Pass the Crack Pipe in the front office...

According to the Seattle P-I today:

"Had Seattle acquired Pierre, an official of one club, who had knowledge of the Mariners' plans, said they would have offered center fielder Jeremy Reed and left-handed reliever Matt Thornton to the Oakland Athletics for left-hander Barry Zito."

Star-divide

...the article continues...

"Billy Beane, the Oakland GM, is fond of Reed. But that would have been a stretch without additional prospects -- a scarce commodity for the Mariners.

"Our guys figured out how to set up the dominoes," Bavasi said. "I couldn't get the first one to fall."

The front office is beginning to sound like one of the morons I play fantasy baseball with who makes ridiculous offers and wild claims about how close he was to a "BIG DEAL".

The chance that the M's could have acquired Zito for Reed and Thornton seems as close to nil as well... nil.

Why?
Thornton is like a much harder throwing version of Zito with one twist, he sucks.

Our FO is not the only one passin' the pipe
from rotoworld:

"The Orioles and Angels discussed swapping Javy Lopez and Darin Erstad, but talks have cooled off now.
It was the Angels reportedly deciding it wasn't worth it. We're sure they'd be interested in Steve Finley for Lopez."

Bavasi
is in complete denial. Nothing short of Felix and Reed would have gotten Zito. Lets face it we have a bunch of midling prospects who do play well (or have been well managed) but nothing anyone really wants.

I don't think it is outrageous
They are likely to lose Zito anyway.  This way they would have a great prospect for CF who plays gold glove caliber defense.  Not something to laugh at.  The only ridiculous part is that Beane would trade to a division rival.

They have Kotsay
so I don't know why they would pine away for Reed. Unless they were trying to trade Kotsay. But I don't see Beane trading Zito for Reed and Thornton, no way no how.

Lets see...
Carl Everett coming to Seattle rumor or silence, hmmmmmm that's a toughy. The thing is I'm tired of all the rumored bad deals, I want some rumored good deals too.

And in all essence
I would be stoked if Bavasi had done a makeover of the roster.  What you put out there was NOT working 4 out of 5 days.  Show me something else.  I want to show up to the ball park expecting to win, or just knowing we might win.  Not, well is felix pitching or not.

Did you notice
the article also had the M's offer to Florida for Pierre: Asdrubal Cabrera, Rene Rivera, and Emiliano Fruto.
