Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

10/1: Open One-Game Playoff Thread

First Pitch: 4:37pm PDT

and Jake Peavy (19-6, awesome) vs. and Josh Fogg (10-9, not)

----------

A lot of people think the Padres can't hit, but their .771 road OPS actually ranks fourth in the NL. Petco just happens to murder offensive performance at a level of which even Mariner fans can't conceive. In a National League field that - let's face it - totally sucks, either one of these teams is perfectly capable of catching fire and losing in the Series. They just have to get through today first.

On the topic of one-game playoffs, you'll never guess which team was the biggest choker of all time.

I predict
Dante Bichette and Vinny Castilla hit back-to-back, pinch-hit home runs in the bottom of the 9th to win it for the Rockies.

Castilla first
because we need Bichette to do the hyper-fist pump after he hits his walkoff blast.

This has been an interesting season
Three teams - M's, Brewers, Mets - were all in great shape (at least record-wise) in late July, and they're all golfing now.  Meanwhile, the Hated Natural Rivals are playing for their lives.  As much as I wanted the four-way tie, I'll take the one-game playoff.  These things are fun.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

Interesting
If the M's had lost their one game playoff then they would have had the 14th biggest choke of all-time.

I'm torn, but I think I'm rooting for our
hated natural rivals.

The dramatist in me...
...wants to root for the Rockies, because it's a better story - plucky underdogs, outta nowhere, lots of wins at the right time, blah blah blah, but I think overall I gotta go with the Padres as well, if only because I've spent a big chunk of the last three summers watching their AAA kids.

An excellent point
and I won't be upset if the Pads lose.  But really, there's nothing better than a one-game crapshoot like this.

I don't consider the '03 Ms
chokers. They raced out to a huge lead and then played pretty much .500 ball the way in. They got passed by teams playing incredible baseball.

They let golden chances slip by, but I don't say they choked.

by Matthew on Oct 1, 2007 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

agree
the M's in 03 won like 93 games or something. That should be good for a wild card or a divsion. That just shows how much better the other teams were. Not really a choke

Mostly because I would like to see MLB pay a stiff price for stretching the postseason schedule out to a ludicrous 32 days.  Go ahead and try to play World Series games at night in Denver on October 27, 28 and 29...let's see what weather cards Mother Nature deals you.

on the mariners web site
"Lineup: Ichiro, Beltre, designated hitter Raul Ibanez, Sexson, catcher Kenji Johjima, shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt and second baseman Jose Lopez are signed through next season. Right fielder Jose Guillen, a positive force on the field and in the clubhouse, wants to return, but an abundance of outfielders -- which includes Adam Jones and Wladimir Balentien -- might persuade the organization to think young."

Mets by far
With all the expectations.  Fortunately, playing in New York, the team can expect the fan base to be understanding and forgiving.

Lucky for us
The Mets' implosion has made everyone forget ours - so we aren't likely to be reminded of it at every turn for 20 years.

Mets.
from what i can tell Randolph is a good manager yet even Jason Smith wants him to be fired.

So, about the Rockies having to worry about Peavy....

these announcers are putting me to sleep.  at least the crowds into it.

Go Rockies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Peavy has 100 pitches, and he is still in
aftert giving up 5, now 6 runs?  The Padres must be saving their bullpen for the Philadelphia series that they are never going to play.

by LongBeachDave on Oct 1, 2007 6:40 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Brady Clark is full of suck
at least you make up for your D with that awesome .704 OPS.

Question
Why can't Cameron play defense? Obviously Clark is/was a liability...I don't get why he wasn't used as a defensive replacement.  Maybe his injury is worse than I figured...but wow
I fucking hate you Mariners

I can't believe any of you
can get on Rizzs/Niehaus/Valle/Sims after listening to whoever the color guy is on radio for this game. He's spouting more "proven veteran" rhetoric in one game than I've heard all season long from the M's guys.

he is a gritty vet who just through pure team chemistry can overcome anything.
Only it turned out drug dealers and pimps appreciate art.

A shame both these teams can't be in the playoffs
but I was a Cubs fan in the 60's when Seattle didn't have a team, and Ron Santo of Franklin High School was the 3rd baseman...so I have to root for them

I hate how Heath Bell
walks towards the plate after every single pitch.  Stand on the mound and throw the ball, fatass.

How is Tucson in the viewing region or whatever for San Diego? Stupid blackouts...

Helton and Hawpe coming up
Both have had walkoffs lately...

by anky on Oct 1, 2007 7:36 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Heath Bell still in. Excellent.
Him giving up the walkoff would be most sweet. It would complete the karmic justice. Milton Bradley talked shit, and got injured for the rest of the year. Tony Gwynn talked shit, and he's a tub of goo.

Every time I hear his name, now, I go back to my parody of Rizzs calling Raul's HR-robbing catch...

Heck of a game, it looks like.  Just turned it on in the 8th.

Overtime in the tiebreaker.  Nice!

Phillies will Pheast on the winner...

Scott Schoeneweis-Roider
From Rotoworld:

"Scott Schoeneweis received six steroid shipments from Signature Pharmacy while playing for the White Sox in 2003 and 2004, ESPN is reporting.
Just keep kicking the Mets while they're down. The source who reviewed the invoices said that Schoeneweis spent $1,160 on the steroids. He received five packages from May 2003 through 2004, five of which contained testosterone and three of which contained stanozolol. Schoeneweis just finished the first year of his three-year, $10.8 million contract with the Mets. He had a 5.03 ERA in 59 innings."
