Cleveland vs. Seattle

Why isn't this a bigger rivalry? We opened Jacobs Field in '94 (Eric Anthony of all players hit the first home run there), played them in the '95 ALCS, had the Randy Johnson/Kenny Lofton "It was a slider!" incident, Lou had one of his biggest blowups there kicking his hat all the way off the field, the 2001 game that still haunts us to this day, the much-more-nailbiting-than-it-should-have-been '01 ALDS, the Arthur Rhodes/Omar Vizquel earrings incident, this year's snow job and random makeup series and the potential Wild Card race, if they don't catch Detroit.

Again, why isn't this a big deal?

Isn't it obvious?
That city of whale vaginas is our NATURAL rival. Our hatred for those little friar tucks outweighs any other rivalry possibilities.

I have hated the Indians for sometime, but they were actually my pick to win that division this year and most of the guys are fairly likeable. There are no former M's or Albert Belle or anything. Although we do have their old MGR.

Belle's colorful past
Remember when Albert (Joey) Belle beaned that fan in the chest with a baseball? Ah... good times.

Huh?
Whale vaginas?

From the movie Anchorman.
This place has a sign hangin' over the urinal that says, "Don't eat the big white mint".

It's from Anchorman

I attended UCSD, and while I was there I saw a few people wearing "UC Whale's Vagina" t-shirts.

meh
How can you hate Cleveland. You just have to pity anyone who actually lives there. You didn't even mention the biggest thing I ought to hate them for... stealing Omar from us in the first place! But even so... meh.

I would say that it isn't a big deal
because there are other teams that Mariner fans dislike more. Sure, we may not like the Indians, but we just can't draw that much ire towards them while we're already directing our hatred at the Angels, red sox, and Yankees.

by Katal LM on Jun 29, 2007 11:57 AM PDT   0 recs

I hate the A's more, personally
although the Angels this year are really getting up in annoyance factor, in particular that way they scored a run off of Felix that one game at home off of like a walk and three POS infield singles.

The Yanks and Sox though, everybody kinda hates, so I'm not really sure I'd call that a rivalry. I mean, I think both sides really have to take it as a rivalry for it to really count.

Someone in the M's marketing department should be on this (and they should be conspiring with the Indians' marketing department). Maybe they should get some people outside the next M's/Indians game to protest the Cleveland mascot and try to get on the news there. That might piss 'em off a little bit.

The Angels offense is built around POS singles
Though Scoscia and the fans would prefer that you call them either "grit singles" or "hustle singles."

I'd be down for a protest
Your post has gotten me thinking. Here are all 30 teams, ranked in tiers, based on how I feel about them.

Teams that I love:
Seattle Mariners

Teams that I actively like:
Chicago Cubs
Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Teams that I would root for in the playoffs, provided they're not playing one of the above said teams:
Florida Marlins
Philadelphia Phillies
Kansas City Royals
Milwaukee Brewers
Pittsburgh Pirates
Minnesota Twins
Colorado Rockies
Houston Astros
Arizona Diamondbacks

Teams I can't bring myself to care about:
Atlanta Braves
St. Louis Cardinals
LA Dodgers
SF Giants
New York Mets

Teams I think are pathetic, and therefore dislike:
Texas Rangers
Washington Nationals
Baltimore Orioles

Teams who, due to one event in history or another, I dislike:
Cleveland Indians
Chicago White Sox
Detroit Tigers
Cincinnati Reds
Toronto Blue Jays

Rivals:
Oakland A's
San Diego Padres

Hated Rivals:
The Los Angeles Angels

Teams who, if their plane crashed, I would feel guilty, because I probably wouldn't feel as bad as I ought to:
Boston Red Sox
New York Yankees

I'm with you on either end of that, more or less
I've got relatives in Illinois so I'm a Cubbies sympathizer, though I enjoyed White Sox fans when I was there, too.

I usually pick a surrogate playoff team. Last year it was the Tigers. I'm not exactly sure why I went with the Tigers, but I did.

I used to hate the Brewers (my grandmother always wanted them to lose because they were the Pilots and it serves 'em right) but not anymore. I like the Twins, I can't like the Jays (early '90s Canadian overrun in the Kingdome), and, well, yeah. I better get back to work.

Agree
except I'd move the cubs to the pathetic category, the astros to the not care about, and the braves up to the could root for.

I was a youngin' in the 90's
And I will always hate Cleveland.
