8/28: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 7:05pm PDT

Willits LF Ichiro CF Cabrera SS Vidro DH Guerrero RF Guillen RF Anderson Reanimated Corpse Ibanez Reanimated Corpse Izturis 3B Beltre 3B Matthews CF Sexson 1B Morales 1B Johjima C Kendrick 2B Ballgame 2B Mathis C Betancourt SS ---------- ----------

Santana (5-12, 6.03)        Weaver (6-10, 5.51)

I'd like to put yesterday behind us as quickly as possible, so here's an absurdly early game thread, along with some examples of how to use the Mariners' favorite buzzword without sounding trite.

Physical Chemistry: Man, that Willie Ballgame sure is a catalyst for this team.

Biochemistry: I'm really worried that if Jose Guillen turns into a clubhouse cancer down the stretch, we won't be able to treat the problem quickly enough.

Analytical Chemistry: Jarrod Washburn falls apart around 90 pitches, and with a .689 OPS on the year, Richie Sexson can't hit righties to save his life. John McLaren needs to realize this last month.

Solid State Chemistry: It'd be nice if we could maybe substitute in some of the bench players a little more.

Coordination Chemistry: I guess Bavasi and McLaren think that adding Rick White to the bullpen will only make it bigger and stronger.

Organic Chemistry: The coaches couldn't have chosen a better time to reanimate Raul Ibanez's rotting corpse.

Inorganic Chemistry: I guess McLaren thinks that playing Jones or Broussard more often will lower the melting point of the team as a whole.

Theoretical Chemistry: That Richie Sexson sure is hot right now.

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

Back from NYC...
Losing the last three games has really put a downer on what was an excellent holiday, however we still have a chance to gain ground in this series.  With hopefully Good Jeff and Felix on the mound the next two nights, we can close this gap to one gain and with the Yanks against the BoSox, hopefully continue to pull away from them.

Going to try and stay up and watch this one.  Jetlag is a bitch but may work to my advantage in this case...

Yeah

and those two have a very narrow band gap

So what you're telling me....
Is that if Richie hits a flyball that normally hits the middle of the wall, there is a mathematical chance that the ball will actually tunnel through the wall for a home run?

Keep up that warning track power, Richie, it will be rewarded one of these days!

by SankTheTank on Aug 28, 2007 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I think there's a rule about that
If the molecules align to allow a ball to pass through the outfield wall but is below the top of the wall said ball shall be deemed a ground rule doulble.

Okay good to know
The Lopez tag was the only thing that made any sense whatsoever, but to extrapolate that to the entire team having no focus in one of the biggest games of the season...

No offense meant,
but I have had it with programmers for the moment. We're trying to develop new software here at work, and the company in Florida (which will remain unnamed) my bosses chose to saddle me with sucks!

They're either total morons, or they're just slow as can be, just to mess with me. Now my bosses are getting pushy about the software, and acting like it's my fault, when they chose the software company that sucks.

"Two ice creams today bitches..."

by Thingray on Aug 28, 2007 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmm...
Might be because all the programmers spend their day blogging and killing time doing other things.

Er. Wait.

My issue is that even when given a pretty aggressive timeline from management's viewpoint (like, say, with the project I'm currently working on, due in September), I can usually get it done in a week or two's worth of actual production time.

Might just be my lack of formal training, and my unbias in that regard, but a lot of time is wasted in bureaucracy, paperwork, planning to the nth degree.  I'd rather build something that works well enough and is flexible enough to add features/functions as needed/thought of.  Get it done and in production, and do iterative user testing, fixing things that you, as a developer, can't even begin to think of, and make changes as you go along.  If you spend TOO much time planning everything to the nth degree, you lose sight of what it is you're trying to do and end up building something that people can't use and you have to go back and rebuild it anyway.

Of course, the scale of complexity for the apps I build is generally fairly low, and I don't really deal that much with security stuff, so that may be another factor as to why I can get my projects done quickly and have tons of time to hang out here.  Heh.

"Two ice creams today bitches..."

by Thingray on Aug 28, 2007 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess you could say that.
It is the premier Cisco (networking equipment) certification.

It costs about 1200 dollars to take, and you have to fly yourself to LA on your own dime, and stay out there for 8 days. (I live in NJ, BTW)

It involves going into a room full of networking and telecom gear, and you have to set it all up from scratch. Then, they break it all in the most inventive ways they can think of, and you have to fix it under a tight deadline. That's after a 3 day, 6 hour a day test on everything networking related, that you have to pass with at least a high C (I don't think they publish the exact score needed).

You pass, and you get a job working for some telecom or fortune 500 company for 150k/yr to start.

Right now, I'm CCNA (the middle level) and am working myself up to that test. Probably another 2 years, and I'll be ready.

by Faux on Aug 28, 2007 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Not a bad reward for $1,200 (plus airfare)
if you can pass the test. At least it's a somewhat guaranteed outcome if you succeed.

I could get a bunch of accounting certifications (and I have), and it wouldn't guarantee me anything (it hasn't).

"Two ice creams today bitches..."

by Thingray on Aug 28, 2007 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess that was taken literally.
You don't get the job for passing the test, but you do have a long list of suitors looking for someone that can pass that test. They're that rare. Maybe a 8% pass rate, at the most.

And it's usually not just 1200, most people try to take the test a couple times, and end up giving up, declaring it not worth the time or money. Not to brag, but I catch onto most things a lot more quickly than most people, especially networking and computer subject matter. I know 5 of people that have taken the test (and all but 1 failed), and they don't think they missed by much. I also know that I have more knowledge and skill now then they did 3-4 years ago, at about the same stage in their path.

This is going to sound really bad, but I've never had the problem to where I thought I couldn't do something. I may not pass the CCIE, but I'm confident I will.

The Yankee blog I read on a semi-regular basis, www.pinstripealley.com , calculates games ahead/behind solely on the loss column--in otherwords, he has the Yankees 3 behind the Mariners, and the M's 2 behind the Angels due to the loss column---is this a more accurate barometer??? On the post for today, he says that the Yankees "are 3 games behind Seattle."

by LBDave on Aug 28, 2007 3:10 PM PDT reply actions

Not really
By only counting losses, he's effectively counting all unplayed games as possible wins, but ignoring that they're also possible losses.

Now, with contending teams, unplayed games are more likely to be wins than losses, so there's an argument there, but not a good one.

heat transfer lesson of the day
Mr. Garrison:    Okay, now Butters, could you bring over Lemmiwinks for me please?

Butters:    Sure. [smiles and goes to get Lemmiwinks]

Stan:    [sensing what's about to happen] Oh, no, noo, no no no no.

Mr. Garrison:    [gets Lemmiwinks from Butters] Newton was the first to discover that for every action there's a reaction - thank you Butters. Now what do you think is gonna happen when I introduce the element of the gerbil to the endothermic heat of Mr. Slave's ass? [the kids are all aghast] Well let's see. [lifts up the Bunsen tube and sends the gerbil on its way down]

Mr. Slave:    AAH. [the gerbil enters Mr. Slave's lower intestine and comes across the skeleton of another gerbil. It tries to claw its way out] AAH. [moves his head around] Dude! Jesus Christ! AAH!

Butters:    [realizing what just happened] Lemmiwinks? NO!

Fun baseball story time!  The saying actually came to be a long time ago when store owners would store corn on the top shelf and when someone would want a can of corn the store owner would walk over to the shelf with a long stick and knock it off the ledge - catching it in their apron.  Thus - Can of corn!

by seattlesundevil on Aug 28, 2007 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Triple Play 97 (the one with ARod on the cover)
always ran an audio bit about that. It said that in the olden days of yore, grocery clerks would stock canned corn on the top shelf, and then knock it down with a broomstick and catch it in their apron. Hooray useless knowledge gained from videogaming.

really old phrase
originated back when you would go to the local grocery store and hand the cashier a list of thing you would want and he would pick them out and bag them for you. Corn was always on the top shelf and thus anything really high up was "a can of corn"
