I just caught up on DVR
Yaay Sexson and Felix.
I'm excited for this season.
Although the fact that Vidro's gotten on base twice, while, say, Yuni or Lopez has not, makes me think that one of them will be this year's failed regular. =(

best baseball day ever
Felix leading candidate for AL cy young.

and Sexson on pace for 162 homers.

One of those may actually happen, can you guess which one??

by MFAN on Apr 2, 2007 6:16 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, that was a pretty sweet game
I'm back at my work office for another hour before trying to get out of downtown.

I have to admit that when Putz came out I was a little worried, but whew, it worked out okay.

Marshall is a lefty sidearmer... there was some AN talk about him and Brad Ziegler, but I had somehow missed the memo that he was on the opening day roster.  So cool.  I love wacky deliveries.

The people with the K signs for Felix were like, right above home plate.  It took me over half the game to spot them.  I guess once there were, you know, like 10, it was hard to miss them.

You wouldn't have known this watching at home (I don't think, I haven't read the other thread), but the stadium scoreboards were all broken from like the middle of the second inning to the middle of the fifth.  Pretty crazy.

That Haren-Crosby muff was probably the total pivotal moment of the game.  I can't wait to see the actual WExp%.

There was this little kid behind me who was yelling things for the whole game.  The best was probably when he wouldn't stop saying "BUUUUUUUCK, YOU SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK".  Of course, this same little kid was asking his dad whether Jimmy Rollins could become another 40/40 player.  I think he may have been a little confused.

It's comforting to have the opportunity

by anotherjeff on Apr 2, 2007 7:06 PM PDT reply actions

Mixing his pitches.
He threw a first pitch fastball down Kendall to start the game. After that, his pitch selection was almost perfect.
No sir, I don't like it. ~Mr.Horse

by Goose on Apr 2, 2007 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions

yup beautiful pitch selection
I was worried it was gonna be all fastball and he was going to get rocked but I couldn't have called a better game if I knew the results ahead of time. changeups, curves all over the place and not just when you expected.

by phil333 on Apr 2, 2007 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions

i thought he used too many first pitch fast balls
later in the game.  they started looking for them as evidenced by the double off the wall.  I also thought he didn't use the changeup enough but all the concerns really don't matter much because the results speak for themselves.

felix shouldn't have to worry that giving up 1 run loses him the game.  the offense needs to help him out more.

I have returned
HAHAHAHA THAT WAS FUCKING AWESOME.

The one thing I like just as much as seeing a GREAT game like that is to come back and read the thread for it.

Some things:

  •  I also noticed the STUPID COMPLACENT BITCHES who would not stand up and applaud how fucking awesome Felix Fucking Hernandez was today, but by far the most vocal, supportive and active fans were with me in the CF bleachers.  A few rows up, there was this group of frat boys who clearly understood the significance of El Cartelua.  One even had on a HERNANDEZ 59 t-shirt.  They stood up, clapped and yelled EVERY TIME Felix got to two strikes, and sometimes even after one strike, and every Felix K got high fives and serious noise.  They regularly implored surrounding sections to GET UP AND SHOW RESPECT, but to no avail.
  • Just a few seats to my right, another group of guys were also vocal and rowdy, and during that awesome 4 run rally, they repeated this chant:
RALLY RALLY
THE PITCHER'S NAME IS SALLY
WOOT WOOT WOOTWOOTWOOT

I... don't know, but it got louder with every baserunner, and it obviously helped ;P

  • As for those of you wondering about Guillen's arm... Guillen was one-hopping warm-up throws to Ichiro.  Not encouraging.
  • Richie must be hallucinating that he's seeing strikes because I had no idea what he was swinging at half the time.  Still, awesome HR that iced the ballgame.
  • Piazza is fucking DONE.  His bat "speed" makes Carl Everett look like Pujols.
  • I also had a hilarious moment after they drove in the first run.  Everyone was screaming and all, and I turned around to high five the guys behind me.  They just stared at me.  After a moment, I just turned back around and that was that.
  • Meanwhile, I respect the fact that they're at least trying to take a couple pitches before hacking away, but Lopez and Yuni stared at a couple of easy fastballs down the pike.
  • It wasn't raining when they closed the roof.  They just saw the clouds roll in and got paranoid.
-It was a bit warm an hour before gametime, then it immediately got COLD.  Even though the temp was in the mid to high 40's, it felt cold like ice in Safeco.  I can imagine that, after a month in sunny Arizona, that playing Opening Day in this icebox had to be a shell shock.  It makes Felix's amazing performance even more amazing.
  • I totally called that last Vidro GIDP.  God, what a fat useless toad.
  • Man... Felix.  Felix even got screwed by the ump on obvious strikes about 5 or 6 times, at least, and it STILL didn't matter.
  • Trained by years of malaise, I kept expecting Felix to blow it, kept expecting the big innings that years of Meche, Pineiro et al have trained me to expect... and it never came.  I definitely noticed that no balls were leaving the infield or even getting in the air.  I lost count of all the K's after about 5 or 6.  They just kept coming and, with no view of the big scoreboard or the K toter from the bleachers, all I knew was that Felix was kicking ass.
Just... incredible.  Felix was focused this offseason on dominating out of the gate.  Clearly, he's there, and the AL better be afraid.

- I also hung out for a spell at Pioneer Square Saloon with Derek from USSM and a few others, and got him to sign my copy of the Cheater's Guide to Baseball.  I got him to do a hilarious sig: I'll post a pic when I can get one up.
