Coaching staff update: both Ron Hassey and Dan Rohn have left the organization. Each were told that they wouldn't be coming back in 2007, and while Hassey decided to quit rather than play out the string, Rohn was apparently fired on the spot. Or something. More on this if anything comes up.

On the plus side, we got to see an awful lot of youth.

Biggest Contribution: Raul Ibanez, +2.8%
Biggest Suckfest: Cha Baek, -33.4%
Most Important At Bat: Bloomquist single, +4.4%
Most Important Pitch: Hattig double, -12.3%
Total Contribution by Pitcher(s): -40.0%
Total Contribution by Position Players: -10.0%

(What is this?)

Four-game set in Kansas City coming up, where I guess we get to try and spoil their run at a 63-win season, or something. FA bust from 2005 against an FA bust from 2004, 5:10pm PDT tomorrow evening.

Why, Mariners, why?!
I can't believe they'd decide to turf Dan Rohn like that.  He must have did or said something between last Spring and now.

Hassey I can believe.  The Mariners stationary bullpen dummy was more useful.

by Gomez on Sep 13, 2006 7:06 PM PDT reply actions

Perfect example
of why the Mariners will spend more time in the cellar than Irish potatoes.

I believe that Rohn was axed because his name came up too frequently in discussions of who would replace Hargrove. With him out of the organization, it will be easier for the FO to hire someone from outside the organization (since there is nobody left within the organization to consider). Hargrove, of course, is thrilled to be rid of the guy who was breathing down his neck and causing him discomfort all year long. Getting rid of Rohn like this may have been appeasement to Hargrove for dumping Hassey.

Hassey was probably let go to clear the way for the next guy to bring in his own bench coach. My guess is that both Hargrove and Hassey were told today that they should feel free to make vacation plans for next spring. Hargrove will ride out the season, but Hassey said forget it -- he'll start his vacation (and job search) early. This way he can be in position to interview for any managing positions that come up at the end of the season (and there will likely be plenty).

Jeff, I hear what you are saying and I am 99% in agreement, but there is still that nagging 1% in the back of my mind that wants to read the Rohn firing as a show of power by Hargrove. My mind says that Hargrove is gone immediately after the last game of the season and the FO has decided not to stick with any of the in-house possibilities. My heart is scared, and my stomach just wants to throw up!

by kva15 on Sep 13, 2006 7:44 PM PDT reply actions

Hargrove has no leverage.
He can't make a "show of power" if he doesn't have any pull.

He's gone after the year. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. I will personally mail a $5 bill to everyone who's ever read this website if Hargrove is still around in December.

I was at some gas station in the columbia gorge
camping and got a 12-pack of rainer beer for $4.24.  Now thats a steal.  It was one of those places thats really small and doesn't have prices on anything.  I think we got charged for a six pack instead.  My friend and I thought about going back in and buying their whole stock of it if we could get it at that price.  Best price I think I'll ever get for a 12 pack of something that won't make me puke all night long.

Disclaimer:  Rainer is not very good beer.  I know this.  It is a good cheap beer though.

Bavasi is such a bastard
"They're both tough for different reasons," Bavasi added. "Rohn had been here and really had done a good job. And Mike and Ron are real close. They were both tough."

by batura on Sep 13, 2006 8:09 PM PDT reply actions

......so I'm confused
How does those statements make Bavasi a bastard?
Fire Mike Hargrove!

by Goose on Sep 13, 2006 8:25 PM PDT up reply actions

twofaced answer to straight question

Two reasons I think Bavasi is a bastard over this:

One, asked the question about elimiating inside competition over Grover's job, he said something along the lines of `not getting the question`.

Then, asked about Rohn, he says what I posted, about doing a great job etc.  At my work, people don't get fired for doing a great job.

by batura on Sep 14, 2006 11:18 AM PDT up reply actions

But I'd also be willing to bet...
...that at your work, a week after someone gets fired, the public face of the company doesn't publicly badmouth the fire-ee.

There's no need for Bavasi to come out and say "Yeah, Rohn was a waste of space and he really didn't add much, so we canned his lazy ass, which will save us money on post-game buffet costs alone" - Bavasi's job is at least part PR, so of course he's gonna spout platitudes about guys, even if they are fired for good reason.  That's just kinda the way it works.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Sep 14, 2006 11:25 AM PDT up reply actions

So I forgot
why did we like Dan Rohn so much?  Aren't there a bunch of guys just like Rohn who were good minor league coaches all over the place that we could pick up.

I know Hargrove is an idiot but the fact is that a manager isn't that important.  You really need to be exceptionally bad (like Hargrove) to have much influence over the game.  Even this year, with a different manager, there is no way that we are in the playoffs.  I just want a manager who is mediocre and that shouldn't be too hard to find.

by Edgar for Pres on Sep 13, 2006 8:59 PM PDT reply actions

About Dan Rohn...
Look at the talent he's had to manage, and look where he's taken that talent.  With the Tacoma-Seattle shuttle operating at a firehose's velocity, Rohn likely had to wait until 6:59 (before a 7:05 game) to post the day's lineup last year.  Yet with all that roster churnage (and Seattle pilfering the best talent), he took the R's to the PCL championship.

He's certainly got his issues, but the players know who's in charge, and know that he's got their backs.  He knows how to get the absolute most out of his players, and the players respond very well.  He would've instantly become a fan favorite in Seattle.

I'm bummed, but, alas.  Dan Rohn is finally free.

Free George Sherrill. And Dan Rohn.

by PositivePaul on Sep 13, 2006 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the reason we liked Rohn was
A.He wasn't Mike Hargrove

and B.He has worked with the kids like Felix and Lopez and Betancourt before and they all liked him. So it was thought that having him continue managing them would be a good idea.

Rohn was not the end all be all of manangers, in fact I would rather of had Giardi if there was an option between the two, but he was a nice option to consider.

But that option is gone now.

Is there any way we can get
Earl Weaver to come out of retirement and manage the M's? Just look at this quote:
"Team speed, for Christ's Sake, you get fuckin' goddamn little fleas on the fuckin' bases getting picked off trying to steal, getting thrown out, taking runs away from you. You get them big cocksuckers who can hit the fuckin' ball out of the ballpark and you can't make any goddamn mistakes."

See any room for Bloomquist in that philsophy?

I remember growing up...
playing an old PC game called Earl Weaver Baseball. It's still one of the coolest games ever because not only could you create your own players, you could build your own stadiums!! The Mariners were playing outdoor baseball long before Safeco Field was even a thought in my virtual world. They also won several World Series, although the gameplay wasn't a cakewalk like it was in most games of that era. It also had "manage only" options.

Hell yeah- I played that game all the time!

Actually, I learned a lot from that game cuz you could play all-stars from different eras against each other.  Knew about guys like Nap Lajoie and Tris Speaker and how they hit against Bob Gibson.
