You know what drives me crazy? If you have (say) a guy on first, and he gets thrown out stealing, and then the batter hits a homer, there's always at least one guy who pipes up to say "should've scored two runs." Always. It's the same thing every single time a runner makes an out on the basepaths. Guess what? It isn't true. Context dictates strategy. If there's no one on base, the pitcher, hitter, and fielders will take a different approach than they would were there a man on first. A guy will see different pitches and different defensive positioning, and he might take a different swing. So therefore the result will almost always be different as well. Saying "that homer should've scored two runs" doesn't have any more or less validity than saying "I'm glad that guy was caught stealing because if he were still on base we would've hit into a double play." Every event in baseball has an effect on the next one, and having a runner thrown out completely changes the situation.

Now that that's off my chest, here's to Miguel Batista's final start of the season. I'm sure this won't be laborious.

Argh
same lineup as last night. My parents come all the way from Idaho to come see these games, and this is what we get. I mean, I understand Clement DHing. But Morse? Where's Balentien and Jones?

by Corco on Sep 29, 2007 6:01 PM PDT reply actions

Simple,
when McLaren said he'd start playing the kids more once they were out of the race, he meant one rookie a game.
My name is Matt Foley. I am 35 years old, I am divorced and I live in A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!

by Coach Owens on Sep 29, 2007 6:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I'm not making it through this one
Tomorrow should be interesting, though. Didn't Mac say he'd play all the kids in one game this series? If he sticks by that, we could have a AJ-Reed-Wlad outfield, and all sorts of other hijinks...

by Nick S on Sep 29, 2007 6:09 PM PDT reply actions

That's an interesting topic actually
It may be true that context dictates strategy but I personally find it difficult to not wonder what would happen if the guy wasn't caught stealing or that one guy hadn't booted the ball put in play that cost the team the out that would've gotten them out of the inning.

But yea, I think "that should've been a <insert event here>" if more of an emotional reaction than a logical one.

by ThundaPC on Sep 29, 2007 6:31 PM PDT reply actions

Oh, I think it's fascinating.
Unfortunately it's the very essence of something that's 100% impossible to research.

by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 29, 2007 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, the game
Unless Adam Jones has an injury keeping him out the remainder of the season I'm starting to think McLaren likes Jeff Clement more.

by ThundaPC on Sep 29, 2007 6:33 PM PDT reply actions

In McLaren's world, Morse > Jones too.
He could just have easily put Raul at 1st and AJ in  left.

by FWombat on Sep 29, 2007 6:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh I'm an old school Raul hater...

by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 29, 2007 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I find his sense of entitlement annoying.
I can't say I really blame him though, I bet most of the guys in the bigs think of themselves before the team, they just don't discuss it with the media.

by JI on Sep 29, 2007 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions

You don't get to the ML level
without thinking that you deserve to play every day. AJ thinks the same thing, even if he doesn't say it to anyone.

by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 29, 2007 7:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't really take offense to what he said
but it's a double standard.

If, say, Rickey Henderson or Gary Sheffield had said something similar they would have been shamed by the media.

Yeah
What we need are some stories about how our clubhouse veterans are assholes. That'll get the media to loosen its liplock a little bit.

UW's offense looked like crap.  USC's miscues only made it a close game.

do you think Blowers really finds Sims and the Rally Fries signs funny, or is he humoring them for the camera?

Is the Dirt or Persperation flavors legit or are they supposed to taste nasty?

Haven't personally tried those
But knowing Jones Soda, they taste like their name.

Just got a notice that my GS52 sponsorship on BB-ref is going to expire.

Problem is, he's gotten so good that he's gotten more expensive.

you know
it would be really funny if a player sponsored himself or another player and put up something really un-PC.

Like if Jose Guillen sponsored Mike Scioscia's page and put DIAF or something.

Jorge Campillo & Vlad...
Now THAT would be funny!

if Ichiro doesn't get caught stealing
and adrian beltre singled instead of grounding out and jose lopez had hit into a double play instead of striking out in the 6th and willie lead off the 7th with a hit THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A GRAND SLAM!!!!1111

What's wrong with Clement's swing?
It's so slow he can't get it across the strike zone fast enough and is forced to draw walks....

do we have enough people for an All-Annoying Team?
CF Granderson, 3B Metcalf, 2B Roberts, 1B Palmerio(?), C Mauer, RF Guerrero

SP Lackey, SP Rasner

ESPN has been hyping the women's world cup
and Team USA.  Well, Team USA got punked by Brazil, and now they're trying to hype a Germany vs Brazil final, like anyone gives a crap.  I don't even think soccer fans give a crap.

by Gomez on Sep 29, 2007 10:16 PM PDT reply actions

Seriously
It's so stilted and pedestrian that watching rec leaguers is better.

by Gomez on Sep 30, 2007 9:14 AM PDT up reply actions

mostly agree
though I think the Brazilian team plays well.

by Matthew on Sep 30, 2007 11:05 AM PDT up reply actions

They had some moves
I think I'm more annoyed with the Team USA hype and that the Women's World Cup was basically created to give them a trophy to win.
