What's the irony, too, in Ichiro having a 14-pitch at-bat?  Man.  I have to check my calendar to verify it's not Friday the 13th.

I was reading an article in the Tacoma News Tribune today that talked about the shortage of black players in the Majors. At one point it was pointed out that two of MLB's most prominent teams only had one African-American each. These two teams were the Yankees (Jeter) and Red Sox (Coco Crisp).

by Coach Owens on Apr 15, 2007 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Interesting
The Yankees had Sheffield last year and Shawn Chacon a couple years back.  And now it's just Jeter, who's about as black as Bryant Gumbel.

But yeah, black Americans are disappearing from baseball.  It's because basketball is more accessible and attracitve to inner city kids, and sadly, much of black America resides in the run-down inner cities.  If you want to play baseball you need gloves, bats, a big ass field with a diamond, some sort of pitching mound or rubber (most fields are softball sized with no mound)... for basketball all you need is a hoop based near a slab of concrete and a ball.  Kinda like how soccer is hugely popular around the world because all you really need is a ball.

As for all the Latino nations producing ballplayers despite this, hey, the academies have worked wonders, but there's also a demand for baseball there.

  • Al's in Wallingford is WAY, WAY better than the lounge I've been hanging out at for the last few months.  I can't believe I stopped going there after I moved.
Things I learned today:
  • Brad Thomas should've stayed in Japan.
  • Michael Wilson and Luis Valbuena are a few more 0-4, 3 K games from saying Fuck It and going into cashiering at Burger King.
  • If the M's play this well when I'm not watching them, then I need to stay away for the early innings more often.
  • I was right about Brandon McCarthy.
  • If I didn't actually watch Jose Vidro hit two home runs, then I cannot possibly believe it happened.

he got half the team to wear high socks!
well, or something.  They must have seen how awesome he is and decided to follow suit.

Ballgame! Mariners win!
We haven't lost a series yet.

Jeff foretold this
That's why so many people were hesitant to get excited after the team won its first four series. That's why Safeco remained below full capacity when the team finished May in first place.

Well
technically they split with Boston. But the Felix game should count for two.

Mariners: 5-3
Latest in a season they've been two games over .500 since that horrible horrible Rockies game last July.

In terms of pure rage
That game got to me more than any other game since the 2001 ALCS

uhhhh
Why are Maxime Talbot and Dean McAmmond fighting?

I feel like I've never seen either of them fight...MAYBE Talbot.

classless
damn - I hope that guy is okay

by peterpeter on Apr 15, 2007 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Talbot got his pathetic little ass kicked.
Armstrong's next.

Enjoy the playoffs, Penguins. You've only got another two and half games left.

McAmmond looked like he was going to just take it
...but then he freaking rocked that guy.

by peterpeter on Apr 15, 2007 4:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I hope so.
I have an undying hatred for most of the Penguins, but Armstrong definitely tops the list....he always makes the dirty play, but he never gets hit back.

by PShwa on Apr 15, 2007 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm confused
I can't decide which team I should hate more, Ottawa or Pittsburgh. I suppose that I should cheer for a 7 game series that ends in a 5 overtime game, with everyone of value injured.

by abelard on Apr 15, 2007 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Armstrong's lucky
he didn't put someone's eye out with that nose of his.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 15, 2007 4:32 PM PDT reply actions

Wow,
we're now the only team in the AL West that have scored more runs than we've allowed.
Come on! I've had better runs in my shorts!-Rip Torn, Dodgeball.
