We're gonna do something stupid
The post yesterday/two days ago on USSM about what we are probably gonna do made me so mad.

by phil333 on Jun 7, 2007 7:03 AM PDT reply actions

Just to shed a small amount of optimism
on what will probably be a dark day...

In 2005, it wasn't until draft day morning that we learned that the M's might be interested in Clement. Morrow didn't become the clear cut favorite until the night before the draft last season.

So, let's hope...

by Trent on Jun 7, 2007 7:16 AM PDT reply actions

And it looks like Porcello has priced himself out
of the top 5 and likely the top 10. Would the Mariners actually sack up for once?

by Trent on Jun 7, 2007 7:20 AM PDT reply actions

ROFLMFAO!!!!!
RRrrrrriiiiggghhtt...

Just like they grabbed Miller when he surprisingly was available to them last year.

Since there's no "u" in "retire" this'll have to do: Retiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiire.

by PositivePaul on Jun 7, 2007 7:47 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm not going to lose sleep
if they pass Porcello. We're talking about a right handed high school arm who wants a ton of cash. The flame out possibility is huge.

As I've told Pauly for a month, I've kind of had my hear set on Matt Dominguez or Beaven. Either of those guys would be a fantastic pick for the M's. Of course, if Aumont is there, I'd be happy as hell with him too.

by Trent on Jun 7, 2007 8:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Sure.
What's this about MLB having us take Sean Dolittle? RRrrright.
Since there's no "u" in "retire" this'll have to do: Retiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiire.

Draft Highlight Prediction
On the next off day, after the draft, Bavasi and Hargrove are shown the door.  Prior to the draft, the arguement could be made to keep them, for stability.  Once the draft is done, get rid of them before Grover talks Bavasi into trading Ichiro for Moyer or some other "veteran" over 40 pitcher.  Who wants Bavasi calling the shots going into the trade deadline?  That thought alone could sober Lindsay Lohan...
I killed a 12 pack just to watch it die...

I'm optimistic about the draft
I don't why, maybe because I've been up since 5 am and im dead tired, but I have a good feeling.

I don't want to mock the running blog

  1. Price
  2. Moustakas
  3. Vitters
Draft day is so exciting :)

MLWU is up, below this entry
With a little impromptu sermon on the draft in general.  A little late, I know.

Have fun, guys.  I'll probably be AWOL for most of the draft, and I'm sure whoever we get will have enough upside to give up hope.  GO MARINERS.

That said, I agree with katal that Dominguez would not be a bad pick at 11.  But there's quite a few picks I wouldn't be at all disappointed with.

by Gomez on Jun 7, 2007 10:19 AM PDT reply actions

First round pick in review, 2007
Dave doesn't like it, and lays out an extended post addressing both short-term and big-picture reasons for why the pick sucked. DOV loves it, and systematically disagrees with every single one of Dave's points without mentioning him by name. Jason Churchill arrives at the same conclusion as Dave despite a completely different scouting report. Deanna thinks he's cute. Jeff keeps his mouth shut because he doesn't know diddly shit about this year's draft prospects. Logan wants Bavasi maimed by a pack of lions.

I think you've missed one.
Or two.

Jim Street will persistently spell his name wrong.

John Hickey will, too.

There'll be questions in 3 consecutive M's Mailbags that ask why the M's drafted Bloomquist ahead of Pujols.  Two of them, though, will totally agree with the M's decision...

I'll need to go through the archives

I don't think the marginal utility between the top guys is all that great, in any MLB draft, not nearly enough to raise a stink about any particular pick.

Okay, this is all rather amusing
I mean, there are few guarantees that any of these players come through as projected, so you have to rely on the fact that the picks are made with some degree of education (ability-based or financial-based).

But I kind of see little excitement over a relief pitcher, they seem to be easier to collect later on in their careers.

by Babar @ Lookout Landing on Jun 7, 2007 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions

When
people constantly hit refresh, we don't have a site.

Seriously, we're not in the business of trying to say "we got 3 million hits! woo!", we're in the business of providing good information to Mariner fans, and when people just sit there and hit refresh over and over til we go offline, we can't do that.

It's pretty annoying.

by Robert on Jun 7, 2007 11:57 AM PDT reply actions

Okay, it's official
Televising the MLB draft is a bad idea, if for no other reason than ESPN does everything they can to ruin it.  Insistent 5 minute TV gaps between picks, interviews with kids that have no speaking skills, an hour later and we're still waiting for the first 15 picks.  Shit, the NBA and NFL don't even do that!  ESPN works off their clock, not the other way around.  The mandatory 5 minute wait is more insulting than anything.  That's gotta go, right now.

And nobody in the general public knows who any of these kids are.

Just read some names in a boardroom and let's go home.  Don't glitzify every damn thing.

re: Good call Cleveland
Because you really need more offense, and not pitching.

In baseball, you almost always draft best player without worrying about what you need.  The main concern is not blowing the pick.

It's almost impossible to predict what the talent profile of an organization will be at the MLB and upper minor league a couple of years down the road. If you make a good pick that contributes to surplus, you can always trade for what you do need.

When teams start factoring in need, they make decisions such as drafting Jeff Clement instead of Cameron Maybin.  Even if Maybin were stacked up behind the rest of the Mariners OFs, if he were in the Mariners organization the Mariners would be in a good position to deal for some pitching help.

Being as Aumont is from Ottawa
Is it possible his lack of usage on his arm projects some growth in his velocity over the next few years.  Since he's form a cold weather area he isn't throwing year round and his arm may still have some untapped potential

I'm not speaking exponential, but maybe from 92-94 to 94-96 over a few years of MLB workouts etc?

I'll be he works out indoors.
Being a high school pick, though, I imagine there's definitely still room for growth.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 7, 2007 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I do know
a lot of college coaches look at arms form the north as "fresher" because they do not play year round.  As a pitcher myself, I've heard a lot of talk about this as I tried to make my college choice.  There's a big difference between an indoor bullpen session and a game in the taxation it takes on the arm, and not playing 5 months of the year is tough.

Generally, pitchers from cold weather areas are seen to have slightly more potential to grow, as opposed to kids from warm weather areas.

by mariners124m on Jun 7, 2007 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions

It is a good point.

I will be asleep through the draft and you cannot trade draft picks. Those are his two nuggets of info for the draft, the fact that you can't trade draft picks is stupid for any baseball blog short of the PI one. Angels fans really don't deserve to have a good team

Hasn't looked as good this year.

Do they use wood bats in the cape cod league? If so, I am very very happy.

Yes
They do use wood bats in the cape :)

by RavingGoat on Jun 7, 2007 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes
And MiLB's only stated weakness concerning Mangini is a tendency towards bad alminum-bat habits... which Mangini appeared to progress towards shedding in the Cape Cod League with a wooden bat.

Sounds good.  Another guy to look forward to seeing in Everett.

Drafts like these
are the reason why I'm a Bavasi backer.

by Robert on Jun 7, 2007 2:58 PM PDT reply actions

all Fontaine
but yeah, Bavasi's a good guy, but he's not fit to be the lone GM. He judges major league talent too poorly.

by Matthew on Jun 7, 2007 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Judges talent too poorly...
...and has too many front office types who also judge talent poorly. Bavasi's not as much of a problem if there's less garbage going in...

by rtang on Jun 7, 2007 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions

If I had to make a guess
I'd say Bavasi's problem is a tendency to cave in to outside pressures to do things like make rash moves that hurt the organization, spending a ton of money on big contracts even though there's nobody worth spending it on, going out and bringing in guys just for the sake of paying to bring someone in to show you're trying to build a team.

I'm not sure he's that dumb in a vacuum... though, obviously, no one ever works in a vacuum.  Every GM has to deal with pressures from team presidents, ownership, etc.  I don't think, when top execs push him, that Bavasi knows how to push back and juggle sating their wishes with doing the right thing.

Some more info from perfectgame.org re: Carroll
"The White team was led on the field and in the dugout by energetic CF Daniel Carroll. Carroll was 1-4 with a run scored and a stolen base, but it was his infectious energy that carried his team. If there is a player that is clearly more into playing baseball and being a good teammate than he is, I have not seen that player. "

My only guess
is that this is why:

Caution
That website is VERY misleading.  It makes it seem like they're critiquing the player's career, but really they only go to one game and critique that.  Read a lot of the profiles closely and you'll pick up on this; it took me a while to figure it out.
