69-76
Coaching staff update: both Ron Hassey and Dan Rohn have left the organization. Each were told that they wouldn't be coming back in 2007, and while Hassey decided to quit rather than play out the string, Rohn was apparently fired on the spot. Or something. More on this if anything comes up.
On the plus side, we got to see an awful lot of youth.
Biggest Contribution: Raul Ibanez, +2.8%
Biggest Suckfest: Cha Baek, -33.4%
Most Important At Bat: Bloomquist single, +4.4%
Most Important Pitch: Hattig double, -12.3%
Total Contribution by Pitcher(s): -40.0%
Total Contribution by Position Players: -10.0%
Four-game set in Kansas City coming up, where I guess we get to try and spoil their run at a 63-win season, or something. FA bust from 2005 against an FA bust from 2004, 5:10pm PDT tomorrow evening.

these moves have nothing to do
lets say for some odd reason they bring him back. It wont be because of these moves.
Grover (IMO) is gone.
Why, Mariners, why?!
Hassey I can believe. The Mariners stationary bullpen dummy was more useful.
Perfect example
I believe that Rohn was axed because his name came up too frequently in discussions of who would replace Hargrove. With him out of the organization, it will be easier for the FO to hire someone from outside the organization (since there is nobody left within the organization to consider). Hargrove, of course, is thrilled to be rid of the guy who was breathing down his neck and causing him discomfort all year long. Getting rid of Rohn like this may have been appeasement to Hargrove for dumping Hassey.
Hassey was probably let go to clear the way for the next guy to bring in his own bench coach. My guess is that both Hargrove and Hassey were told today that they should feel free to make vacation plans for next spring. Hargrove will ride out the season, but Hassey said forget it -- he'll start his vacation (and job search) early. This way he can be in position to interview for any managing positions that come up at the end of the season (and there will likely be plenty).
Jeff, I hear what you are saying and I am 99% in agreement, but there is still that nagging 1% in the back of my mind that wants to read the Rohn firing as a show of power by Hargrove. My mind says that Hargrove is gone immediately after the last game of the season and the FO has decided not to stick with any of the in-house possibilities. My heart is scared, and my stomach just wants to throw up!
Hargrove has no leverage.
He's gone after the year. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. I will personally mail a $5 bill to everyone who's ever read this website if Hargrove is still around in December.

Bavasi is such a bastard
twofaced answer to straight question
Two reasons I think Bavasi is a bastard over this:
One, asked the question about elimiating inside competition over Grover's job, he said something along the lines of `not getting the question`.
Then, asked about Rohn, he says what I posted, about doing a great job etc. At my work, people don't get fired for doing a great job.
But I'd also be willing to bet...
There's no need for Bavasi to come out and say "Yeah, Rohn was a waste of space and he really didn't add much, so we canned his lazy ass, which will save us money on post-game buffet costs alone" - Bavasi's job is at least part PR, so of course he's gonna spout platitudes about guys, even if they are fired for good reason. That's just kinda the way it works.
So I forgot
I know Hargrove is an idiot but the fact is that a manager isn't that important. You really need to be exceptionally bad (like Hargrove) to have much influence over the game. Even this year, with a different manager, there is no way that we are in the playoffs. I just want a manager who is mediocre and that shouldn't be too hard to find.
About Dan Rohn...
He's certainly got his issues, but the players know who's in charge, and know that he's got their backs. He knows how to get the absolute most out of his players, and the players respond very well. He would've instantly become a fan favorite in Seattle.
I'm bummed, but, alas. Dan Rohn is finally free.

I think the reason we liked Rohn was
and B.He has worked with the kids like Felix and Lopez and Betancourt before and they all liked him. So it was thought that having him continue managing them would be a good idea.
Rohn was not the end all be all of manangers, in fact I would rather of had Giardi if there was an option between the two, but he was a nice option to consider.
But that option is gone now.
I think I feel similar Goose

By the way
Is there any way we can get
"Team speed, for Christ's Sake, you get fuckin' goddamn little fleas on the fuckin' bases getting picked off trying to steal, getting thrown out, taking runs away from you. You get them big cocksuckers who can hit the fuckin' ball out of the ballpark and you can't make any goddamn mistakes."
See any room for Bloomquist in that philsophy?

Earl Weaver baseball!!!!!!!!!
Actually, I learned a lot from that game cuz you could play all-stars from different eras against each other. Knew about guys like Nap Lajoie and Tris Speaker and how they hit against Bob Gibson.
