Doyle to Tampa

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays made their first official move of the offseason on Thursday when they claimed outfielder Chris Snelling off waivers from the Oakland Athletics.

In a corresponding move, the club released right-hander Jay Witasick to make room for Snelling on the 40-man roster.

Snelling, 25, began the 2007 season as the Nationals' Opening Day left fielder, but he was traded to the A's for outfielder Ryan Langerhans on May 2 after hitting .204 in 24 games. Snelling finished the season with a combined .246 average with one home run and seven RBIs in 30 games. He underwent season-ending surgery on July 3 after suffering a left knee injury.

Snelling's first eight professional seasons were spent in the Mariners organization. He first played in the Major Leagues in 2002 at age 20, but injuries have limited him to 582 professional games over nine seasons, including 89 at the Major League level, where he holds a career average of .240 with six home runs, 19 RBIs and a .357 on-base percentage.

Snelling owns a career .311 average in the Minor Leagues, where he hit .300 or better in each of his first seven seasons. He is familiar with Tropicana Field, where he has a .375 career mark (6-for-16) with a home run.

Snelling is the third Australian national to play for the Rays, joining current right-hander Grant Balfour and former Rays left-hander Damian Moss (2004). He represented Australia in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.

Now I love the D'Rays even more.
Not that he'll ever get a chance with that team.

Well that's not an org
that needs outfielders :-(

Doyle is just minor league fodder at this point barring a miraculous recovery.

by Corco on Oct 25, 2007 1:44 PM PDT reply actions

Their outfielders seem to be hurt a lot
so perhaps Doyle will fill in from time to time between injuries.

by Llewdor on Oct 25, 2007 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Do you mean
Doyle will fill in between their injuries or between his? I still wish Doyle the best and wish the A's had held onto him.

by kva15 on Oct 25, 2007 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Snelling's still in the league?
Huh, imagine that.
These pretzels....are making me thirsty!

Hooray
Snelling's knees meet turf!  Has disaster written all over it like a mine in Utah.
I fucking hate you Mariners

Yeah but...
It might be just crazy enough to work...

I'm calling it now.
D-Rays beat the 116 game win record of the Mariners/Cubs, go on to sweep the series.

In other news...
Former Mariner prospect (and personal savior to millions) now deemed essentially worthless.

Apparently the Seattle Mariners considered picking Snelling off waivers and releasing Jose Vidro in order to make room for him on the roster... but then decided the move might make them look like idiots. <citation needed>

by johnbai on Oct 25, 2007 3:10 PM PDT reply actions

that actually would be idiotic I think
at this point, having Chris Snelling in your organization probably triples your health care costs.

Pick him up,
Have pre-emptive surgery done on all of his joints, give him the skeleton from Wolverine on the X-Men, and you're all set!

Didn't Doyle experience one of his many injuries
while rounding third in Tampa? That was... 2002, right? That place has ghosts, man.

by Slozbury Stouvre on Oct 25, 2007 3:30 PM PDT reply actions

Don't think so
Wasn't it this game?

Snelling only played twice in Seattle in 2002.

by marc w on Oct 25, 2007 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't like reading that PBP
it's just sad.

In some parallel universe, Kerry Wood is still mind-blowingly good and Doyle's been to 3 AS games by now.

The one where Tony Conigliaro has 600 HRs?
And Mark Fidrych has 6 Cy Youngs and 300 wins?

STOP, BOTH OF YOU
Willie is ours, and you can't have him

by spittle8 on Oct 26, 2007 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Yup.
And interestingly, in spite of their common inability to remain healthy, Kerry Wood will get $millions and a guaranteed MLB contract, and all Doyle can hope for is a chance for a roster spot out of ST...

Dave Justice
Mo Vaughn, Sandy Alomar, Tim Raines, Juan Gonzales, Barry Larkin, Mark Grace, Ron Gant, Ellis Burks, Greg Vaughn, Erik Karros, Raul Mondesi.

I remember all these players when I think about collecting baseball cards back in the early/mid 90s.

Damn, no joke!
Ichiro batting third.
Ben Davis behind the plate.
Soriano as a starter
Doyle as a starter

Too bad all of those things didn't pan out like they should've...

by Graham MacAree on Oct 25, 2007 5:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Heh.
I'm lucky that the awkward situation I found myself in while staying with one of our family friends who lost his leg in the war (as a German) actually didn't turn out any worse than it did.

Thinking about that whole trip again, it's a miracle I didn't get shot several times.  Including the time when a group of us mooned the East German and Russian soldiers keeping watch on the other side of the Wall (this was when the Berlin Wall was still, you know... up....).

yowza
one year to do a engr masters? crazy

by Matthew on Oct 26, 2007 9:21 AM PDT up reply actions

I dunno
I don't think it's really the same scheme. It's 4 years for a B.A. (Hons) M.Eng. which is more in depth than an American undergrad degree but probably less so than any graduate degree in Yankeeland.

It's all a bit confusing really.

by Graham MacAree on Oct 26, 2007 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah i've heard that
Basically what I heard is a Masters in europe is a little better than a BS here and a PhD there is a little better than a Masters here and then a postdoc in europe is not quite as good as a PhD here.  The grad education system expectations are just a little different.

by Edgar for Pres on Oct 26, 2007 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions

so Europe is like AAA
to our MLB? When it comes to university. Sound about right to me.

by Matthew on Oct 26, 2007 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

They're overstating it
Our undergrad education blows the US out of the water in terms of depth because English kids specialise at 16 and don't do any electives or anything on the path to their degree. This becomes really apparent in 3rd year when we have the MIT exchange kids over - they're behind in everything, fail half their classes, cry at exams, etc.

A second year CUED student is supposed to be at US BS level in every engineering discipline, so I'd guess that the M.Eng would put me at a tick under a Masters degree in the States rather than a slightly over a BS. Of course, a) I'm biased and b) go to the best engineering school in the UK, so my experience probably doesn't generalise well to the rest of the system. I'd guess Oxford students are probably at a similar level to us though.

by Graham MacAree on Oct 26, 2007 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Another little point
MIT isn't really that good of an undergrad school I think.  I don't think most of the undergrad programs are really anything special.  I think they do a much better job with the grad students though.  Oh and by the way the Berkeley Phd program is pretty tough.

by Edgar for Pres on Oct 26, 2007 1:22 PM PDT up reply actions

You at Berkeley, huh?
I think I'm working with some of the biomechanics dudes there this year for my project.

is from the UK/lives in Glasgow.

He flies over here somewhat often for Bucs games and/or Rays games, and catches every Rays game on internet radio.   Freakish.

The Ray's probably should've claimed Snelling's knee off waivers too.
