The Slimmer Felix

In light of his press conference this afternoon, a sloppy collage of a few photos re-posted from the comment thread below:

It's amazing what the first three months of exercise ever can do to a body. By no means will Felix suddenly be able to, say, fit into a seat at Fenway or pull off that Boiler Room scene from The Rock, but the jowls are gone, proving that last year's hint of a chin was no mirage. We hear stories like this every spring, when a player shows up to camp in the best shape of his life, but unlike people like Bret Boone and Player A who bulk up after a lot of steroids unsavory conduct steroids weight training, Felix dropped Brandon Fahey's weight in body fat, which (A) generally isn't done with a needle, and (B) suggests the development of a better work ethic and a higher level of maturity. It would've been easy for Felix to lean on his natural talent and coast by on stuff alone, but at 20 years old he's already learning that great success requires one to go the hard way instead. That's invaluable, and highly encouraging.

It's not just the improved attitude that's going to help him, either; being in better shape will get him ready for the season quicker and help to keep him more durable. Longer innings won't take as much out of him, he'll fatigue slower, his mechanics will hold up longer, and he'll be a better bet to pitch well down the stretch should the Mariners need to rely on him for a playoff run. Nevermind that a stronger core should keep his head more stable during delivery, possibly leading to better command of his pitches.

Felix is still a bigger kid, so I don't want to go overboard or anything, but this is the first no-downside story of the offseason, and it deserves to be celebrated. Our jaw-dropping young ace has decided to take his job seriously. How could that possibly be interpreted as anything other than fantastic news?

How much of that weight
was him shaving off the jheri curl? That was a sweet haircut. I'm not sure if I like this trade-off.

I'm glad the Joel look disappeared with Joel.

It's hard to compare the last 2 pics
since he wears a jersey that would be baggy on Boog Powell.

by Mariner John on Jan 24, 2007 11:04 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
But his white shirt is a size too big, too.

by Jeff on Jan 25, 2007 5:49 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

aaaamazing
Whatever correlation may have been found between heavier pitchers and their durability, a 20 year old kid has no business lugging 230lb around. If he really was 230, cause if there was any muscle under that pudding it was more like 250.

He's 6'3, 226 now.
Was 6'3, 246 a year ago, apparently.

awesome
good to see Felix wasn't tempted by the new BK value meal, where you can get a whopper for a buck!

All joking aside though, this is really good news.  Felix now has me excited for the M's season..sorta.

From Rotoworld:
The Mariners wanted Hernandez at 230 pounds last spring, but he was up to 246 then. Because Hernandez is in such good shape, the Mariners may decide not to put any inning restrictions on him this year. The team will still want to be very careful with the soon-to-be 21-year-old, but there may not be a set number. "It's a different day with this boy," Bavasi said. "Last year, it was real easy to say we were going to hold him to 200 innings. If we take that approach now, you guys [the media] will probably slit my throat." Really, that should be the responsibility of the fans.

Holy crap!

Last year was bad, out-of-shape Felix still learning how to pitch.  This year....

Whoosh
"or pull off that Boiler Room scene from The Rock"
I -just- watched that. What an obscure reference. That movie is about ~13 years old. Hahaha.

"There are a number of reasons why Felix Hernandez may not ever achieve his maximum performance potential. Determination isn't one of them."

Almost makes you forget he's playing a game in which his performance directly correlates to the millions he makes. What a God damned hero. XD

by Graham on Jan 26, 2007 7:40 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think any normal male from the age 20-35
have seen that movie at least 10 times and knows just about the entire movie by memory.

by Edgar for Pres on Jan 26, 2007 9:48 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

if by 10
you mean 10 dozen then you are closer to reality.

I bet I could type a single line of dialogue from anywhere in the movie and collectively we could finish the script from memory from that point forward.

by Matthew on Jan 26, 2007 10:36 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm abnormal, that's a given.
I haven't seen it once.

So bump the end of that age range down a few years, and then I'm normal again.

Of course, I can probably count on two hands the number of movies I've seen in the theater since 2001.  Take away the kid-friendly animated stuff, and I can count it on 1 hand...

I even own more DVDs than I've watched.  Quite frankly, that sucks, really.

Iceberg, right ahead!

by PositivePaul on Jan 26, 2007 11:47 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Don't worry.
I'm 24 and have never seen that movie (nor do I want to).

It's your perogative
but you should watch it.

I hate Nicholas Cage with a hot heat, and I enjoyed that movie.

Speaking of Nicholas Cage
he has the cheesiest smile of all time.

Movies, red carpets, advertisements - always the same shit-eating grin.

I just watched this movie due to your recommendation and I can't believe that I had avoided it for this long. Greatest popcorn flick ever.

I had to watch it again after not seeing it for a
few years. Awesome, awesome movie. Sean Connery is a such as freaking badass.

"Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and fuck the prom queen."

Oh yeah, that's signature material right there.

I loved that quote
Connery single handily rescued that film from Cage. I was waiting all movie for him to bitch slap him and I couldn't help but notice that Micheal Bay loves to blow everything up. I had heard that Connery might come out of retirement to do Indy 4 and that would make me a very happy panda indeed.

by Robert on Jan 27, 2007 6:02 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well
I thought you were too intelligent to enjoy 'The Rock'. I own it, myself. I've probably seen it ~7 times. I love it myself, actually...

You'd be surprised.
I know, I know, I didn't think so at first, either.

God I love that movie
I remember the day it came out on VHS and I was about 12 or 13 and I picked it up and told my Dad "I am not leaving the store without this" I stayed in the store for about an hour till my dad came back and bought it for me.

I have seen at least 75 times.

by Scruffy Lefty on Jan 30, 2007 11:24 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Alec Baldwin = eew
better movie yeah, but it's missing Harrison Ford.

Harrison Ford + Sean Connery in action move = 1 billion percent kickass.

by Matthew on Jan 28, 2007 1:03 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think
it was one of Alec Baldwin's best movies but yeah I agree that the Ford/Connery team should have just stuck together and pumped out 1000 movies.

by Edgar for Pres on Jan 28, 2007 9:05 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

No way.
Team America is Alec Baldwin's best movie.

I'm sorry but you are wrong
He actually had to act alittle in RFTRO.

by Edgar for Pres on Jan 29, 2007 9:53 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That was then; they're older now...
Sean Connery has had trouble emoting for years with the set of dentures he was wearing in "IJ and The Last Crusade" and "The Rock" and "Entrapment".  He's aged well.

Connery's appearance is an improvement over Nicholas Cage.  I don't know WHY some people (even M's "personalities like Rick Rizzs and Dave Valle) insist on getting those fakey-looking hair transplants when they actually look good/sexy without much hair, like actor Ed Harris...and Sean Connery.
