3/25: Holy Hell It's A Regular Season Open Game Thread

I'm posting this as a diary because who the balls is watching baseball at three in the morning?

Graham's note: Me. Lineups.

First Pitch: 3:05am PDT this isn't a typo

Pedroia 2B Buck RF Youkilis 1B Ellis 2B Ortiz DH Barton 1B Ramirez LF Cust DH Lowell 3B Brown LF Drew Moss RF Crosby SS Varitek C Hannahan 3B Ellsbury CF Suzuki C Lugo SS R. Sweeney CF ---------- ----------

Matsuzaka (0-0, 0.00) Blanton (0-0, 0.00)

Red Sox: 81 home games in Boston
A's: 79 home games in Oakland, two home games in Japan where everyone will be cheering for Matsuzaka and Okajima

The East Coast bias has reared its head early this year.

Isn't this how Graham and EM always feel?
I am never moving to Europe. At least in Asia the games begin after you wake up in the morning. NHK used to broadcast every Mariners game, but now I believe it is the Red Sox.

Exactly it
We're only 7 hours ahead this week but return to our own summer time next week and will be back to 8 hours come Opening Day, meaning that those 7pm PT games will begin at 3am for us.

Welcome to our world. A world where you plan your sleep schedule two weeeks in advance so as not to make ridiculous plans to be out of the house from 8-11pm as that's when you're making up your sleep.

A world where you've just been watching the Mariners take on the Angels for four and a half hours and somehow you're late for work.

A world where Dave Niehaus is drowned out by the sound of morning birdsong.

I feel sorta dirty saying this, but since the division's on the line:

GO BOSTON!!!!

Honestly -- if it weren't for their shitty fans, I could probably actually root for Boston.  When they're playing the Yankees or anyone in our division, I actually DO root for Boston...

We can make it a win-win situation, then...
Daisuke gets plastered for 15 hits and 6+ runs, but Boston beats Oakland 10-9.  Okajima comes into the second game and gives up a grand slam, but Boston wins the game still 8-4...

Two games out of 81?
I guess it would depend upon which ones. If it was Texas at home, for instance, nobody would feel all that enraged, but if it was two games of the only NYY home series then there'd be an obvious right to be a bit p'd off.

Speaking of which, why are these games in Japan both being attributed to Oakland - wouldn't it just be fairer to take off one home game each rather than 2 from Oakland and one from Boston?

Even Boston visits?
I've got no enthusiasm to check, but these must be two of their bigger pay-days of the season.

On the subject, I don't recall seeing any notes on what, other than exposure, benefits the competing teams can expect from these games. Seen plenty on the $40k/player, but not a lot on the teams. Are Oakland getting the profits of the gate receipts or something?

I like the NFL idea where it's rotated between teams every season.

Curious
I guess that could be influenced by how EI are distributed.

Presumably they're skewed so that sides with ~81 win seasons play more EI games.

But are the total amount of RS/RA sufficient in those innings to amount to a real difference?

I have no idea
I just thought of the fact that playing enough extra innings with low RS/RA might draw the pythagorean record closer to .500

by Graham MacAree on Mar 25, 2008 6:39 AM PDT up reply actions

It surely will
but I think that a team that goes into extra innings enough times will come out of those games playing just about .500 +/- 4. Even if a team has a great, deep bullpen and a solid bench or whatever it is that makes a team good in longer games, its just too small a time frame (like 10 AB per team per game? 20 max.) to have anything but heavily randomized results.

How in the name of Emett Brown?
How did my message appear there? There's no way in hell I could have posted that in 12 seconds!

The A's don't make outs on the bases though...
Well, obviously they do, but holy crap that was stupid.

I wouldn't have even gone for that
in a video game with Ichiro as my runner.

Yeah
That was the dumbest move ever. Good for us. But the A's still won't die. All hail the opponents of the AL West, we need all the help we can get this year.

by phil333 on Mar 25, 2008 6:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I know
But the A's are my second favourite team, and although I should rationally root for them to lose I like that team and their fans.

Stupid Brown.

God I hate you so much more now Emil Brown
God you are clearly the master of super-faggotry Emil.

Billy Beane better cut his stupid ass for this incredibly small, incredibly dumb sample size.

It's nice to have game thread emotion back.

We're half a game above last in the division!

So no mid-morning re-run of the game?

The new SBN format is to blame.
I suggest you take it out on those responsible.

Unavailable
For some reason they've not made the option to rewatch the full game, highlights or condensed version.

Normally up pretty soon after it's finished. Strange.

It's replaying on ESPN2 right now
I would assume that after it replays there it will be available to mlb.tv viewers, maybe?

Yeah that sucks.
I had my night planned out.  I was going to get home from work at 7pm, load up Opening Day and have it on in the background whilst I played MLB 08 The Show.  My life is now incomplete and I am not happy.  I wanted to see how badly I lagged with the new Premium mlb.tv service.
And to think, I could have chosen to support the Yankees or Red Sox...

Why haven't we updated the standings yet?
In the sidebar.  Oakland lost.  Runs were scored for and against.  I want my standings, dammit.

by Llewdor on Mar 25, 2008 12:58 PM PDT reply actions

Because I'm lazy
And I couldn't find the standings box.

by Graham MacAree on Mar 25, 2008 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions

It's over there
on the right sidebar.  The one that extends all the way to the end of my monitor, in exactly the way that the new format does not.

Not going to bother
since with the re-design tomorrow they'll take care of it automatically.
