Felix Day, May 15th! Come to Safeco!

Here's the deal:

  1. Tuesday night you can get View Reserved upper deck seats for $10 instead of the normal $18
  2. EnglishMariner is in town and he claims that none of us Seattleites can understand his accent
  3. FELIX IS PITCHING AGAIN
In reality, #3 should be all you need as an excuse to come down to the park, but the other two are good reasons too.

Anyway, I propose that we somehow all get together for this game.  I think what would probably make the most sense would be to just pick an area of View Reserved that we'll be sitting in -- somewhere that's unlikely to be all that crowded -- and have people buy $10 tickets and just come find us somewhere specific in the stands.  That way even if people have tickets already, you could still come hang out for an inning or so too.

EDIT: GET TICKETS IN SECTION 320, ROW 15 OR SO. WE'LL FIND A WAY TO SIT TOGETHER ONE WAY OR THE OTHER, EVEN IF IT REQUIRES MOVING OVER A SECTION OR BACK A FEW ROWS.

Don't care where we sit...
As long as King Felix is fanning Angels with his 97 mph 2-seamer, I am happy.  Also, bring the camera because I need some holiday photos and I only have a camera phone on me. :(

Skipping class to go
even with an assignment due that day!

I remember the A's game we saw late last year and liked those seats along the 1B side.

Huh
I can't remember offhand where that was, but I kept all of my ticket stubs from last year, so I can go check.  I mostly ended up sitting on the 3B side in the upper deck last year.

EnglishMariner, yeah, I'll bring my camera, though I probably won't bring my zoom lenses or anything.

320, row 13
that's where we were.

so that's good, I was going to suggest something like 320, row 15ish, plus or minus one section if it turns out to be crowded.

We could also make a sign or two to hold up to signify the group... like "TURBO LIFTERS" or "POWERED BY FUNK" or "BACK SPASMS"

okay, maybe not the last one, but you get the idea.

Don't forget that Angels are playing that night
I'm there along you guys don't mind my cultish behavior with Felix, it seems like it would be incredibly amusing thing to do. This got me wondering though, do Angel fans travel around the world to see Jered Weaver?

And don't worry about your accent English Mariner, I lived 10 years in New York and 10 years in Seattle so my accent is FUBARed. Honestly only my GF can understand me nowadays but Felix! is the same in every language.

My family gets half-season Club Seats
So I get all the tuesdays and day games. A lot of those I can't make so I trade them in for Fri-Sunday games.
I traded in Tuesday's game before the season started. I will be going to Sunday's game with my mom however.

IMO, I think 3rd base side is better then 1st base side for Felix pitching. Right handed pitching you can see the pitcher's face and body more versus just the back.
Have fun to all those who will be there tuesday!

And the only time I ever interact with them is when they ask me if they can help find my seat, upon my arrival.

I dunno. I think you'd be okay getting a ticket to 321, but there's nothing wrong with playing it safe either.

by Katal LM on May 13, 2007 10:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I've bought center field bleacher tickets
all but two games this year and sat in all different places in the 100 level all year.  Never once ventured into the bleachers.

by BrettJMiller on May 13, 2007 11:03 PM PDT up reply actions

they're usually pretty nice as long as you're in
the right price range of the field.  I've been known to park myself in section 149 -- right by the left-field line -- to take pictures of pitchers warming up.  Ushers come up to me like "hey, let me see your ticket," I show them my ticket for section 143, they say "okay... well, if anyone shows up for this seat, you'll have to give it up, but otherwise, you're ok since you have a Field Box seat"

and I'm pretty sure it works the same way in the upper deck.  I mean, I move around seats up there all the time and never get stopped.  I figure there's no way we'd all manage to get seats together if we're all buying separately anyway... as long as we don't cause too much trouble, we should be okay congregating wherever.

Hmmmm.
Yeah, but a certain 50mm lens on your D50 would probably work very well for group shots.  Don't you have the stock 18-55, too?

I'll probably sling the whole shebang over my shoulder, as is usual (4 lenses + camera + backup film camera in a side pocket). With the weather being pretty nice and all, I'm thinking about doing another version of this shot (since that one only blows up so big, and I can only imagine having one in the size of my Safeco Panorama shot).

Besides.  I can't go to a baseball game without my big camera.  I just can't do it.  Heh.

Hello, Richie? Stop sucking. kthxbye!

by PositivePaul on May 14, 2007 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions

The 50mm wouldn't be great for group shots
I'd have to be like 30 feet away or more to take it.  I do have the stock 18-55.  In theory I'm actually still pretty torn about the 50mm.  I'm not actually any good at using it.

So, the problem is, I simply can't take the shots I want to from the upper deck.  I'm all about candid, expressive shots, and I can't zoom in enough to get players' faces from up there.

Marinerds - a different daily dose of baseblog.

by Deanna on May 14, 2007 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions

True.
I've got my 17mm, which has become my favorite lens for non-baseball and non-macro stuff.  That'd be wide enough to get a group shot.  I could do really weird funky effects with Goose's nose or something, too.  Heh.

Speaking of Goose -- you're coming from Aberdeen, right?  I'm in Oly, and will be driving solo after work (although I'll probably leave by 4:15-ish). Maybe we could meet up in Oly and ride up together ( don't mind driving).  Just an idea.  My e-mail's on my profile.

Well, I might scoot down to the 100 level for an inning or two, since they let you stand there at least for a bit.  I've gotten some pretty good shots there, even without having to shell out the $55 for those seats (although, yeah, I'm spoiled by sitting in those seats, so sitting up in the 'bleeds will be sorta tough, even w/my telephotos...)

Hello, Richie? Stop sucking. kthxbye!

by PositivePaul on May 14, 2007 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Not worth it at night, for me
You have a faster zoom than mine, I assume?  Even from my seat in row 28 on the lower level, I can't get decent shots after about 8pm at the latest, with the current light.
Marinerds - a different daily dose of baseblog.

by Deanna on May 14, 2007 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Of course...
Opening Day was pretty much an afternoon event, so it wasn't too dark, but yeah, I shot almost exclusively with my manual-focus 80-200 F/2.8 zoom (and I haven't really spent much time on those pictures -- there's a lot better quality that I can get out of those pictures, since I shot in Raw mode).  Same thing for the only Cheney game I've been to thus far.  It was finished by 8:30, but yeah, having f/2.8 works pretty well for getting 1/500th @ISO 1000(ish) that time of day.

That's one of my biggest beefs with the D50/D70 series -- not being able to meter with the manual focus lenses.  Yeah, you can take some sample shots, look at the histogram, and get a general ballpark (and fix the exposure later, if you're shooting in RAW). But I like not having to worry about those sorts of things.  That's the only thing that's holding me back, really, from buying a D70 as a second body.  I'm holding out for the D200 or D2H (and the ability to program MF lenses into the camera database, to re-enable Matrix Metering)...

Hello, Richie? Stop sucking. kthxbye!

I just bought my ticket
I'm in 320, Row 15, seat 19, but there were literally two seats left in the row -- I don't know if that's due to all of us buying tickets there or just normal market forces.  Not much left in front of it.  There's a TON of empty seats behind it though, so if worse comes to worst, we'll all just congregate in rows 16-17 instead, or something like that?  I think we can figure something out one way or the other.

I'm still debating whether to make a sign of some sort or not...

What time does BP start?

by Goose on May 14, 2007 8:42 PM PDT reply actions

Right when the gates open, 2 hours before game
time.  So if you get there right at 5 you might be lucky enough to catch the end of the M's BP, then see the Angels hit.  Felix will probably come out around 6:40 to start warming up...he does long-toss with Raffy Chaves or Wirtala, moves to the pen and stretches with a big heavy green ball, then throws.    I'm not going to watch him warm up though--the only two times I've done that this year Batista's given up 7 and Felix has gotten hurt.

by BrettJMiller on May 15, 2007 2:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Techincally
BP starts before the gates open, but I would get there early anyway and try to watch Ichiro take it. He is usually among the first to go but he is simply awe inspiring with his power swing and worth getting  there early.
The poster formerly known as KnightofKingK

by Robert on May 15, 2007 7:08 AM PDT up reply actions

Good luck with that
Ichiro will probably be done with BP way before the gates open.  It's usually M's until about 5:30pm, then opposing team until about 6:20pm.  Starting pitchers throw on the field from around 6:40 and in the bullpen from around 6:50.

Actually, I wonder if there's a correlation between how good the pictures I get of the opposing starter are.  There've been some times when I've gotten a fantastic shot of some pitcher or another and then he comes in and owns the Mariners.

So, I think I will go watch John Lackey tomorrow, because there's no such thing as a "good shot" of him :)

I decided to avoid doing my normal pregame routine today though, I didn't even bring my big camera.  I'm just going to get to the park and go to section 320 and get food and go look for people, for a change.

I'll be wearing
A crimson (actually red) WSU T-shirt and an M's hat. I should stick out like a sore thumb.

and I've got friends in tow to boot
I haven't gotten tix yets, so I will either end up taking up the row behind everyone else, or I will be at the peripheries.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the game!

Just be sure to get 'em somewhere in 320.  That's where we'll all be -- 'round row 15 I s'pose.  Sweetage!  Glad to hear you're coming too!!!

Was thinking of heading to Red Mill Burger
Around 4:30.  If anyone wants to experience a true Seattle Cheeseburger, it's located Here.

Well
Some of us are walking to the stadium from work.  But Red Mill is pretty freaking good.  I wish they were in the stadium instead of Kidd Valley or whatver.

I actually haven't been to that Red Mill in ages (I used to live about a mile up Greenwood from it), now I mostly go to the one over on Dravus St since that's closer to me.

Lessee...
I may be to Ft. Lewis by 4:30, but even that may be doubtful.  I'm probably outta here in 10 minutes or fewer...

Tickets
When I was in the press box on Monday I nicked a sheet with info for the media on it.  It included a section on ticket avaliabilty - as of Monday there was still some 21,500 tickets on sale. :p

Only 10,000 left for Friday though against SD.
