4/11: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 4:05pm PDT

Ichiro CF Lugo SS Beltre 3B Youkilis 1B Vidro "DH" Ortiz DH Ibanez LF Ramirez LF Sexson 1B Drew RF Guillen RF Lowell 3B Johjima C Varitek C Betancourt SS Crisp CF Lopez 2B Pedroia 2B ----------                  ----------

King Felix (1-0, 0.00)      Matsuzaka (1-0, 1.29)

If you've got any friends or family who have yet to be indoctrinated into the King Felix religion, be sure to sit them down in front of a TV tonight so they can witness his incredible power for themselves. It may not work out as well as we want it to, but the chance is definitely there, and repeating his Opening Day performance today could make Felix an instant legend. Don't miss this. While a loss could be devastating, an impressive win might just turn out to be the high point of the season, and years from now we might all meet up and reflect on where we were the night that Felix dominated the Red Sox in their own dilapidated house on national television.

Thanks to the unparalleled generosity and awesomeness of phil333 - who I hear practically has to beat supermodels away with sticks - I'm going to be watching this one in person (observations and Win Expectancy stuff'll go up tomorrow after I'm back), so no one's hoping for a pleasant outcome more than me. Just know that, if the Mariners win, I'm going to be the happiest guy on the planet, and if the Mariners lose, I might end up going to jail for multiple homicide. Keep on your toes, Deanna, because as of ~7pm PDT tonight this blog may need a new main author for the next 20-to-life.

What I wouldn't give for a first-pitch Ichiro homer.

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

I want Great Felix today
I am just filled with this dread that the layoff has been too long and Boston is a much better hitting team than Oakland.

Frankly, I hope he goes out and mows down every one of them, Ichiro blasts a home run, gets 3 singles and steals a few bases, and Beltre breaks out of his damn slump.

This movie was shot in 3B - three beers - and it looks good, eh? - Bob MacKenzie

Lucky So-and-so
One of my dreams is to see a game at Fenway.  You hit the jackpot: Fenway & Felix, congratulations you lucky so-and-so!

It is a great ball park to walk into...
but a shitty stadium to watch a game for 9 innings.

I went to school out in Boston and I remember my first game at Fenway and it was amazing walking into it. But most of the seats aren't meant for anybody over 6ft and you are just cramped and uncomfy the whole game.  The bleacher seats are a little better but still suck.  Standing room tickets are alright, but way to expensive and you can't see flyballs.  And if you get lucky enough to buy Monster tickets you have an amazing view of the game, but the bar stool type chairs suck to sit on for the whole game, then again, you don't really realize it cause you have this amazing view of the game.

If you do get lucky and get loge box seats(forgot the exact name) or better you will realy enjoy the game.  But the price of them is too much to justify for an everyday expense.

I still won't forgot when I dropped 2k on Sox ticekts, that was a great baseball year.

by Grubbie on Apr 11, 2007 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm 6'5.
Yeah, there's a reason I always go for the SRO tickets instead of an actual seat.

by Jeff on Apr 11, 2007 9:20 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It sucks...
I'm 6'2 my brother is 6'6.  Standing room tickets are great but I always hated not being able to see flyballs in the air.

They are MUCH MUCH MUCH better then the seating right in front of hte SRO tickets.

I feel your pain.
My biggest highlight of my Japan trip last year should have been finally getting to go to Koshien stadium, which is almost like Japan's version of Fenway -- Hanshin fans are pretty much as crazy as Red Sox fans, the Tigers to the Giants are like the Sox to the Yankees, and the stadium was built in 1924...

...and at 5'7" I couldn't actually fit my legs in the legroom I had, and worried I was damaging my knees from keeping my legs tucked under my seat.  Considering the stadium was built to host the high school tournaments in the first place it's not unsurprising, but godDAMN, I have no idea how they find 48,000 people crazy enough to want to sit in those seats every single game of the year.

If you guys went to Koshien, they probably wouldn't let you enter on account of "You must be THIS SHORT to enter the park".

No, just kidding.

I'm trying not to get too jazzed about Felix tonight.  He's a young kid and this is Fenway after all.  I'm just hoping he does what comes naturally to him.  Because, really, normal unremarkable Felix is utterly awesome.

What Do you hope for More...
Ichiro dominating Dice-K or Felix Dominating Boston?

I know that if Felix dominates we COULD win...but some part of me really wants Ichiro to silence those 40,000 Sox fans with a lead-off homerun.

After yesterday...Am I being greedy hoping for both to come true?

by AsusDriver on Apr 11, 2007 7:42 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I want Felix to dominate Boston
and I want a WIN.  How they do it beyond that doesn't really matter.

In a perfect world, Dice-K and Felix would both be perfect through 9.  Putz would get the win and Pineiro the loss somewhere in the 12th inning.

I'm so excited about this game.
I really don't want to wait until 4 for it to start, but if it starts any earlier, then I won't be able to see any of it on TV. At least with it starting at 4, I can catch the last half of the game on TV.

Holy Jebus.
This is posted over at USS Mariner:

Alex Rodriguez has had 28 at-bats through the first 7 games. The Mariners have 120 at-bats through their first four games. Alex Rodriguez has twice as many homers (6 to 3), more extra base hits (9 to 8), the same amount of walks (5), and the same amount of RBIs (15) as the M's entire team. By himself.

Well unless you are wearing a yankee jersey under your M's jersey.

The one thing I always liked about Fenway is the fans know how to give somebody a good taunting without always getting into a fight.  Of course you have the drunks who try to fight with elderly woman when they tell them to shutup.

I remember going to an A's game with my brother, his girlfriend and his girlfriends younger brother.  Of course the younger brother was a A's fan wearing his Jersey and taunting all the sox fans.  I was suprised on that day, we all didn't walk out of there covered in beer or in jail.  Luckly most people around us were having a good time taunting him back.

In my (1) experience at Fenway
...the M's taking the lead early and keeping it tends to have positive results, too.  You don't even have to 'give as good as you get' when you can just chuckle and point to the score board.

Not only did the M's beat the Sox, they did it behind Dave Fleming and his 50MPH 'curve' ball.

This will be the single most important...
event in all of Seattle sports.
It will eclipse the M's beating Anaheim to make the '95 playoffs, or their miraculous victory over baseball's evil empire the New York Yankees.  It will be more exciting than both the Sonics and the Storm's world championship victories.  It will be more dramatic than The Seahawks playoff run to the Superbowl.

The issue is whether the M's go above or below .500 in their 5th game of the season.  At stake is whether Felix goes to 2-0 or 1-1 or possibly gets a no decision.  This entire season will be decided by this game.  Will the M's = laughing stock who cannot even rely on their "ace" or will the M's = contender who plan to ride their ace to 88 victories finishing 2 games behind Anaheim.

by johnbai on Apr 11, 2007 11:09 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If the M's lose
it'll make the WTO riots look like a church social.

This entire season will be decided by this game.

And perhaps the future of the Mariners in Seattle.  After all, their current facility is quite obviously getting out of date, and if they don't get a new stadium at taxpayer expense, they'll have no choice but to move.  To Oklahoma City.

This was the "most important season in Sonics history" because the only way to save the Sonics is to get one of the top 2 picks in the draft (Greg Oden or Kevin Durant).  Anything else and the team is out the door.

I'm in Tacoma, with Comcast
I know I have ESPN HD, but I'm not sure about ESPN2.

I know all of the home games are broadcast in HD on 788, but I don't think many of the away games are.

by FWombat on Apr 11, 2007 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you have Comcast HD
then you have ESPN2.  It's 736, right next to ESPN at 735.

And I didn't realize that only home games were on 788 - thanks for the tip...

Great!
Now I just have to figure out how to skip out of work a few hours early.

I think there are a few away games on the HD channel.  There was a schedule around somewhere, but I didn't bookmark it and apparently my google-fu is weak today.  :(

I think ESPN2 will be blacked out, though.
I remember last year there was a game on ESPN that was also televised on FSN and ESPN was blacked out during the game.

Lots of different stuff thrown,
and a 3-2 count before the guy finally grounded out.

You wonder why they throw so many damn pitches in Japan, it's partially because there's this sort of typical "let's spend 5-6 pitches per batter just throwing breaking crap and whatever".

Scary
All I saw on Gameday was Felix to Beltre (in play, outs), and it scared the hell out of me!

SWEET
