Happy Felix Day.

Why do you hate America?

Well, let's think about this.
Where has more harm been done to the Mariners - America, or the Middle East?

I saw Harden went on the DL
Unfortunate that two of the best pitchers in the division are out.

who's the best pitcher left in the division?

I say Haren
He of the 1.20 ERA. Harden will be back to make his start on Tuesday.

by kva15 on Apr 23, 2007 5:53 PM PDT up reply actions

some might disagree
But I really wish we would of signed Millwood before the 06 season.  He's probably overpaid, but not Zito or Meche overpaid. I think Felix - Millwood would be a pretty sick 1-2 punch.

Plus, wasn't the reason we didn't sign him was because the M's didn't want to do a 5-year deal?? The M's were looking more for a 3 or 4 year deal.  What was the problem with going 5 years??  If your willing to give Jose Vidro 3 years, I don't see the what's so bad about giving Kevin Willwood 5 years.

by MFAN on Apr 23, 2007 3:43 PM PDT reply actions

Second
Millwood would have been great in Safeco. Bavasi must die.

by Rollo Tomasi on Apr 23, 2007 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Let's put it this way.
Washburn: 4 @ 38
Batista 3 @ 24

Vs:

Millwood: 5 @ 60

Millwood will a good shot to be a big giant pile of suck by year 5 of his deal, but Millwood+Baek or Generic Replacement 5th Guy > Washburn+Batista, and the Mariners will be spending almost 20 million a year through 2009 on two guys you'd expect to have a 4.50-5.00 ERA in a neutral park/neutral defense scenario.

by eponymous coward on Apr 23, 2007 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Washburn
is one log of shit away from a pile of suck when we signed him.

by Edgar for Pres on Apr 23, 2007 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Millwood or Washburn...that's a toughy.
-2006 stats-

Jarrod Washburn
IP 187
RA 4.96
ERA+ 93
FIP 4.83
xFIP 5.35
K/9 4.96
BB/9 2.65
K/BB 1.87
HR/9 1.20
2007 Salary $9,850,000

Kevin Millwood
IP 215
RA 4.77
ERA+ 104
FIP 3.93
xFIP 4.23
K/9 6.57
BB/9 2.22
K/BB 2.96
HR/9 0.96
2007 Salary $11,250,000

I think we'd all spend the extra change to get the better pitcher.

by Edgar for Pres on Apr 23, 2007 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions

FIP and xFIP
Are substantially overrating Millwood according to play-by-play data. In my book he's a better pitcher than Washburn, but by so much you want to pay out of your nose to get him.

League average is 5.00, these are 2006 stats...

Millwood pRA: 4.61
Wasbburn pRA: 4.99

Only after shifting the numbers around to account for luck does any real difference appear, and I'm not really comfortable in dismissing a bunch of data by throwing it back towards league average.

Millwood pRA*: 4.49
Washburn pRA*: 5.27

by Graham MacAree on Apr 23, 2007 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions

If you want to sign a pitcher
who is better than average you should expect to pay a tad more.  Its kind like paying 20k for an Accord or 17k for a Taurus.  Sure the Taurus isn't that bad of a car but for just a little more you could buy a much better car.

by Edgar for Pres on Apr 23, 2007 4:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Alls I know
is that if you spend $8.5 million on Jeff Weaver, and after 2 weeks are one bad start are about to DFA him, I think 8 million over two years isn't that bad.
But seriously, for the price of Weaver, Guillen, and Vidro, we could have Millwood and Snelling and Broussard.

Watch out conspiricy theory
Ok this starts out simple.

Felix pitches...
Felix dominates...
Felix watches 4 other pitchers...
Felix sad.  Felix sees Weaver sucks most.  Felix hates losing.
Felix ponders...

Many moons pass, then there is a mysterious forearm injury.  Baek comes up and pitches mediocre but all it takes to replace Weaver a batting practice pitcher who doesn't throw tennis balls.

I like the idea
that there are more than one JJ. Sort of like Jose Guillen having "the animals" waking up inside him.

Classic M's pitching strategy
Locate the fastball. You don't need those breaking pitches.

What is that now...
7 fastballs in a row?

from a one pitch AB
to a 10 pitch AB, why do they always have to make it so interesting

That at bat
was composed entirely of high 93mph fastballs. Like, every pitch.

If Putz was allowed to throw more than one pitch
it'd be too easy for him

Just curious
if a lot of people believe in the whole small sample size thing, then why have they been acting like the Mariners would never win again?

Don't go all Coach Owens-rebuttal on me.

because
i felt like that coming outta the gate, don't you with the caliber of our starting pitching, doesnt matter how big the sample size gets jeff weaver still sucks

I find it amusing
To be overly pessimistic. It's a cultural thing.

MARINERS WIN!!! THHHHHHHHHHHE
MARINERS WIN!

I wouldn't bust out the celebratory PBR if I were Hargrove, though.  He still needs to win a couple series to gain anything resembling job security.

by Gomez on Apr 23, 2007 9:41 PM PDT reply actions

Maybe you agree with the USSM, Jeff...
But is it really so horrible and destructive to give Morrow a shot at starting a few games in place of Batista, HoRam, Weaver, Baek, Pray for Snow, etc.?

Good thing we won but...
get Beltre out of the 2 spot!
He's terrible now.
