New Rumor Of The Night

Go to town.

A source indicated late Tuesday that Seattle might have interest in sending slugger Richie Sexson to the Giants and reliever Rafael Soriano to the Braves. In return, the Mariners would receive a starting pitcher (Tim Hudson) and a first baseman (Adam LaRoche).

The Braves -- who are shopping for relief help -- would then also receive relief pitcher Armando Benitez from the Giants.

Meanwhile, the Royals have offered Miguel Batista $24m over three years. Just for, you know, perspective, and all that.

Yeah, not to mention the fact
that this one seems to have a little more substance to it than last night's.

Are you stating this because . .
There seems to be a pattern between what Hickey is throwing out there and Brock following it up?

Or is this something that the Blog insiders have some info on?

Re: Are you stating this because . .
Manny was pretty much never going to come unless Bavasi added more to the haul, which he wasn't going to do.

This one, though, I've heard from a few places, and it's evolved over the past 48 hours or so, suggesting that the front offices are trying to figure out which permutation would work out best for all of them.

Strictly in terms of probability, odds are good this deal never goes down, but for a rumored three-way trade involving a couple big names it's got a reasonable shot. Mariner fans should be crossing their fingers (and toes, and various other appendages if at all possible [please don't brag if it is]).

Funny thing is
IIRC, talk, before the World Series was over, mentioned Atlanta would consider moving Hudson's contract.

This is hot stove at its best.

4.James

6.Ramirez

I don't see how this makes sense
A TOR starter and a solid young first baseman who makes almost nothing for a couple of relievers? I like the idea of this deal, but unless they're just that eager to unload Hudson's salary, Atlanta's going to want more than that.

salary is why it does make sense
they want to unload his salary and get a studly cheap reliever/starter in return.  Also, I have been reading that laroche is blocking a studly 1b prospect they have.

I wonder if there was any legs to the rumors
that other teams had inquired about trading for Pineiro?

by Matthew on Dec 5, 2006 9:33 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Also wonder if Bavasi
isn't keeping him open as a bullpen option (at a much lower contract) for next year. Pineiro was actually decent out of the pen and if we deal away Raffy...

by Matthew on Dec 5, 2006 9:34 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

do you really think so?
I just can't imagine Joel back under any circumstances, but you bring up a good point.  If raffy does get traded, do they give Joel the league minimum and bring him back? I wouldnt say he was good out of the pen, but he was somewhat effective.

I just can't see it happeing.  The M's have to many guys that could do just as good, if not better than Pinata (havent used that one in a while)

Do I think so? No.
I was just thinking aloud.

JoePa in the pen posted a 4:1 SO/non-I BB rate and knocked his hit rate down some 40%. But I agree, depending on what moves they make (send Jake Woods to ATL too!), the bullpen is still composed of 7 from:

Putz
Huber
Sherrill
Mateo
O'Flaherty
Fruto
Green
Jimenez
Woods
Lehr
Baek
Lowe*

I don't think he was offered arby, which doesn't mean a whole lot.

If we do this
I doesnt seem like anything atlanta would want 2 do. Hudson is hardly a guy that is going to have the same bad season and adam laroche flew under the radar but was really quite productive.

I guess i can see that they NEED alot of bullpen help but i dont see their gain.

I would still love this trade because we dont lose anything(much) by exchanging laroche for sexon and in my opinion we need sp more than relief. Besides we have enough young relief to last for a long time.

by ZeZetheX on Dec 5, 2006 9:13 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Think about it like this
a lot of us in the mariner fandom would be willing to trade sexson for a bag of balls.  Same thing with atlanta and hudson.  I wouldn't look at it like what is atlanta gaining, what they are losing is the more important thing to them.

If anyone read the article they would know were not persueing him. Yay thats one less rumor and thats one less waste of money. well i guess manny is never a waste. but It will be good news for snelling and jones.

by ZeZetheX on Dec 5, 2006 9:16 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

BTW,
I L-O-V-E Tim Hudson's groundballsiness

I'd send a couple decent prospects along with Sexson + Soriano to get this deal done. No Jones, Clement caliber, but Balentien, Garciaparra, Chen, etc.

Hudson's contract is perfectly fine in this market (it's the same as Vicente Padilla's for reference), love the idea of trying to restructure the money though, making it more even across the years. Make it like 12, 10, 10 and you're golden.

LaRoche, not sure if he's arb-eligible this offseason or not. He's right on the cusp of 3 years of service time.

Here's a thought
throw in Reed to Atlanta. Insurance for them for when Andruw leaves. They'd have to be interested in that.

by Matthew on Dec 5, 2006 9:48 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Seems to good to be true
I don't see how this would work.

The M's get a sweet deal.  No need to rehash the details.

The Giants would be getting a power hitting first baseman for an overpaid closer who has been injured.

The Braves give up a lot for two relievers.

Really, the M's are the only team who is giving up and recieving anything remotely close to equal value.  The Giants give up a guy who has nearly no value, and get something of value.  I would be asking the Giants to kick in a prospect or two, and send them to Atlanta.

by Jerry on Dec 5, 2006 9:33 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Ya
But i dont see much change for the mariners. The first basemen are alot alike. And were exchanging a reliever for a starter. Soriano is an up and coming quality reliever but hudson is seasond starter with big salary and a couple of tough seasons against the nl east.

by ZeZetheX on Dec 5, 2006 9:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Ya but relief pitching has bit Atlanta
in the ass the last couple of years. So I can see the desperation on there part.

by Scruffy Lefty on Dec 5, 2006 9:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well
look at some of the other names that've been floated out there in connection with LaRoche. I think it's safe to say that Atlanta undervalues the guy. The deal makes a little sense because they get their cheap young reliever for LaRoche and Benitez gives them a closer while relieving them of Hudson's long-term salary burden.

But yeah, Schuerholz doesn't come out real shiny in this permutation. If I'm Bavasi, I'm throwing guys like Balentien and Justin Thomas out there all willy-nilly in an effort to push him over the hump and get him to accept the deal, because whatever happens the M's are pretty much guaranteed of making out like bandits.

I think they want to ditch LaRoche
and move Salty to 1B since McCann is obviously going to stick at C.

by Matthew on Dec 5, 2006 10:29 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Salty's value
Goes down -real- fast if he has to play 1B though. They're probably better off trading him.

by Graham on Dec 5, 2006 11:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Other Niceties
Here are other reasons why this deal would rock:

The M's would be getting Hudson and LaRoche while actually cutting payroll.  Sexson and Soriano would have cost about $17 million.  Hudson and LaRoche will cost $7.5 million (with a bump to at least $16 next year).  That cuts $10 million off the budget.

The M's would have enough money to add a few players.  If need be, they could still sign Schmidt.  They could also add a reliever to replace Soriano.  They would have a ton of financial space to work with.

Second, this move would not cost the M's draft pick compensation.  They would be adding a very good starter and a cheap lefthanded bat (with upside) with no penalty.

Again, seems to good to be true.

by Jerry on Dec 5, 2006 9:40 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

That would be a good rotation
Felix, Hudson, Schmidt, Thomson (assuming he falls this way), Washburn

by Gomez on Dec 5, 2006 9:43 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Schmidt would be difficult
unless, again, they found a way to frontload his contract to take advantage of Hudson's low 2007 pricetag.

But we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves. This whole thing is just a rumor with a little more substance than usual.

by Jeff on Dec 5, 2006 9:45 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The Ms still have 10-15M in payroll room though
so, making this trade gives them 20+M in 07 payroll space. Enough to frontload Schmidt and ink Thompson and go with a rotation of:

Felix, Schmidt, Hudson, Washburn, Thompson

And if they wanted to clear some more space and take a bit of a risk, they could deal Broussard to save another 4M, try to pick up a cheap one-sided hitter and go with Snelling at DH.

by Matthew on Dec 5, 2006 10:31 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I really don't see the money for schmidt
if this deal goes.  Three starters would be making 35 million or so in 08, 09.  No way they could manage that and even if they could spending 1/3 of your roll on your 2,3,4 starters is a sure fire way of sending your team into the toilet.

Starter going into next year, I won't be complaining. At all. However, this deal just seems way too good, so I'm betting on it falling through.

OT:
Did anybody notice that Dave Neihaus has once again been named a Frick award finalist?

Hopefully he wins it this year.

Hmm
this deal is too good for the M's for is to actually happen.  It would make me too happy.

Adam LaRoche = Lefty Sock
I'm most excited about LaRoche in Safeco field

by dlinsley on Dec 6, 2006 7:28 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Deal with Angels for LaRoche
nixed because Stoneman wouldn't include Shields (apparently).

If true, that bodes well for this rumor as it seems like Atlanta is willing to part with him for a top line RP.

by Matthew on Dec 6, 2006 7:56 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
I'm pretty sure they've explored LaRoche for Mike Gonzalez. It's clear what they're looking for in return, and Soriano fills the role nicely.

by Jeff on Dec 6, 2006 8:55 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Go get Huddy
Bill,
Make the trade.  Then sign Zito.  Hell for good measure go get Mulder too.  Since we couldnt beat Oakland last year, lets go get their best three pitchers from the last 5 years to go after the AL West!  The big three reunites!

Rotation of Zito, Felix, Hudson, Mulder and Washburn (of course in about July)..so fill in Woods until then wouldnt be bad and VERY lefthanded.

by tkballer22 on Dec 6, 2006 7:58 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

signing Zito
would erase all the good fortune from a Hudson swap.

Barry Zito sucks

by Matthew on Dec 6, 2006 8:02 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

methinks...
a change of scenery would do him good.  He's still young and still lefthanded.

by tkballer22 on Dec 6, 2006 8:05 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
it does tend to help pitchers out when they move from an amazingly spacious ballpark with good defenders.

But, really, I'm interested in how moving from Oakland will improve his walk rate.

by Matthew on Dec 6, 2006 8:53 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Walk rates
Are part of the park factors too, although hardly a big one. I'll get round to crunching all the numbers when I have more time, but I'm fairly sure stadiums have different effects on free passes.

by Graham on Dec 6, 2006 10:48 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

they do
but

A) it's minimal
and
B) it's the HR happy ballparks that tend to induce more walks. Oakland is not one of the places.

by Matthew on Dec 6, 2006 10:51 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yep
True and true

by Graham on Dec 6, 2006 10:58 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Heres what I like about Zito
12-9, 3.66 v. ANA (6-4, 2.29 @ LAA)
17-5, 3.76 v. TEX (11-1, 3.75 @ TEX)
12-2, 3.62 v. SEA (3-2, 4.06 @ Safeco)
51-30, 3.66 @ OAKLAND

Yah, we could be scared off by his 1.5 K/BB, but honestly we could sign one of the best pitchers in our league away from our rival. If we dont get him, lets just hope he doesnt end up in Arlington.

by tkballer22 on Dec 6, 2006 9:20 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Hudson's splits
1.8 K/BB
13-6, 3.49 v. ANA (9-3, 2.90 @ Ana)
12-6, 3.32 v. SEA (7-2, 3.08 @ Safeco)
6-5, 4.01 v. TEX ( 2-4, 6.13 @ Tex)
46-15, 3.04 @ OAKLAND

1 ROY, 3 CY YOUNG, 1 MVP

I think a switch back to AL would help

Heh...
Great googly moogly.

by Jeff on Dec 6, 2006 9:27 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
It's translated on Rotoworld for the benefit of us non-Spanish speakers:

Manny Ramirez could be traded to the Dodgers or Mariners on Wednesday, according to an ESPN Deportes reports.
The report states that the Dodgers are willing to part with Brad Penny and two prospects, while the Mariners have offered both Richie Sexson and Adrian Beltre. There's little chance of the Red Sox taking back both players from the Mariners, but they could conceivably take one along with J.J. Putz.

Please don't let this be the prelude to a whole season of Willie Boom-Boom at third base...

by Alex B on Dec 6, 2006 9:30 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

shenanigans
the Ms already have a crowded OF and DH spot and not a single person in system capable of playing 3B. I don't see them moving Beltre

by Matthew on Dec 6, 2006 9:35 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I hope you're right
It certainly doesn't make sense to move Beltre.  But does Sexson really make sense for Boston?

by Alex B on Dec 6, 2006 9:39 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not very much.
That is, unless they're going to (A) move Youkilis into the outfield (and either trade Pena or make him the 4th OF), or (B) trade Sexson to somebody else.

by Jeff on Dec 6, 2006 9:41 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh yeah, or (C)
trade Lowell and move Youkilis back to third. But still, they can do better.

by Jeff on Dec 6, 2006 9:43 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Heh
See below.

by Alex B on Dec 6, 2006 9:54 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'd be inclined to think (B) here
From what I've read, it seems that Boston definitely want to hold on to Pena as the jury is still out on Crisp.

So, to borrow from other rumours, this could ultimately end in some subset of LaRoche/Hudson/Lowry going to Boston.

Of course, an option (C) could be to trade Lowell, move Youkilis back to third and the put Sexson (or his trade replacement) in at first.

Oh man: even if you don't like Boston it's hard not to get excited by this sort of intrigue...

by Alex B on Dec 6, 2006 9:54 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm...
with all the Hudson-LaRoche talk, I'd rather do that trade, then take on Manny.

Please.

by Matthew on Dec 6, 2006 9:38 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Right now
they stand at ~$97m for seven players.

With Matsuzaka (who'll sign), it's probably ~$110m for eight players or so.

Without Manny and with Beltre/Sexson, it would be like $118m for nine.

But that deal won't happen. It doesn't make sense.

By the way
before everyone gets carried away, remember: this rumor doesn't make any sense. It's not going to happen.

by Jeff on Dec 6, 2006 9:45 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

and really
the hudson-laroche rumour is way more fun.

Manny is great and all, but Hudson-LaRoche (and keeping Jones, Putz, et al) makes our team far better.

by Matthew on Dec 6, 2006 9:46 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yah.
Believe it when it gets announced by the team.

This just doesn't pass the sniff test...for EITHER team.

by rtang on Dec 6, 2006 9:55 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That shows you how awesome that LaRoche
trade would be. Because when I heard the Manny deal might happen instead, I felt a little dissapointed.

This looks good
12:59 p.m., from Peter Gammons
* The Red Sox's self-imposed deadline to trade Manny Ramirez has expired, and unless a potential trade partner suddenly sweetens their offer, it appears the enigmatic slugger will remain in Boston.
