorta forces the M's hand with the Ichiro situation. They could trade him, which may be the best for both the short and the long term health of this franchise. Or, he could get his extension and be done with all the questions and not be distracted.
Yeah, that's sorta what I was trying to say yesterday when we were all cursing God with the news. God always seems to find a way to open another window when he slams the door on our face.

Well, I am glad someone said it
But, I think this could ultimately be a boon to the franchise's future. Failure in 2007 means no more Hargrove, more likelihood of an Ichiro trade, no more Bavasi, possibly sending Morrow down, and a better, younger core of players come 2008.
That's the silver lining - but I do hope Felix is ok.

I'm having trouble dealing with this
In the meantime, it's time for the rest of the Mariners to step it up a notch. Prove that you're a .500 team without your crutch, guys, and then when Felix makes it back let's take it to the postseason. Fail and we don't have a shot.
Beltre, Ichiro, Lopez, Ramirez and Weaver, the ball is in your court. You five are the keys to us surviving this scare.

And damnit it isn't.
Two things:

2.I swear to FSM, if Felix comes through this ok, I will never EVER mock another players injury again, even if he's an Angel. That's a promise.
