Fiscal Insanity Rules The Day

Lost in the midst of all the Alfonso Soriano hoopla is the contract Justin Speier just got from the Angels - $18m over four years. Speier's a perfectly fine righty, but he's 33 years old and good relievers don't tend to last very long, so this is wasteful at best and stupid at worst. If nothing else, it's interesting that Bill Stoneman's the GM who handed out this contract, considering he's the same guy who's built strong bullpens out of journeyman nobodies like Ben Weber, Brendan Donnelly, Al Levine, Lou Pote, and Scot Shields in recent seasons. I, for one, am completely in favor of Anaheim taking steps backwards.

Anyway, I don't really have anything to say about the Soriano deal that hasn't already been said by Dave or Adam Morris. Forget about years 6, 7, and 8 of this contract; I'd be pretty concerned about years 1, 2, and 3. This might be the worst contract in baseball history, and it's more than a little comforting knowing that the Mariners weren't the ones who gave it out.

This market is ridiculous. Run away, as fast as you can.

Update: there are rumblings that the last few years of Soriano's deal may be options, but even if that's true, ye gods. Still.

Looks like Catalanotto
is heading to Texas as well, on a three year deal. This market is out of whack. Hell, the M's might be able to turn Sexson into Markasis, Loewen and Penn in this market. <--(it's a joke, just to clarify)

Just wondering
how much is Catalanotto looking to sign for?

by Edgar for Pres on Nov 19, 2006 3:19 PM PST up reply actions

Not sure
but I heard it was DeRosa money

by Trent on Nov 19, 2006 4:10 PM PST up reply actions

That doesn't even make sense
Was their bullpen even an issue in '06?  I don't even get the idea behind awarding this contract in the first place.

by Gomez on Nov 19, 2006 2:12 PM PST reply actions

Their bullpen
sucked after KRod and Shields, and they're looking to trade Shields.

And the insanity begins!
Good grief.

I am worried
How much money will we pay Schmidt next year? :(

by Graham MacAree on Nov 19, 2006 3:16 PM PST reply actions

$32 million
plus an option for $45 in 2008, just to makes sure that the M's set the market and dictate the prices.

In all seriousness, I've never thought they were going to get him for less than $13 million. I wonder if Washburn would draw any interest in this market?

More good news about the Speier signing.
He was a type A free agent, so the Angels just lost a first round draft pick to the Blue Jays.

My nightmares are filled
with visions of Brandon Wood and Howie Kendrick for the next 6 years.

(No, not really)

Willie Bloomquist and Mike Hargrove suck

i am going to enjoy this right now
because it won't be long until the M's make some pretty dumb signings themselves. For now, it's nice to be on the outside looking in.

At least...
we can be pretty sure they won't be shelling out $16 million in guranteed money for middle relief or setup guys.

Twins
How smart does Terry Ryan feel for locking Santana up for 4/40 when he did?

They'll be paying the best pitcher in baseball 2/25 for what would've been his first two free agent years.

There's a lesson here for Bavasi/whoever's in charge once Felix becomes arby-eligible.

by helfgott on Nov 19, 2006 7:19 PM PST reply actions

heck
same with the M's and Raul.  After the year he had, I can only imagine how much money he would of gotten.

Obviously Raul isnt' on the same level as sizemore or Santana.

WIN IT FOR RAFFY!!!

Right
Because he was just entering arbitration, and additionally, was/is slated for a high arc in his career.

Or, it was just a mediocre move turned out better than expected.

I think
it was a mediocre moved turned out MUCH better than expected, but Ibanez would proably be getting some insane contract for 2007 if he was a FA.  If he keeps is production up then the M's got a great deal, IMO.

Fair enough
If for some reason he keeps it up, they got a steal.

If they would DH him and platoon against lefties I'd be even happier, though.

by Josh @ Lookout Landing on Nov 19, 2006 11:04 PM PST up reply actions

Hmm. I wonder.
Stat fans are convinced that these moves are nuts and far too rich for teams' budgets.

However, a smart GM could do economic projections, guess that the market could go up substantially (particularly with good internal models that outsiders would have no access to) and make a calculated gamble that these signings would make economic sense.

Not that I think Bavasi or this front office is THAT smart, but perhaps there are smarter GMs/front offices out there that can do that...

by rtang on Nov 19, 2006 11:23 PM PST up reply actions

Bavasi has a history of locking up his young stars
So if he's still around when it's time to do so, that's one area that I'm sure Bavasi will get done.

On the flipside
I wonder how much other GMs locking up their incumbent stars pre-free-agency had to do with the current market being so crazy.  As the supply goes down, the demand for a given FA goes up.

by Gomez on Nov 19, 2006 8:52 PM PST up reply actions

Just thinking about it
but it would be interesting to sit down with Bavasi and write up some sort of book about what's actually gone on in his tenure and how stuff actually works behind the scenes.  That would be really interesting.

by Edgar for Pres on Nov 19, 2006 8:58 PM PST reply actions

Yeah
We kinda got that for Moneyball, but that book was more about a unique approach rather than a Life of the GM book.  Beane in general isn't the most orthodox of GMs anyway.
