9/17: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 7:05pm PDT

Ichiro CF Stewart LF Beltre 3B Barton 1B Ibanez "LF" Swisher CF Guillen RF Cust RF Broussard 1B Ellis 2B Vidro DH Johnson DH Johjima C Suzuki C Lopez 2B Hannahan 3B Betancourt SS Murphy SS ---------- ----------

Beluga Tits (13-11, 4.67)   Haren (14-7, 3.11)

From yesterday's AP game summary:

"The whole infield came to the mound, everybody was real positive telling me I was going to get out of it," Sonnanstine said of the bases-loaded, no-out jam in the sixth. "It made me believe."

We know the Tampa Bay infield isn't real accustomed to seeing pitchers work out of these situations - the D'Rays have been abused with the bases loaded more than any other team in the league. We also know the Tampa Bay infield isn't psychic, because the Tampa Bay infield is terrible, and you'd think that psychic players would position themselves better before each play. So what we're left with is that the Tampa Bay infield is either really supportive or a bunch of liars, and Andy Sonnanstine is gullible. What's that, Andy? Yes, of course I've taken good care of your place while you were on the road. No parties or candlelit dinners with your girlfriend at all. Would I lie to you?

Jack Cust & the A's welcome you to Oakland

I can't imagine there will be too many folks at the Coliseum for these games.  Foul balls should be easy to come by.  I'll be out there on Wednesday afternoon for the Felix game, though.

Here's to a good series!

It's really kind of incredible to look at
how quickly they've turned having the best player in baseball into whatever it is they have to show for him today. A little money and Brad Wilkerson, I guess.

$17m for Soriano.
Way to completely overfuckingreact doucebags. Enjoy having Mike Young under contract until the year 2364.

I only bring it up because Blow mentioned "Chan Ho."

by JI on Sep 17, 2007 7:28 PM PDT up reply actions

negative on the money
since they're still paying about $10M a year of A-Rod's salary. Which will cease once A-Rod opts out after this season.

by Matthew on Sep 17, 2007 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I feel real good about myself
because I thought that trade was a terrible fucking idea at the time. It is very satisfying to see that it has been even more awful than I imagined.

Texas just might be better of with A-Rod and Chris Young.

by JI on Sep 17, 2007 7:33 PM PDT up reply actions

That was Ichiro
demonstrating to those who question his grittyness that he actually doesn't need to lay out for balls by actually outrunning the ball, and then coming back for it.

it's been better than the year I had EI.

I wonder what would happen if a baseball team
hired smart people to be broadcasters and front officers.

by Matthew on Sep 17, 2007 7:37 PM PDT reply actions

yeah, I was thinking about this
would the sport become boring?

It's a little funny to think that I am able to earn money solely because teams hire stupid people and piss off their smart fans who turn to blogs instead.

Would I enjoy baseball more if the Ms made the right decision everytime? The answer to this haunts me.

by Matthew on Sep 17, 2007 8:03 PM PDT up reply actions

In theory
if every team made the right move every time, then eventually baseball would just be consistently won by the teams with the most resources.

If the Mariners, however, made the right move every time, and only the Mariners, then I think the sport would indeed be fun, if excessively rewarding.

"Arizona's #1 draft pick in 1997. Cust is learning left field on the fly and will probably never be better than adequate. When you hit like this, it doesn't really matter. Tremendous plate discipline and above-average power, even as a teenager. After last year's problems at South Bend, the Diamondbacks will move him up slowly, starting him this year back in middle A-ball. ETA: 2001."
