10/1: Open One-Game Playoff Thread
First Pitch: 4:37pm PDT
and Jake Peavy (19-6, awesome) vs.
and Josh Fogg (10-9, not)
----------
A lot of people think the Padres can't hit, but their .771 road OPS actually ranks fourth in the NL. Petco just happens to murder offensive performance at a level of which even Mariner fans can't conceive. In a National League field that - let's face it - totally sucks, either one of these teams is perfectly capable of catching fire and losing in the Series. They just have to get through today first.
On the topic of one-game playoffs, you'll never guess which team was the biggest choker of all time.

Scott Schoeneweis-Roider
"Scott Schoeneweis received six steroid shipments from Signature Pharmacy while playing for the White Sox in 2003 and 2004, ESPN is reporting.
Just keep kicking the Mets while they're down. The source who reviewed the invoices said that Schoeneweis spent $1,160 on the steroids. He received five packages from May 2003 through 2004, five of which contained testosterone and three of which contained stanozolol. Schoeneweis just finished the first year of his three-year, $10.8 million contract with the Mets. He had a 5.03 ERA in 59 innings."

It was almost as if he just wanted to fuck with Barrett.

Holliday never touched the plate but Barrett was blocking the plate anyway, which technically is not allowed, so tit for tat and I'm Ron Burgundy, Go Fuck Yourself San Diego.
I'm excited for the Rockies and can't wait to see what they can do in the playoffs.
I thought you could block it as long as the ball
by Scruffy Lefty on Oct 1, 2007 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions
nein
You can be sure
OBSTRUCTION is the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner.
Rule 2.00 (Obstruction) Comment: If a fielder is about to receive a thrown ball and if the ball is in flight directly toward and near enough to the fielder so he must occupy his position to receive the ball he may be considered "in the act of fielding a ball." It is entirely up to the judgment of the umpire as to whether a fielder is in the act of fielding a ball. After a fielder has made an attempt to field a ball and missed, he can no longer be in the "act of fielding" the ball.
There is also this:
NOTE: The catcher, without the ball in his possession, has no right to block the pathway of the runner attempting to score. The base line belongs to the runner and the catcher should be there only when he is fielding a ball or when he already has the ball in his hand.

Similar question I posed earlier
Which would hurt the longest? I hated that we were basically out of it in early Sept, but I sure would not want to be the Padres, the Mets, or even St Louis, who had climbed to within a game of the Cubs and then lost a zillion in a row.
by LongBeachDave on Oct 1, 2007 9:50 PM PDT reply actions
The Mets collapse was worse
I think with the M's, a team that everyone surprised in even being in it in the first place, dropping out, it was more of a painful resignation as the losses piled up.
The M's will be back and I think this will get thrown on the pile with the other painful M's moments... but this Mets collapse is gonna hurt for their fans for a long time.
to be fair to Hoffman, and I'm sure Sid
