Isn't Mark Ellis a free agent after this season?
Is this season just a fluke or can he be a decent hitter going forward. i know he is very good defensively.
You may run like Mays but you hit like shit

by houseofprime2 on Sep 12, 2007 6:37 PM PDT reply actions

He's 30-something
Secondbasemen don't typically age well, and Ellis isn't exactly textbook representation of health.

This season is probably his last hurrah.

I'd take Kent for one year.
Or Castillo for one discounted year, if Lopez brought back an interesting return.

by JI on Sep 12, 2007 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

LA has team option on Kent
Luis Castillo will be 32, sports a career 93 OPS+, and is making 5.5M this year, I'd rather give Lopez another year.

by Matthew on Sep 12, 2007 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Me too.
I'd only trade Lopez for someone else's Brandon Phillips.

I was taking Castillo @ 1/3, at that point you might as well go to Nick Green.

Okay what about free agent ss?
Then maybe we can move them to 2b, I'm desperate here.

A's have a $5 million option for 2008
They have said they intend to exercise it and keep Ellis.  His OPS has varied from .684 to .861, so .779 is just a few HRs above his .753 career OPS.  He's actually been fairly durable, after missing the one season completely after Crosby creamed him in a collision in spring training.

From the M's site:

Ramirez stays in rotation: After Horacio Ramirez's tough outing Monday (1 2/3 innings, five runs), there was thought that he would lose his spot in the rotation to young Ryan Feierabend. But after sleeping on it, manager John McLaren said he's going to keep things as they are.

"I'm going to give Ramirez the ball Saturday," McLaren said. "Really, he's not struggling any more than our other starters..."

Horacio actually has the lowest ERA among SP over the last 17 games.

Yet another jam-shot base hit
this bullpen is getting abused in all the wrong ways.

by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 12, 2007 9:18 PM PDT reply actions

is that Huber??
where the hell have you been.
LET WLAD BAT!!!!

by MFAN on Sep 12, 2007 9:19 PM PDT reply actions

I think that Ichiro
hit was the most predictable run-scoring base hit all year. He still looks pissed off from missing that fly ball. Anyone got the Ichiro death glare? Raul better let the batboy open and clear his locker from a poisonous snake in the morning.

GameDay said
Pitch 5 was a swinging strike...that would have been Strike 3...what happened???

by LongBeachDave on Sep 12, 2007 9:27 PM PDT reply actions

Those don't exist.
Umpires were so confident that they get the call right all the time in fact, that they bitched at Gameday to take the strikezone off of it.  ...wait...

by BrettJMiller on Sep 12, 2007 9:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Did Sims say
the A's are TRYING to build a threat?

Mission accomplished.

by eponymous coward on Sep 12, 2007 9:31 PM PDT reply actions

Huh?
Should've left him in.

by ThundaPC on Sep 12, 2007 9:31 PM PDT reply actions

Huber has never been through a war
yet gets high leverage outs...go figure.
LET WLAD BAT!!!!

by MFAN on Sep 12, 2007 9:32 PM PDT reply actions

No wonder our bullpen
has been so wasted lately....8 pitchers come in to pitch 3 innings.

And we all know GS52 will probably come in and be wild a little and walk a run in...

I fucking hate you Mariners

by kentroyals5 on Sep 12, 2007 9:32 PM PDT reply actions

Right
and then Sherrill won't pitch for two weeks.

I honestly think McLaren's scared to death of seeing a right-handed pitcher face a left-handed batter.  Like, seriously.  Like he'll keel over and die if he sees it.

by StevenH on Sep 12, 2007 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions

The TB defense
has been 138 plays below average this season.

by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 12, 2007 9:33 PM PDT reply actions

Gee, who'da thunk it
Sherrill gets a PH.

Way to overmanage, Mac.

by eponymous coward on Sep 12, 2007 9:34 PM PDT reply actions

Mr. Extra Medium on to pinch hit!
As Red calls him.  Look at those painted on pants.  Try a Large, Piazza.  Extra Medium down to pinch hitting...wow.

by BrettJMiller on Sep 12, 2007 9:34 PM PDT reply actions

Hey good
our overmanaging has now been negated.

by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 12, 2007 9:34 PM PDT reply actions

Not so much.
Awesome. :(

by eponymous coward on Sep 12, 2007 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

What I meant was
McLaren went to all the trouble to get to a lefty, only to have the A's predictably pinch-hit.

by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 12, 2007 9:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Because the umpires
have never seen a team lose 23 in a row, and figured we'd be the perfect team for this.

by eponymous coward on Sep 12, 2007 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Hahahahaha
One of those 'just in case you thought things were gonna change' moments.

by Gomez on Sep 12, 2007 9:36 PM PDT reply actions

I still blame Mac
keep throwing the same over-worked pitchers out there day after day without looking at things called stats/splits.  F U Mac
I fucking hate you Mariners

"Long run for Raul"
Everything is a long run for Raul....

by BrettJMiller on Sep 12, 2007 9:37 PM PDT reply actions

After 30 years...
I am finally ready for this team to move to Tampa Bay

by LongBeachDave on Sep 12, 2007 9:37 PM PDT reply actions

Good news.
The Angels and Indians may clinch before we play them.

by eponymous coward on Sep 12, 2007 9:38 PM PDT reply actions

Statistically...
Dan Johnson...

vs. LHP=.758 OPS
vs. RHP=.743 OPS

Mike Piazza

vs. LHP=.711 OPS
vs. RHP=.752 OPS

Leaving Huber in gives you the better option vs. Dan Johnson.  Sherrill is a better match for Piazza.  Both managers overmanaged, but ours failed because he's stupider.

by BrettJMiller on Sep 12, 2007 9:40 PM PDT reply actions

I might be wrong...
but I have the feeling we are going to end this game with a whimper, not a bang

by LongBeachDave on Sep 12, 2007 9:41 PM PDT reply actions

To hell with your Rally Fries.
I think the new rally fry girl has been eating the rally fries before arriving at the destination.

by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 12, 2007 9:41 PM PDT reply actions

Vidro needs to get on again
So he can get thrown out at home by 5 feet again.

by Gomez on Sep 12, 2007 9:47 PM PDT reply actions

OK, I cannot see the game
but how do you not score the tying run when you are on first and the batter hits a 2-out double???

Or was it a ground rule double?

by LongBeachDave on Sep 12, 2007 9:50 PM PDT reply actions

Jose Vidro
has his best and worst doubles of the season today.

by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 12, 2007 9:53 PM PDT reply actions

Why can't we be the team
that gets the clutch hit...have we had even ONE the last 18 games?

by LongBeachDave on Sep 12, 2007 9:55 PM PDT reply actions

We know how this goes
Mariners take the lead in the bottom of the 8th, then a rusty JJ falls apart.

by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 12, 2007 9:59 PM PDT reply actions

No.
We never take the lead, then JJ demonstrates a need for a cockpunch.
