5/24: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 12:10pm PDT

Ichiro CF Upton CF Vidro DH Harris SS Guillen RF Crawford LF Broussard LF Wigginton 2B Sexson 1B Young RF Johjima C Cantu 1B Betancourt SS Gomes DH Lopez 2B Navarro C Bloomquist 3B Wilson 3B ---------- ----------

Ho (4-2, 6.10)              Seo (2-4, 7.80)

According to THT, the Mariners have the second-worst team defense in the AL and the fourth-worst defense in the Majors, at -19 plays (-13 on grounders, -6 on fly balls). I wouldn't have believed it either, but there you go. What this means is that, with Ho, Seo, and both groups of gloves, today's game is featuring an exceptional amount of ugly. Here's to the Mariners coming out on top of such a distinguished competition.

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

Bad defense?
I wouldn't have thought that. I would have guessed more middle of the pack.

But when you think about it, Betancourt has had issues this year. Plus Ibanez (and on occasion Broussard) in the outfield can drag things down quite a bit. They alone probably account for the -6 flyball number.

Hello, 911? It's Quagmire. Yeah, it's caught in the window this time

by Ben in Va on May 24, 2007 9:14 AM PDT reply actions

I would have thought
Guillen's lack of range in right field would add more to the -6 then Ibanez's gaffs out there.  I haven't looked at any numbers but I would have to guess just from watching that Guillen doesn't get to nearly as many balls as an average defender.

by MfaninAlaska on May 24, 2007 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Guillen has seemed adequate
Honestly though that is a gut feeling.

Broussard in the few games he played has been awful. He alone could account for -3.

Hello, 911? It's Quagmire. Yeah, it's caught in the window this time

by Ben in Va on May 24, 2007 9:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, probably.
And I'm sure Sexson contributes a little to the infield rating as well.

by Jeff Sullivan on May 24, 2007 9:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh
and Guillen too, like MFIA says above. He's not a problem, but his route-running hasn't impressed me.

by Jeff Sullivan on May 24, 2007 9:21 AM PDT up reply actions

I was looking at THT
I find it interesting at how unbalanced some teams are. TB for example is -39 on grounders but +1 on flyballs. In a way it makes sense when your outfield has speedy, young, decent fielders and your infield has Ty Wiggington.

Then you have Boston at -21 in the air and +27 on the ground. Yikes on flyballs.

Could our ground numbers also be due to the fact that we have a higher GB/FB ratio than last year, raising the number of chances?

Hello, 911? It's Quagmire. Yeah, it's caught in the window this time

Boston's air numbers will be skewed

by Ben in Va on May 24, 2007 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions

I'll give you that sexson is pretty bad
at fielding GBs but it seems like he doesn't get credit for being almost 7' tall.  I'm pretty sure this has to decrease the number of balls that get past him since his reach is about a billion feet so that Beltre and Betancourt only need to get it in the general direction.  Maybe not?

by Edgar for Pres on May 24, 2007 11:50 AM PDT up reply actions

The height helps.
But the lousy foot/glovework are bigger minuses than the plus of being tall.

by Jeff Sullivan on May 24, 2007 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh...Happy Ho day.
This game has the potential to be a 15-14 slugfest.

Which is probably why the end result will be a 1-0 shutout or something, just because the baseball gods like to screw with us.

So, what's the excuse going to be
for Garcia's gaffes?  Last time I think it was "A Third base coach isn't doing his job if he doesn't get some runners thrown out at the plate."

But based on his past history of getting guys thrown out, and his crappy performance today, I think it's a crime not to fire him.

by BrettJMiller on May 24, 2007 1:34 PM PDT reply actions

It's too bad that I don't own this team

I agree with this:
"A Third base coach isn't doing his job if he doesn't get some runners thrown out at the plate."

But there are times to be aggressive, and that wasn't it. You can't hold every runner at third if the play is going to be close, but it should at least be CLOSE!

  1.  Send H-Ram to 60-day DL. (injured or not)
  2.  Call up Justin Lehr.
  3.  Trade Adam Jones for quality* starting pitcher.
  4.  Send down Sean White.  (Atlanta may not want him back*)
  5.  Call up quality starting pitcher.
-indicates actual quality, not Bavasi perception

Not so much, but better than watching Beltre flail away.

by Jeff Nusser on May 24, 2007 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions

but Guillen had some ugly at bats today.
Oh well... I put the most blame on White.  As far as players anyways.

by lessthnpar on May 24, 2007 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Kind Of
The thing is when Guillen's 0-5 and the rest of the team has 12 runs on 18 hits, you have to figure he's going to over-try even more than he did on his LAST at-bat.  So at that point, it might be worth letting someone else hit.

But it's a hard call.  Beltre PH'ing is not a move that usually looks like "this will avoid the flailing swinging K".

Bavasi shouldn't be fired. He should be knackered.

by EireDuck on May 24, 2007 3:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Shrug, still two out of three

I thought we'd beat Kazmir and lose to Fossum and Seo.

So, yeah, winning 2-3 instead of 1-3 is better than my expectations, but it still sucks that we couldn't sweep 'em and make up ground on LALALA...

So, Chris Tillman
Dave, half tongue in cheek, is certain Tillman is going to get rocked in High Desert.  I'm semi-crossposting these comments:

Aaron Cotter, Marwin Vega, Nicholas Allen, Jose Escalona, Austin Bibens-Dirkx and Roman Martinez, however, are running ERA's in the 3's and 4's. And most of those guys aren't exactly bright prospects (ABD notwithstanding).  Most of the team's 5.27 ERA is thanks to a struggling Paul Fagan and a now-retired Jon Lockwood.  You can only blame sample size to a point: when more than half your pitching staff is running somewhat normalized ERAs despite playing half their games in a launchpad, you have to doubt it will wreck Chris Tillman's stats and performance.

I think Tillman's numbers will actually look passable despite it all.  The space park isn't destroying the pitching staff as much as the park factor would suggest.  Plus, Chris Tillman is clearly a great talent, and despite some off moments was dominating Single A hitters with his stuff.

Sure, Tillman's still developing, and he may get taken deep on a couple flyballs that would stay in most yards, but an ERA in the 4's is not improbable.

by Gomez on May 24, 2007 3:40 PM PDT reply actions

Anyone Have Stats...
...on the average location of the tying run when the M's lose while batting?  (Don't know if we've given up  a lot of walk-off losses this year... the only one I remember is the Manny Ramirez HR at Fenway...)

If you put it in feet away, with 90 extra feet for each batter (at bat is 360 feet away, on deck 450, and so on), I would bet the average is something like 250.

That's what makes this team such a heartbreaker.  They're one break away (times 15) from being the best team in baseball.

Bavasi shouldn't be fired. He should be knackered.
